I think my first experience with a sufferer of Oppressed Evangelical Syndrome came last year when I was seeing a two-man show of "Dr. Faustus" in Virginia.

After the show, the director came out for a Q&A and said that he had changed Faustus' supernatural powers to purely scientific madcappery (overly complex machines that serve no purpose whatsoever, etc) to display the "arrogance of modern science." He said that he was an Evangelical Christian, and he felt that the scientific community was "oppressing" Evangelical Christians in that you have a tough time getting a university job if you... believe that the universe is 6,000 years old.

I'm pretty sure the arrogant ones are the creationists who believe they deserve positions even if their beliefs are in total contradiction to the scientific concepts they are supposed to be teaching.

That's like a doctor who doesn't believe in the germ theory and then complains because they're not getting hired.

But homoeopathy works! I believe it, it must thus be respected!!! How dare you not respect my opinions? All opinions must be respected and be considered equally worth!

What a jackass.

Has anyone seen this comic that was in Mad a while back, where some people complain about the school not respecting their views, and then the teacher is explaining how the earth may fly on the back of a giant turtle (Or something similar). One of the kids asks him who thought it was a good idea to respect everyone's views equally, and the teacher tells him there's several theories about that.

It seemed a little to much like reality, rather than absurdism.

What? You mean diluting a substance doesn't make it more powerful? Impossible!

Very true. In fact, some of the best scientists working in the biological sciences are Christian, and devout ones at that.

What I don't understand is why they so eagerly attack biology (when physics and chemistry also support the fact that the world is more than 6,000 years old). And then they claim that they are being oppressed if people don't listen to a silly claim such as "all mutations are harmful - therefore evolution does not occur" .

When your opinions can kill people, it's probably not something that should be respected at all.

Where's that "I'm being oppressed!" when you need it?

I can respect opposing opinions when they're reasonable.

Who is to say which opinons are reasonable?

And for the record, yes, creationism is directly responsible for someone's death.

I think that there is a difference between respecting an opinion and supporting an opinion.

Who is to say which opinons are reasonable?

If its an opinion that has observable consequences in the real world that can be empirically verified, and its predictions don't pan out, it's unreasonable. Especially if there's a wealth of evidence against it and people still cling to it despite being fully aware of it. (homeopathy, creationism, both are included here)
