2. Star Wars (pictured)
3. Blade Runner
4. Planet of the Apes
5. The Matrix
6. Alien
7. Forbidden Planet
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey
9. The Terminator
10. Back to the Future

Hmmm... As George Lucas fucked up Star Wars with the new trilogy, the glory of the original one has diminished somewhat... And Firefly and Serenity was fantastic...

But still, I have to say that Star Wars remains, in my mind, the greatest Sci Fi movie ever, with Serenity being a strong runner up.

I'm happy because I love them both :)

I'm missing Aliens on the list, and Planet of the Apes can go take in an off-Broadway show.

Really? I was having the opposite problem, that sci fi was to reliant on the nod and the wink, the action movie one liner joke cracking that went right before each overblown special effects sequence. In that respect Firefly/Serenity fits in just fine. It's why I can't watch Stargate.

Which is not to say that I don't like a little humor or sci fi that doesn't take itself too seriously, my favorite author is Stanislaw Lem in that respect, but it seems the Star Trek formula of 'cowboys in outerspace' seems to be what I run into more often than not, and part of why I LOVE Battlestar Galactica.

What Star Wars did, and then probably over did, was put effects in every frame so that it wasn't so much special as it was the world that the characters lived in.

The only one's I have seen out of them are Star Wars, Terminator, Matrix, Planet of the Apes and Back to the Future. I recon the first three are on there own plane of existence for there pure brilliance. But the matrix is just slightly better than the others because it actually makes you think, whereas the others are just about spaceships, guns and explosions. :)

I’m still waiting for a film of Farscape, one the best Sc-Fi's ever.

Serenity/Firefly works if you are not expecting it to be Star Wars. If you like good scripting, good acting and a nicely directed and produced product, you might like Firefly. If you can watch a series, and get a smile on your face because the 'surprise' in the last episode has had a number of clues throughout the season, you might like Firefly. If you liked "Red Dwarf", you might like Firefly.

It's a clever product. It looks great (sometimes it looks terrible, but it's supposed to... like realism added by camera-shake on an entirely CGI shot). If it has a failing, I'm inclined to believe it is, a lot of Americans didn't like the idea we might be partners with China in our future.

I'm still thinking that Star Wars isn't sci-fi. It is space opera.

And yes, Lucas fucked up totally with the new trilogy. It is soooo sucky and its characters are totally two-dimensional ("Hey Anakin, join me and become an evil Sith!" "Why, Mr.Palpatine?" "Because you will be more powerful!" "Oh, ok! I'll be starting with killing kids, is that evil enough?"). Plus, it's got an even more stupid replacement for the Ewoks (one solution: extermination!).

I'm somewhat surprised that Hitch-Hiker's wasn't ranked.

The poll is unfair because there is no movie with the title of "Star Wars". There are movies titled "The Phantom Menace", "Attack of the Clones", "Revenge of the Sith", "A New Hope", "The Empire Strikes Back", and "Return of the Jedi", but no movie goes by the name of "Star Wars". Thus, all votes cast for "Star Wars" are votes for a movie that does not exist.

The poll is also distorted by a lack of James Cameron movies. If Terminator 2 had been on the list, it would have pwned all of the others.

Wrong! As any true Star Wars fan would know, A New Hope was originally released under the title "Star Wars". 'Episode IV: A New Hope' was added after the release of The Empire Strikes Back.

As far as I can work out, all the movies on the list are either stand-alones, or the first made in series. Hence no Aliens or Terminator 2. Alien was far scarier than any of the sequels anyway. Suspense > Gross out.

1. This cant be such a great movie...Ive never heard of it.

2. You cant compare a film like "A New Hope", or "Empire Strikes Back" to this film, becuase this film hasnt done anything that hasnt been done before.

"ANH" did.

In some cases they invented technologies that are still used today, and filming techniques. "Serenity" has not...and will not.

They missed a lot of good movies on that list, to be honest. Star Wars did not have spectacular writing, but it did have groundbreaking special effects. The Empire Strikes Back was good because Lucas left the script and direction to other people. Besides, the series is an homage to the old Flash Gordon-style serials anyway.

Of the ones on the list, I would have to put 2001 on top because of all of the factors listed: good script, good acting and, for the time, good special effects. Serenity was good, but 2001 was better.

Too bad...it was a lame sequel to a good movie, that made the same mistake Return of the Jedi did. It catered to the "cute".
We see Arnie, reprising his role as a Terminator, only to watch Little Eddie Furlong order him not to kill anything.

The only likable character was Hamilton, and even she couldnt carry this film alone. Aside from the special effects (the liqui-borg) not much to see here folks.

Are we talking about Ripley from Alien 4, or just 1&2?
If so...Connor kicks her pilot ass.

If were talkin 4...Ripley eats Connor....literally.

all but four she would kick Ripley's ass

It doesn't surprise me that Serenity won. Plenty of teenage girls probably got a kick out of Buffy in space.

You know, it was mostly teenage boys that watched Buffy, for obvious reasons... ;)

Coupla things...

This is like comparing Oasis to the Beatles.
That is to say....there is no comparison.

Now that I have heard of it, I'll go watch it and see if its any good.

Watch the series Firefly first - the movie will make more sense if you do so. It's only 13 episodes (I think).

Having bought and watched Serenity recently I thought it was pretty average really, so this poll result mystifies me.

Have you seen Firefly yet? If not then I highly suggest you buy or rent the series, and watch it. Then go back and watch Serenity. Your experience will be much more enjoyable.

Not yet as it hasn't been on British TV - if I see the series I will get it.

The complete series got released on DVD not long ago. It's how I got into it.

Alien was far scarier than any of the sequels anyway. Suspense > Gross out.

QFT.

Not true. Though the obvious reasons may have been there (I wasn't a teenager when it was on, but Willow and Faith? *drool* ), it's strongest demographic was females under 25.
