Kitties are easier to take care of (generally, they'll ignore you, as long as they have a litterbox with litter in it and full food bowls). Puppies is more loyal (my cat is looking at me skeptically, and sharpening its claws. Should I run?).
I can't have a puppy, though. My father is allergic to dogs, and we're fairly close, so I want to make sure that when I have a place of my own, my folks can come visit.

Yes. You should run far and fast.
If you want easy to take care of, why bother with a pet? I mean, sure, my cats are affectionate when they want to be (usually around 3 or 4 AM), but my puppy used to be up for play whenever, or content just to lay on the couch and watch the game with me

the cat-kick pic was great!
I've always been a cat girl, I find the paws on dogs to be too hard to be comfortable, and they drool like crazy. they may be more 'friendly' when it comes to personality, but physically it's just really freaking hard to get close and comfy and cuddly with them without accepting something nasty or massively uncomfortable no matter the circumstances. that and the size... any decent dog is far too big to keep on your lap. (mostly cause I don't consider the dogs you can carry in your purse to be anything more than little psycho yappy type dogs that you have to be Paris Hilton to carry around)
kitties, the little tiny ones especially, are just sooooo soft and like to sleep on your belly although the bigger ones have to shred it to a bloody pulp before they lay down (that's why you get a pillow and then switch it out when they're sleeping, muahaha).
that, and you don't have to take them outside 3 times a day so you can watch them poo and then pick it up. a dust mask and a scoop is all you need for a kitty - and if they're outdoor compatible you don't even need that all that often.
they both have bad breath though...

I did! Well, first there was two black cats and my favorite siamese. Then eventually the two blacks died. We got another black cat, and an orange one. Those too eventually died too. My Siamese died when I was 22, she was 21, it was heartbreaking.

Pff, my sister's cat always managed to get under my sheet (one layer below the nice, warm comforter) and sleep on my feet. Keep in mind that he would do this when I was already asleep, knowing that I wouldn't let him in when I was awake.
One morning, I woke up and the asshat was sleeping on my feet in a very uncomfortable position, so I nudged him. He didn't budge, so I shook my feet, and he got mad and (lightly) bit my right big toe.
Though usually, his company was welcome, as he acted as a foot warmer when the quilt combination stopped working.

You have the option of getting a kitten, and you're actually considering getting a puppy instead? Heathen.
Of course, the best option is to get a grown kitten (aka "cat"), preferably from an animal shelter or similar organization, but that option isn't on the poll. :(

My cat was a kitten from a shelter ... loved that man before he died in the last year
Puppies, I think, are cuter than kittens.
And puppies (which grow into dogs) are cheaper than a glock, and in my experience, are just as effective for home defence.

The dog's haven't been trained properly, and are very restless as they presumably pent up in a house all day. The owner's have no control over their dog at all.
It's sad when you have to make yourself look big and stare down a dog because it's harrassing a mother and child, and the owner is too inept to do anything to help.

They're both pretty awesome. Cats are easier, but dogs are better companions. Luckily, I've never had to choose, as I've always had at least one of each. At one time, I had two dogs and four cats. A few years later, I had three dogs and two cats (due to a move and a sort of exchanging of animals with relatives). I've loved all my cats, but I wouldn't trade my dog for any or all of them. And I've had some pretty awesome cats.
Right now, I have a seven year old Siberian Husky (and two cats). Black and white, with one blue eye and one brown. I don't have any pictures otherwise I'd post one. I couldn't find one online that was as pretty and had the eyes.
Malamutes are pretty, but I think huskies have the edge. But then, maybe I'm biased. :)

Too common isn't an insult unless you consider a companion to be a fashion statement. They're common because they're the best. Smart, affectionate, relatively free from breed-specific diseases, and hardly nuts at all.
That said I still prefer cats to dogs, and I never want to go through housebreaking a puppy again.

I very much like both cats and dogs, and have had both as pets, but there's no question as to which one wins for me - that's dogs, hands (or paws) down. Cats are nice, but they never really love you the way a dog does, and I really can't think of anything cuter than puppies.
Of course, I'm not a huge fan of dogs with pedigrees and all that nonsense. Mutts are, on average, smarter, healthier, and cuter (though that last part is admittedly just my opinion).
However, I can offer at least one example of the immense wonderfulness of mutts - my extraordinarily sweet-natured, absurdly goofy, utterly adorable doggie, whom I'll take any excuse to show off. :)

i voted for kittens, but i was sorely tempted to vote for pie. i could totally demolish a shortcrust steak and kidney pie right now, or maybe chicken and mushroom, or pepper steak, or even a good old melton mowbray pork pie, or my mum's bacon and egg pie, that is amazing. damn i love pies.

lol, i think this should have won the thread there and then.
dogs make me die, so for me it's only cats. and even cats now seem to make me allergic when i go back home to my mum's. but if i go anywhere near a dog, or even spend time in a dog's home, my throat just closes up and my face swells like crazy. cat's just make me get sniffly.

Both; make it a double entrée.
I'm sorry. Really, I am. But that joke had to be made. The longer this thread gets, the higher the probability of it appearing. I just saved you undue pain by getting it over with relatively early.
Both, I agree.
Though kitties seem to like me more, and sometimes for no good reason at all :p :)

Cats for me, dogs are ok but I'm definitely more of a cat person.
I like the way a cat is independant and will do its own thing, also if a dogs stays around it's because it feels it needs to, if a cat does it's because it wants to. You'll be hard-pressed to tell a cat what to do.
We have a cat called Max, he was a rescued cat who was hit by a car and had a broken leg, he has since made a full recovery though except he's more than a little bit mad (I wonder if being hit by a car had anything to do with that), apart from his occasional psychotic episodes he's normally very lazy but in turn very gentle, he does however have a habit of leavig his claws out though which can be painful but as he's not very bright I wonder if he actually knows how to retract his claws or not....

How can anyone ever believe that puppies (http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2007/03/this_song_makes.html)are cuter than kitties (http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2007/03/someone_alert_j.html)?
