Japanese Nihontou Sword vs Egg (http://www.devilducky.com/media/59876/)

oddly enough, the sword. Bet you didn't see that coming!

Edit:
Now we've seen a katana take on a egg, how about a colt 45?
specifically, a colt 45 bullet fired at a Katana from a distance of 5m:

One day the egg will win. And the samurai will look very stupid.

I laughed hard.

Also because I mentally added a spray blood effect and some cheesy dialogue.

Hmm, still... Pappenheimer sword > katana. :D

This has been posted quite a few times, and a Zweihander/Dopplehander is still better, simply because it's so much more versatile.

Oh yeah, and a Zweihander could chop a sturdy, solid wood pike in half with one swing. A Katana? Not so much.

Katanas have been used to cut bamboo, and that stuff is HARD. I wouldn't be so sure it couldn't do the same with a pike butt.

A large heavy weapon...versa...tile...

Forgive me for sounding confused, but wtf?

The denser, softer wood will bind and might chip the edge.

I didn't say that the sword would come out in top condition, just that it probably could cut through the pike butt.

I'm suggesting the density of the wood is likely to absorb the cut from the katana and keep it from passing through. The two-hander has the advantage of extra leverage over smaller swords. I wouldn't try cutting pikes with a bastard sword no more then I would with a katana.

The sword was positioned edge on, so, given my understanding of physics (or lack thereof) it doesn't surprise me that the bullet was sliced up. I doubt the outcome would be quite the same if the sword were positioned broadside to the bullet. I suspect (I could be wrong) that if the bullet hit the sword broadside, the sword would be considerably damaged.

Tough steel sharpened to a fine point vs. a blunt soft lead projectile? No competition at all.

The bullet was a wadcutter, no? If that's the case, it makes it all the easier to be sliced.

BTW, if it hadn't hit the katana at the blade's edge, the bullet would have ricocheted and the blade would have been perfectly intact. I also thought they'd do a broad side test.... sadly, nope.

Hence you have more mass being hurled at the target. And then I wikied it just to check.

ahah, wiki is my friend. Yes, it does appear they used a wadcutter. Though I think I referenced that by saying it was blunt. :p

I am sure that had the colt been loaded with different type of ammo, and fired more than one round, it would have eventually broken the sword. Anyone want to guess who wins this one?

Since the sword managed to last 6 bullets hitting it, and countless others missing it then I'd probably say the sword comes out with a better reputation. Especially as that was a 0.50 caliber machine gun which uses the ammo on the far left of the picture below. It can be used on lightly armoured vehicles and each round delivers up to 17.6kJ of energy. The same amount of energy used to distroy the sword would have the average person moving at about 130mph or shoot an average person 175m up into the sky.

This is true. But, take into consideration, practicality. That gun and the bullets that come with are probably much cheaper in time and money when compared to the handforging of a traditional sword. So while the sword comes with a better reputation, the gun is still going to be the victor in most cases.
