Best period of classic rock

IDF

What is the better era of classic rock? The first or the second era?

(note: I classify pre 1965 as Oldies even though some of those songs would get played on classic rock stations).

I personally prefer the 1st one as it has the best music from Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.

I love The Beatles and The Stones, so I went for the 1st one.

But I also love AC/DC, so it was a a hard call.

Classic rock? You mean the crap that sprung up between psychedelic rock and punk?

I'll pass.

Okay, I'm going to have to get you to classify exactly what you mean as 'the two periods of classic rock', because as far as I know, from a 'radio' perspective, the only criteria for it to be classic, is that it has to be twenty years old...

EDIT: I just saw your poll...

You know the best thing about the sixties? They never heard of classic rock."

Mikesburg loves CCR.

Mikesburg almost wishes he was from the Bayou, that's how cool CCR is/was.

Can't stand 'em. Almost as annoying as Zeppelin or Floyd, though not as bad as CCR or ELP.

Elvis is dead. How could you possibly get married to him?

If, by real, you mean Pop, indeed, he does not.

I don't subscribe to the view that popular means 'pop'.

I was originally having a tough time deciding because Eagles, my favourite band, are split right between that period. I went to Dire Straits next, and they were all after 1975 so I picked the later period. Both are great though.

I don't either. I subscribe to the view that major label, empty music with nothing more than a feel-good message means pop.

You honestly think that CCR fits into the same genre as N'SYNC and Backstreet Boys?

No. Just the same broad musical category. I was using the same definitions that music historians use: Art (Music produced with a message/Expression as the primary goal), Pop(Music produced with making money in mind), and Folk(Music with historical roots). Classic Rock is not Art because it was produced for money, and is not folk because it was a new form. Therefore, it is pop.

Music can be produced with profit as the goal that is not empty and nothing more than feel-good.

Bullshit. You cannot have a real message and sell albums. The two cannot be successfully combined. The best you can hope for is enough money that you can afford to keep playing.

Any time I spent listening to southern rock would only take up time that could be better spent listening to more interesting and challenging music, like gabber or industrial, or all sorts of spazzy early 90s punk bands.

If teen pop is pablum, classic rock is kraft dinner. Warm and familiar, yet bland and boring.

Well from the sounds of it, you like buying music with "real meaning" to it, and if though I don't know what specifically you are referring to, that sounds appealing to me as well, so we already have two people willing to shill out money for that quality. Are you sure there aren't enough of us willing to do that to make music with "real meaning" profitable?

The former. Jefferson Airplane, The Fugs, Blue Cheer (whom I will be seeing in concert in 16 days), 13th Floor Elevators, Shocking Blue, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, etc., rule. What would the latter period be, anyway? Kiss, Boston, and Foreigner? Meh.
