Name the states

http://www.ironicsans.com/state22.html

You get ten minutes to name all 50 states. The timer starts as soon as the page loads. Type the names of the states into the box - you don't need to press enter, it automatically recognises them.

I managed it in 9 minutes 43 seconds - bloody Iowa (apologies to any Iowans): took me 2 minutes to think of it.

There'll be a poll to give your results (and to gloat over those you did better than).

A woman is listening to the conversation two Italians are having on a bus. This is what she hears:

"First Emma come, then I come, then two asses come at once. I come again, followed by the two asses again, then I pee pee, then finally I come once more".

Shocked, she interrupts the conversation, saying "I don't know about in Italy, but here we don't talk about that sort of thing in public!"

The Italian replies, "What are you talking about? I'm telling my friend how to spell Mississippi!"

Pssssssssssst.
Em Eye Ess Ess Eye Ess Ess Eye Pee Pee Eye.

Mississippi is named for the Mississippi river which forms its western boundary and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The name roughly translated from Native American folklore means "Father of Waters." The translation comes from the Chippewa words "mici zibi" meaning "great river" or "gathering in of all the waters" and the Algonquin word "Messipi".

Australia isn't too much smaller than the USA (9,631,420 km² vs 7,741,220 km²). Why so many subdivisions America?

Which United States? The United states of american, or los estados unidos mexicanos?? Please clarify. ;)

It's simple really: For the US of Mexico, the unique qualifying part of its name is that its a Mexico. That part of the world has been Mexico since the Aztecs. So I call it Mexico. For the US of America, the unique part is the US. The Americas are very big, and most of that territory is not in the US of America. So I call it the US. Luckily we've already worked out that the USM is not referred to as US, so the name is free.

Oh, please! Don't look for logic in place names, especially in English-speaking countries. In the US, the spellings are a result of places named in other languages getting translated or sounded out in English.

The UK isn't much better. The combination of Latin, Angle, Saxon, Jute, Norman French, Gaelic, WELSH, and more really muddles things up.

Say "Shaftsbry", type "Shaftesbury".
Say "Glouster", type "Gloucester".
Say "Edinbruh", type "Edinborough".

And don't get me started on Welsh....mostly because I've not a clue as to the rules of reading it.

EDIT: My home state, Washington, has a few doozies, too.

Say "Pyoo-AL-up", type "Puyallup"
Say "Skwim", type "Sequim"

There's French influence (Sol Duc, Vancouver), Spanish (San Juan Islands, Strait of Juan de Fuca), English (Ft. Ebey, Puget Sound), and all kinds of local tribes of First Nations (Snoqualmie, Haida, Tlingit, Kwakiutl, Tulalip, Skagit, Nisqually, Makah, Yakima, Nooksack, and many more).

The article for the book says that the town name was inspired by the book, so I'd guess the answer is yes.

The book itself is based (to start with at least) in a town in North Devon, near Bideford - which is the location of Westward Ho!, the town. So that's probably why the town has that name.

US States, all 50 in 2:28 (Oklahoma, of all places to draw a blank).

The UN, I missed 64 of 192. Most of them tiny places, but I'm embarrassed that I dropped Portugal, Austria and Ukraine, among others. I swear I typed in "Dominican Republic", and it's picking nits to not give me "Bosnia-Herzegovina" even if the "official" name uses an "and" instead of a damned hyphen.

You forgot: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Austria, Belize, Benin, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Brunei, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Comoros, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominican Republic, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Grenada, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Indonesia, Kenya, Kiribati, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mauritius, Micronesia, Namibia, Nauru, Palau, Portugal, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Tanzania, The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uruguay, Zambia.

Oh, please! Don't look for logic in place names, especially in English-speaking countries. In the US, the spellings are a result of places named in other languages getting translated or sounded out in English.

You forgot Skamokawa, pronounced "ska MOCK away" in Wahkiakum county. Why is "gooey duck" spelled "geoduck"? There's the Skookumchuck River (actually two of them), Hoquiam, Issaquah, Mukilteo, Kalaloch "Klay lock", and Stehekin.

BTW, I got the states in 3:06. I was still typing countries at ten minutes - got exactly half - but spent way too much time trying to get congo and zaire in when they've changed their names to "The Republic of Congo" and "The Democratic Republic of the Congo". I couldn't figure out how to spell "Guyana". I didn't even get to the middle east besides the Arabian peninsula, and I only skirted eastern Europe (Belarus got me on the spelling) I didn't even try going through the south pacific. I didn't spend nearly enough time on west Africa.

Hoquiam, Issaquah, Stehekin, and Skookumchuck can all be sounded out for accurate pronunciations. However, you're right about Kalaloch, Skamokawa and Mukilteo, along with Sekiu, Snoqualmie, and Ilwaco).

As far as "gooey duck" for geoduck, I'm gonna go with the old standby, transliteration in transcription of notes from explorers/namers to hte cataloguing chaps at the home office.

Got all 50 states in about nine minutes. West Virginia, spelling 'Massachusetts' and 'Connecticut' (I hate New England >.<), and -- for some bizarre reason -- remembering the name of Missouri were what held me up. This actual thought process went through my head -- "West of the Mississippi, south of Iowa, trapezoidal...Kansas City and Independence and St. Louis...the 'Show Me State'...Cardinals just won the Series...big river...MISSOURI! Still not sure how I got 'Show Me State' before I got Missouri.

Didn't do quite so well on the country test. Missed 97. Got the Americas (minus about half those tiny island states), Europe (minus Liechtenstein and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which I couldn't spell), and half of South Asia with a fair amount of ease, but ran into trouble in Africa. I'm pretty proud of remembering Malta, Andorra, San Marino, and Palau; embarassed by forgetting Israel, Afghanistan, both Koreas, and El Salvador.

You forgot:Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Barbados, Benin, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Botswana, Brunei, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia,
Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros,
Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, East Timor, Ecuador,
El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji,
Gabon, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada,
Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Israel, Ivory Coast, Jordan,
Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Laos,
Liberia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Madagascar,
Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania,
Mauritius, Moldova, Monaco, Mozambique, Myanmar,
Namibia, Nauru, North Korea, Oman, Papua New Guinea,
Paraguay, Philippines, Qatar, Republic of the Congo, Saint Kitts and Nevis,
Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal,
Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, Somalia,
South Korea, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Swaziland, Switzerland,
Tajikistan, Tanzania, The Bahamas, Togo, Tonga,
Trinidad and Tobago, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu,

Doesn't anybody else know that song, "Fifty Nifty United States"? We had to learn that damn thing in 4th grade, and I've never forgotten it.

That's the only way I can name all the states without thinking, "Did I already name that one?" And yes, that damn song was infuriating, but at least I know all 50 states in alphabetical order.

And once again, the District of Columbia gets no respect.
