I am getting really pissy with my computer. Evidently I can't use any of my browsers to connect to the internet, yet, i know there is a connection as I can play games online, and use my IMs. I ran all my spy ware crap, andit was negative. So what the hell is going on? It only been like this the last 2 or 3 days. Zilam w/o internet= :(

If you're on a college campus connection you may have been kicked off the network for excessive bandwidth use, which happened to me several times. I'd get a hold of whoever is in charge of your network and ask about it.

*Also asks the obvious question*

Yes, how did you post this?

Did you mean 'plan' or 'play'?

Im using the computers downstairs in the lab. :p

And idk if there is a bandwidth limit, and if so, i surely didn't exceed it. not for two days straight to where I can't use my browsers, but I can still play Guild Wars or Call of Duty

If you have a P2P client, which still works, grab a new browser and try that (like old school netscape). If it works, try re-downloading FF or Opera or IE7, and set it up again (uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs first). Worked for me back in the day.

Well, since it sounds like you are on a college network, the admin probably blocked access to your IP or something. It sounds exactly like what happened to me, it stopped my browsers, but not my torrents (Which were using all the bandwidth in the first place), games, and messengers. If you call whoever it is that runs the network they'll likely check to see that you aren't purposefully trying to slow down the network and let you back on. That is though, if you got kicked you off for that, it may be something else entirely though.

From my experience, college network admins are incompetent asshats.
Maybe try screwing around with network settings in the browser before calling them.

I got it working now. odd. I jsut downloaded somehting, and it ran at 125k/s so thats showing that i am connected and strong. I turned off my norton anti virus firewall(keeping my zone alarm on) and it seems to work just fine.

Lesson: don't use Norton.

Ain't that the truth. I was like 10 feet from the wireless repeater in college and my signal strength never peaked above 2 bars (out of 4).

But he is getting connectivity ... how would you go about limiting someones connection ONLY for the browser not for other applications like AIM and what would be their motivation for allowing those other resources?

I can think of one or two ways on HOW but there would be no why

(This coming from the head of one of those school networks you talk about) We usually do a Subnet shift with a DNS redirect to a "you have been naughty" page

But usually not an issue the packet shaper takes care of any issues with over usage

From my experience as a college network admin most College students are incompetent asshats. Not only do they abuse the system but they will lie through their teeth and do anything they damn well please regardless of how it affects them and the other students in the dorms.

9/10 of "network" issues are the students own fault or another students fault.

Alright multiple browser effect is the sign of something deeper

Step 1) and most likly

Start
Run
type "inetwiz"

Select lan
Next
Make sure all boxes are unchecked <- (most common problem for browser only issues is a proxy that is flaky programed in here)
next
No (to mail account)
Finish out

Now try ...

Second Troubleshooting procedure

Are you using wireless or wired? if wireless make sure not plugged in as well ... if plugged in turn off your wireless card

Browsers often get confused by having 2 types of network connections present specially if some asshat in your dorm started their own wireless point up in the area

Third troubleshooting procedure

Make sure you ARE connecting to the right wireless point not someones personal point (if using wireless)

If its not that I would still lean towards either a virus/spyware issue or wider network issues, at that point maybe contact your helpdesk/resnet area they may know of a wider issue

Lol sometimes it feels like that ... specially when they lie to you ...

I can handle doing something stupid but when you spend an hour working on a procedure that turns out to be in the complete wrong direction because a user did not want to admit something.

My first step in troubleshooting is "Did one of sisters unplug the wireless router again." 90% of the time, it is the step that fixes it.

EDIT: Now that I got them on Ubuntu, I have only had to fix their computer once. I'm pretty sure it was caused by aging hardware too.

Well agreed there are the obvious ... and of course my department is well versed in the usual suspects but in the end we have 3000 in dorm users and another 13000 other users that we support ... and their problems can be complex. One lie can completely throw a wrench into things

Even more obvious - reboot your computer - works for 9 out of 10 as well

Well, I always had to fix my sisters computers with a bunch of "I dunnos" and finally, "Stop asking me questions"

So, I started having problems again, and i was getting really angry, but then I plugged right into the wall(which previously wouldn't let me do) and it has been working PERFECTLY. So I guess I have a burnt up wireless router. :(

Yeah, what he said.

Norton ("Norton Internet Security", in particular) is just trouble, full stop.

That will probably kill your connection anyway. All those commercials products don't play well with others, especially Norton.

Adminning for idiots doesn't excuse network admins from being incompetent asshats. Our network is run by a bunch of idiots who ignore people who know what they are talking about (people with networking experience and the head of the Computer Science department network and systems) and run everything on ass backwards outdated systems.

I don't know what your CS department is like nor your admin department but our CS graduates could not hook two computers to a router to save their life

You have a lot of students and professors that have their head stuck in theory that have no concept of reality trying to tell you how to do your job best ... and usually thoes idea's are unrealistic

As for outdated equipment, if your univ is anything like ours you may want to put the blame for that where it belongs, not the admins but those that write their budget

(I am not saying they can not be incompetent at all, there are plenty of them out there) but I find that the problems are usually more complex then simple incompitance

Yeah they do that all the time too.

'This keyboad is all sticky, and you say that it worked fine yesterday, but not today, and you can assure me thatyou did not spill coke on it?'

Liar!

'You're locked out of your PC, and no matter what password you try it won't work, and you tell me that you never saw any you have 5 days to change your password messages, not a single one all week?'

Liar!

'Hello IT! have you tried re-booting it yet? You have!'

Yeah its sad and sometimes people get upset with you but in the end you almost have to assume that the information they are giving you is incorrect and that you have to start from scratch with every problem just to make sure they did not fubar and assume something

I know it feels like we are treating you like a child specially to thoes that DO know what they are doing, but when the last 3 people had fed you incorrect information over the phone you have to assume the 4th might be doing the same

We have NO way to evaluate your level of sophistication from scratch without knowing you, and to be blunt there are more users that like to THINK they know about computers then actually do, so the pompous I am a genius attitude while trying to help you is not needed and just gets in the way of actually solving your issue.
