Passover

sucks.

I can't have bread or any such products, but if it's made from matzah' then it's fine. I have to sit and watch my dad be a slob and eat old Eastern European "Jewish" garbage. Sit through the silly seder with all it's nonsens about the Jews building pyramids, which never happened. My sis is a bitch all night and there's no cereal in the morning because every time they have a good one, they stop making it the next year. How can there not be a market. So, anyone know how to make passover cereal?

On the bright side, the matzah is sweet for some reason. :)

*awaits people to tell me to tough it out*

AT least there's only one more time after this and then I turn 18 and can leave. :)

More or less. When you live with a psycho dad, frustrated mom, and crazy sister, you always want out. I'm counting down the days: 17 months from Friday I think...

Passover's great.

Who doesn't like betting on which first-timer's going to eat the horseradish? They're called "bitter herbs" for a reason, but that never seems to stop some kid from taking a bite. :p Ah, the screams.

Exactly. Ramadan can be quite uncomfortable when it falls in the summer, I've heard. No food or drink from sunup to sundown in July can be understandbly difficult. At least Passover comes with delicious Charoset. :)

We have had a few that tried to pull wierd work hours with us without telling us they were muslem (so they went without food all day and schedules lined up so they could not eat till like midnight)

We are MORE then happy to work around your schedule and give you a lunch break even if you are only working for a few hours (student shifts can be as short as an hour)

But we have to know :)

Yeah, they go ape after sundown, but those 16 hours of light in the summer suck if you're doing any kind of strenuous work.. say, if you're a laborer or a cab driver in the heat with no drink.

My source is German family coming from an Arab/Turk neighborhood in the East(I believe). I guess the Arabs throw a pretty respectable party after dark to break the fast. I've seen the same here in California, but my sample size is a bit smaller.

Edit: I've heard the same from Coptic Christians coming from Egypt. There's a good many where I live.

your sample size is a bit smaller?

Meaning, I personally know only a few Muslim families and one formerly-Muslim. My German relatives knew many more back in the Old Country, so when they tell me that there are often festivities to break the fast, they say so with more experience. My Coptic acquaintances say the same of Egypt, and are probably more qualified than I am to say so.

and passover is what...a time to celebrate and get closer to Atkins?

As for passover, I said screw it this year. And let me tell you, knowing that I shouldn't be eating bread products right now is making these oreos sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better.

hey, lets see you try to keep kosher when you're cooking for 3 gentiles and they all want their potatos and bread and pasta.

My church held one, but it was optional. And I thought Christians don't fast. Lasted from November to December.

Basically we had to give up internet, video games, TV, and everything considered a "distraction" from prayer, and all party food and apparently food that tastes good as well.

Um... That's a bit too much for a fun-loving person like me...

so what the hell's the problem? for one week you don't eat levin bread. like keeping kosher for one week is gonna kill anybody?

i think it's cool to every once in a while take a break from one's usual dietary habbits. the bod need diversity anyway.

so for one week you eat a little different then you do for the rest of the year.
catholics have lent. moslems and baha'is have a whole 19 days they don't eat while the sun is up.

i'm sure a lot of other lesser known faiths have some sort of time of year for ritual purification by eating/not eating certain foods that the rest of the year they otherwise would.

i think it's good to have this kind of reminder that there's other things going on in our world then just what we would otherwise experience in our daily lives.

matzos are cool. i like em any time of year. i put peanut butter and jelly on them. i have no idea if that would be cool during passach. i wasn't raised kosher. my dad was an agnostic who had been raised more or less episcopalian.

and me, i don't practice anything, although there's still a card in my pocket that says i once upon a time declaired as a baha'i.

even though it's been ages since i actualy kept the fast. but i am going over to my mom's to light the candles and maybe read some of the writings that go with passover for her.

it is what she grew up with. even if she was never actualy into more then observing the holydays as they went by. but it cheers her up when i come by and all that.

mostly harmless enough as far as i can see.

what's kosher good for?

the environment.

and lowering cholesteral.

but aside from whatever physiological bennifits there may or may not be to any of these ritual temporary aboritions in diet, the symbolic trip of making us think beyond ourselves, at least a little bit is still the main thing it's all about. any and all of them.

it wouldn't hurt anybody to eat veg one or two weeks a year who didn't otherwise either.

If I continue to have to deal with family holidays throughout the year that occasionally involve getting splattered with colored dye, you can deal with not eating real bread for a week.
