I managed it in 9 minutes 43 seconds - bloody Iowa (apologies to any Iowans): took me 2 minutes to think of it.

Got 25. But I also live in other side of world. Massachusetts is horrible name I knew it but couldnt figure out correct spelling.

As for the USA, I'm not even going to try. Some of those states are horrible to spell, even for the natives.

It's simple really: For the US of Mexico, the unique qualifying part of its name is that its a Mexico. That part of the world has been Mexico since the Aztecs. So I call it Mexico. For the US of America, the unique part is the US. The Americas are very big, and most of that territory is not in the US of America. So I call it the US. Luckily we've already worked out that the USM is not referred to as US, so the name is free.

The article for the book says that the town name was inspired by the book, so I'd guess the answer is yes.

The book itself is based (to start with at least) in a town in North Devon, near Bideford - which is the location of Westward Ho!, the town. So that's probably why the town has that name.

The UN, I missed 64 of 192. Most of them tiny places, but I'm embarrassed that I dropped Portugal, Austria and Ukraine, among others. I swear I typed in "Dominican Republic", and it's picking nits to not give me "Bosnia-Herzegovina" even if the "official" name uses an "and" instead of a damned hyphen.

You forgot Skamokawa, pronounced "ska MOCK away" in Wahkiakum county. Why is "gooey duck" spelled "geoduck"? There's the Skookumchuck River (actually two of them), Hoquiam, Issaquah, Mukilteo, Kalaloch "Klay lock", and Stehekin.

BTW, I got the states in 3:06. I was still typing countries at ten minutes - got exactly half - but spent way too much time trying to get congo and zaire in when they've changed their names to "The Republic of Congo" and "The Democratic Republic of the Congo". I couldn't figure out how to spell "Guyana". I didn't even get to the middle east besides the Arabian peninsula, and I only skirted eastern Europe (Belarus got me on the spelling) I didn't even try going through the south pacific. I didn't spend nearly enough time on west Africa.

I was still typing countries at ten minutes - got exactly half - but spent way too much time trying to get congo and zaire in when they've changed their names to "The Republic of Congo" and "The Democratic Republic of the Congo". I couldn't figure out how to spell "Guyana". I didn't even get to the middle east besides the Arabian peninsula, and I only skirted eastern Europe (Belarus got me on the spelling) I didn't even try going through the south pacific. I didn't spend nearly enough time on west Africa.

Got all 50 states in about nine minutes. West Virginia, spelling 'Massachusetts' and 'Connecticut' (I hate New England >.<), and -- for some bizarre reason -- remembering the name of Missouri were what held me up. This actual thought process went through my head -- "West of the Mississippi, south of Iowa, trapezoidal...Kansas City and Independence and St. Louis...the 'Show Me State'...Cardinals just won the Series...big river...MISSOURI! Still not sure how I got 'Show Me State' before I got Missouri.

Didn't do quite so well on the country test. Missed 97. Got the Americas (minus about half those tiny island states), Europe (minus Liechtenstein and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which I couldn't spell), and half of South Asia with a fair amount of ease, but ran into trouble in Africa. I'm pretty proud of remembering Malta, Andorra, San Marino, and Palau; embarassed by forgetting Israel, Afghanistan, both Koreas, and El Salvador.
