I've never fired anything beyond a 20-gauge and a .22 rifle.

I know! I know all about weapons but I haven't even fired a pistol! I'm a sissy! BAWWWWWW!!!

Yep. Shooting's a nice hobby, in my experience. A bit expensive, compared to, say, birdwatching, but rewarding in its own way.

I've fired a .22 caliber Ruger target revolver, a .357 magnum Smith and Wesson revolver (loaded with .38), a .38 caliber Colt revolver, 2 different 9mm semi-auto pistols (Beretta 92F and Sig 228, IIRC), and my .223 caliber AR-15.

Combine the two sports. You can watch birds through your scope right before you shoot them.

Answer to OP. I have shot many many types of weapons. Range from a .22 as a kid to a 120mm smooth bore.

yes, only at paper targets though. it's been a while so i forget what my last score was. i vaguely remember that my groupings were around 4cm at 50 meters. but that may well be misremembered, it's a long time since i did any shooting. i do know that no-one ever recommended me to take it up as a serious hobby anyway.

I've never even touched a gun, let alone fired one. The closest I've come was that one time a police officer shoved me down next to him as he crouched and pointed his pistol at some nearby shooter who was firing at us. (This was back in California, when I lived in Oxnard. I'd accidentely stumbled into a shoot-out between several police officers and a small number of teens. How I managed that I still don't know, but I was lucky to escape alive. As it was I was almost shot by the police because I was wearing clothing similiar to the teens already shooting at them.)

Let's see...

.22 pistols and rifles of various kinds
9mm semi-autos once or twice
.357 S&W Model 686 (usually firing .38)
.357 Marlin 1894 Cowboy
Safari Arms .45 (a piece of junk like most .45s, IMHO)
Glock 21 (also .45, but a superb bit of kit)
Long barrel .44 Magnum
Enfield carbine c.1864 (replica, great fun)
12 gauge shotgun
7.62mm bolt action sniper rifle (can't remember what kind)

... and an amusette - basically a giant, swivel mounted musket. Scared the crap out of me when it went off.

I can barely get on the target at 10 yards ... well, sometimes I do.

Shoot at 5 yards with a pistol.

Shoot the tightest group you can (ragged hole in my case) and then when its time to check the targed, hold your head up against it.

No matter the range, if you can put your groups "inside the head" you are good-to-go.

01-04-2007, 18:28
Relatively recently. I told a friend that I had never even handled a gun and so he got one for me to hold and later we went out to an empty ranch to shot a pair of rifles and a pistol, all .22s. We shot at cans and walnuts (it was a walnut ranch). We were told to shoot at squirrels as well, but we didn't.

It was alright. I still prefer that when I fire a gun that an animatronic piano player starts playing or something squirts water.

I have only ever shot a 9mm. It was my boyfriend's, and he thought that I should know how to use a gun, and I wanted to try. I actually wasn't half bad! I would like to get my own gun, however, I live in the state of NY. Where the permit process can take up to two years. I think something has gone seriously wrong with the laws, when it would be MUCH easier for me to obtain a gun illegally, then legally.

I don't know anything about guns...so I don't know what I've fired....but I did grow up in West Virginia...in a house with a pretty significantly sized gun cabinet...and I did fire a couple of them- at a target or something, probably one of those things like a fake deer.
I also tried to shoot a bow and arrow...but I don't think I was strong enough :-(

Nope, I have no intention of ever doing so.

what about .457 magnum(four fifty-seven not a typo)? I am very curious about that round.

It is commonly called the 457 LAR, and it is a "big" game cartridge, such as for bears. There is a handgun, called the 457 LAR/GRIZZLY, which is a modified 1911 frame to shoot that monster round. There are very few semi auto handguns in that caliber.

Check the link, it will give you more info on the 457. http://www.outdoorsdirectory.com/akforum/akshooting/56264.htm

Yes I have. I thought it was fun but it's absolutelly nothing I would recommend people doing. There are other less harmful ways to have fun.

You thought it was fun, but you wouldn't recommend it? Now I'm confused. Usually if you have fun doing an activity, you would want to recommend it.

As to your comment about there being "other less harmful ways to have fun", I'll have you know that nobody/nothing (except targets) was ever harmed by me when I went shooting at the range (I did get hit in the forehead with a spent casing once, but it didn't hurt).

Dem, If you're ever in the Central Illinois area, message me. I'll provide the ammo. :)

=) Thanks.

I think my soon-to-be-mother-in-law is going to get me out there soon. She's insisting that I either get a taser or a handgun. Personally, I think I'll be more comfortable with a taser, but I'm willing to try out handling a gun.

Tazers are good. You can use it at a distance but have only one shot and you have to hit w/ both electrodes. Stun guns don't have that fault but you have to be close to use it. Handguns require some practice but you can't carry them in Illinois. Of course, for that matter, you have to have a FOID card to own a tazer or stun gun and carry laws vary here as well.

You can't carry a handgun at all in Illinois? I know people here (in GA) who have and carry guns and tazers or stun guns (I'm not entirely sure what the difference here is). I think you have to have a permit to carry either concealed, but I've been told it isn't that hard to get.

I don't really feel like I do anything that puts me at particularly high risk for needing to use a weapon, but she worries that I sometimes work late hours or drive long distances by myself.

No carry at all. Hizonner Daley is actually in violation of federal law by not permitting retired LEO's to carry in Chicago. There are some areas in Illinois that you will be arrested for even owning a handgun or having a firearm in your car.

Generally, Tazers have two electrodes that shoot out and emit an electic current on contact.

A stun gun has two connected electrodes that you press against the intended recipient.

Hells yeah! I go shooting regularly. Operating a firearm is a skill like any other. If you wish to be any good you must practice constantly.

[country]Aww, I wish I was that romantic. I always end up taking girls to back of my pickup truck. It just not as romantic as the shooting range though.

I was driving a 1977 white/rust Ford pickup at the time. It was a beaut.

(Puppet posting for Pschycotic Pschycos)

Let's see:

.22 rifle
20-gauge shotgun
smooth-bore musket
Good ole' potato cannon :D

And I'm still working on the 30" railgun in the backyard. (trash-can ammo) Once (if) I get it working, it'll be the biggest thing I've ever fired. Hell, it'll be one of the biggest things *anybody's ever fired.

During my military service (Italian Army, drafted):
Enfield
M1-Garand (standard equipement for our barracks)
FAL BM 59

after that...
well, let's say the biggest thing i ever fired was a muzzle loaded 12lb cannon, but it was only blank shot.

Nope. The first time I fired a firearm, was at the NRA basic pistol course I took last year. It cost me $110 to take the course, but in order to get a pistol permit in CT, it's a requirement.
