Toppings on fries?

Dakini

I was enjoying some fries with a side of ketchup, yellow mustard and mayonaise and I got to thinking about how some people make icky faces at mayonaise on fries... but it's really quite delicious.

What are your favourite french fry (or chip... for those of you accross the Atlantic) toppings?

Shit. I meant to make it an multiple option poll.

Edit: discovered it while vacationing in France at a MacDonald's somewhere between Paris and Brussels. Found it tasty.

When I worked at this Mexican restaurant chain (owned by an Italian family from New Orleans--odd, I know). we used to make junk fries. Spicy fries with ground beef, queso, sour cream, and green onions thrown on top of them. Damn, I want some right now.

and top it with "ground beef" that tastes like some strange kind of rubber-like substance
tomatoes, sour cream and processed industrial grade "Nacho/Melted Cheese"

Salt and Vinegar is the natural order of things, if gravy and cheese curds cannot apply.

Mayo's alright, but not my thing.

Ketchup is far too Plebian.

My fries will have either:

A. Ketchup. JUST ketchup.
B. BBQ sauce. JUST BBQ sauce.
C. Chilli/Chilli and a little bit of cheese. JUST the chilli and cheese
D. Gravy. JUST gravy

All of these are good with fries, but none of them can be mixed because that's just really gross.

Kind of like the pitiful number of decent Indian restaurants in Philadelphia. Cafe Spice, overpriced and low quality, Sitar, low quality, New Dehli, decent at best, though the round-the-clock buffet helps.

But if I must add "toppings", a bit of everything on hand (and I mean everything, as in vinegar, tomato sauce, chopped onions, peanuts, chopped chili peppers, cheese and hot sauce) never fails to impress.

I'm a sugar fiend, and the mango chutney in our kebab houses probably contains very little mango. It's this super-sweet, highly fluid, luminous orange liquid that seeps through the cheesy mass and super donner meat to enrich everything with its radioactive goodness. I have, on occasion, bought it as a drink instead of a coke or lassi.

@GnI - I discovered my version myself, much to the confusion of the Mancunian kebab shop bloke. Took me a full 3 minutes of drunkenly slurring it to him before the penny dropped, although that was probably the fault of the slurring :p

Super-sweet, highly fluid, luminous orange liquid? That IS mango chutney, regardless of the actual mango content. I've found that there are many people who claim to have unparalleled sweet teeth until they come across Indian desserts.

I once offered a cup of sambar to a friend of mine as a drink (it was packaged in a styrofoam cup, the local South Indian place being a bunch of cheapasses.) and watched the fun as he took a swill and spent the next minute and a half bent under the faucet.

I live just next to a section of Manchester called the Curry Mile, a fairly obvious description of the road's many restaurants. There's a shop along there which sells desserts and the like and, quite frankly, some of them just scare me by sight alone. Awesome as they might be, I'm afraid of developing type II diabetes if I stare directly at them

Chips and curry sauce is fairly ubiquitous throughout England, although real people (i.e. Northerners) have gravy on their chips. Apparently this wonderful phenomenon doesn't venture further south than the Midlands, which may explain why the North is betterer :p

Chip shop curry sauce is probably closer to Chinese chicken curry sauce than any Indian style dish I can think of. Saying that, I'm told that most English style curries are really heavily westernised. To answer a question that was neither asked of me or necessarily asked at all.

In the extraordinarily rare occasion that I eat fries (I don't do fast food, and I don't fry when I cook), I generally prefer ketchup, but any sauce that might be with the meal will usually do. Cheese fries are awesome. Honey mustard? Hell yes. Got some fries with your barbecue? Slather it on.

Maybe my palette is just too Americanized, but the only time I would have mayo on fries is if I were having them with a burger or sandwich, and some mayo dripped off onto the fries. It isn't disgusting, but not really to my taste. Tomato-based sauces work best for me.

The one thing that must always be had with chips though, is salt. Without salt chips suck to high hell.

chips:

on the former i'll have just ketchup, on the latter ketchup and vinegar. and salt on both, of course.

The one thing that must always be had with chips though, is salt. Without salt chips suck to high hell.

This is True.

Ideally with vinegar, too, but there are loads of good things to have on chips. Salt and Vinegar is king, though.

Cocktail (I make a good approximation of it by mixing mayonnaise, spicy ketchup, tabasco and worchestershire).

Or a mix of mayonnaise and mustard, possibily with horseradish.

Tomato sauce with minced garlic and chili peppers.

Garlic sauce.

Bearnaise.

I forgot! Zaziki!

Salt and Vinegar is the natural order of things, if gravy and cheese curds cannot apply.

Mayo's alright, but not my thing.

Ketchup is far too Plebian.

Vinegar? Yuck! I will stick with Ketchup or chili cheese.

Why not? Eating is pleasure, after all.

Mostly:
Cocktail for occasions like New Year's Eve.
Mayo+mustard in autumn.
Garlic sauce or zaziki in summer.
Tomato sauce in springtime.
Bearnaise in winter.

The ketchup/mayo combo when eating greasy spoon fries.

When I eat belgian fries, I like different things at different times. Mayonnaise with provencal herbs is good in the summer, but then again so is lime juice. Once I had them with a mexican tomato sauce that felt like it was burning my palate off...very addictive. I tend to shy away from the vinegary condiments, like relish.

Poutine, however, is disgusting.

Weird. The only two times I hear people talking about cheese AND gravy on chips and it's on two consecutive days. Is it a French Canadian thing?

Salt and Vinegar. Inseparable.

And mushy peas. Maybe even with mint sauce. Mayonnaise is really good, but it doesn't go too well with mushy peas, and peas win.

mustard likewise.

When I worked at this Mexican restaurant chain (owned by an Italian family from New Orleans--odd, I know). we used to make junk fries. Spicy fries with ground beef, queso, sour cream, and green onions thrown on top of them. Damn, I want some right now.

That sounds really good. Sounds like nachos with fries instead.

I like ketchup on fries usually. I also like brown gravy or mozzarella-or both.

I dont eat fries very often, but enjoy them when I do with any of the above.

Although in Britain, one of our traditional dish's is a Curry so we have more Indian restaurants than McDonalds. Maybe that’s why we are not fat like our colonial children across the pond.

That would be my choice either. Of course, I assume salt is added by default.

If you absolutely must add something, add... a hamburger? Yes, fries are best eaten with a hamburger (as in meat, no revolting toppings there either).

I love mayo on my fries. I know it adds 5 million calories to them, but what the hell. I eat fries maybe six times a year. They are too greasy for me.

Gravy is also yummy, so even though I've never tried it I'm positive I would love Poutine. Probably a good thing I live so very far away from it...

Oh, and I'm surprised at the number of Americans who go for vinegar. I thought that was an exclusively British tastebud blight.

Poutine...a heart attack in a meal. Yum.

As for vinegar in the U.S., I think it's mainly an east coast/ New England thing. You don't find many people (on the west coast at least) who do like it. You do get weird looks from waitstaff when you ask for a bottle of malted when they bring you your fries.

Ranch dressing. There, I said it. Ranch dressing on fries. And really, on lots of things. Except house salads.

Chili and cheese is also good. As long as it's good chili and decent cheese.

Salt and vinegar is all right if you're in the mood for it.

I'd like to invent a time machine and go back and pre-emptively murder whoever invented ketchup. That or just erase their brain and convince them to invent jet packs.

Ha, liek I need to be jealous of compressed, liquefied, tomato-based gloppy sawdust that appears on every restaurant table in the country. Anyone can claim to like ketchup. It's more sophisticated to enjoy a different condiment, like, say, bacon.

On the occasions when I find myself dining on fast food fries, I find that the "side salad" makes an excellent topping. Particularly with the ranch, IMO, but other dressings work to blend together lettuce and deep-fried potato.
