Have you ever seen a gun before?

Dismayed at the extensive debate in the other gun threads, and the results of a poll a while back about how many guns people on NSG own, I'm curious about how many people here have never seen a gun in RL before.

I haven't.

Handguns only in the holsters of police officers.

Yes, and they scare the hell out of me.

The only time I am ever afraid around guns is when idiot dickhead hicks are using them. Hunting season, firing their goddamn rifles LONG before daybreak(You know the saying it's always darkest before dawn-that's more or less true. The moonlight is dim, the sun hasn't even started to come up yet, and it's almost impossible to see 10 feet in front of you). Yet, for some ungodly fucking reason, these morons decide to unload their semi-auto, six-round clips one after another at what *might* be a deer. Thank God for my dad's private land. Don't have to worry about that anymore.

Really, in the hands of someone whom is even remotely trained to hold and operate a gun, they are quite safe.

sure

my dad had a russian handgun that he stole off a russian officer in ww2

he had a shotgun, a .22 and something a bit bigger for deer hunting. he would often get home from work during rabbit season and go out back to see if he could kill a rabbit for dinner.

the inlaws keep a shotgun by the door in case of trouble, they use it to shoot skunks and other varmints now and then.

my sister in laws boyfriend has a small arsenal but ive never actually seen it.

my brother in law owns a gun shop in deming new mexico.

Yes, but only once in the context you probably think of, when I had just finished high school and one of my boyfriend's friends ran into us on our way home from the pub and, completely high on something or other, started fighting with my boyfriend and pulled out a gun and held it to his head threatening to pull the trigger.

Apart from an old hunting rifle my dad had (and never used) that was probably the first time I saw a gun. In my safe little quaint rural middle-class hometown where I could have sworn nobody had a gun, to boot.

Other than that, only on police. The police in Bolivia, for one, looked more like military than police. *shivers*

I used to work at Wal*Mart, in the sporting goods department (back when almost every Wal*Mart sold rifles and shotguns). I lost track of how many firearms I've sold in my time there. I eventually made department manager of a sporting goods department at a Wal*Mart, and had to do the monthly firearms inventory (pull each firearm out of the box, check the serial number against the log book, and replace the firearm in the box).

I have also taken the NRA basic pistol course (during which, I handled and fired various pistols, in calibers ranging from .22 to 9mm). I also own an AR-15.

So, to answer your question, I have seen a firearm IRL. :D

Yes, many times. Cops and gangsta's the most. Some of my ex's friends were semi-members of the Spanish Kings, sorta, and I hung out with them in Spanish Harlem a bit last year, and I saw all sorts of things I didn't really want to see, uncluding a few (probably illegal) guns.

In other fun gun related trivia about my life, there were two shooting murders on my old block in Brooklyn during the time I live there, one in Jan. of '90, a month or so after I was born, and another one when I was six. There was also semi-automatic something fire during the middle of the night last summer. I didn't see any of those though.

my sister in laws boyfriend (the one with the small arsenal) is still pissed that he cant buy a .22 rifle from walmart (i dont know why he wanted it but it became a quest of its own after a while). his name comes up on the instant background test as being on a government list. yeah it is, he has one of the highest class of security clearances because he used to work in the nuclear weapons program at sandia labs in albuquerque.

he got that straightened out, then couldnt buy because he only had a PObox address on his driver's license

then he found out that the post office wouldnt give him a mail box out here so he couldnt have a street address.

so, to make a long irrelevant story short, he can know most of the nations nuclear secrets but he cant buy a gun from walmart.

it pisses him off.

Yes, I was going to say I hadn't actually touched one more dangerous than a super soaker, but then I remembered that there was an AK-47 at the war museum that I held. It was loosely secured to a wall such that it would be at a level appropriate for firing while kneeling, presumably so people could have a feel.

... this is going to turn into another retarded anti gun thing. you can say guns are bad all you want. look at england. they took away guns and yes gun crimes went down you know what else happened? stabbings went up just as much as shooting went down. in america there was a study and they found that 3600 VIOLENT crimes are prevented EVERYDAY by the mere PRESENCE of a gun. you can say what your retarded cowardice democratic policies tell you to say or you can do some research and think for your self. by no means am i republican if anything im libertarian or green but the facts stand. more guns = less crime. as a matter of a fact you should all read that book "More guns less crime" and then talk about how bad guns are...yes i have seen a gun and have fired them and i own 3. yes i have been shot at b4 and it didnt frighten me that much but it was a shotgun both times with buck shot so it was just a few pellets when it got to me. another study suggested that most people who have guns are incabable of shooting someone unless it was a life or death situation. i would go out on a limb and say that for every gun crime there are 4 crimes that are stopped with guns... think about it this way: if someone breaks into your house while your sleeping and they have a knife. your as good as dead if you dont have a gun. but if you had a gun, even if it wasnt loaded, you would probably neutralize the situation. Also guns are much safer than knives when kept unloaded and away from the ammunition

Yeah, but only hunting rifles. I know we've got a handgun or two on hand, but I haven't seen them since they're kept in the old gun cabinet in the basement, which IIRC has been locked for most of the past 20 years or so. The hunting rifles were oddly enough stored in an upstairs closet after we moved because we couldn't get the cabinet open.

Yeah, thats the cool thing with surplus rifles; you can always wonder what places it's been, what battles it faught, and how many nazis it killed.

And nah, I haven't tried the 2km sights on it yet. I can't get out to the range nearly as often as I would like. But it's still funneh. Everyone there with $1500 Bushmaster AR-15 clones and $300 Aks, and you there with your quaint little $80 bolt action with the huge arse bayonet.

A couple years ago I had a transfer at LAX (going to visit family in Hawaii) and I saw a guy in desert-camo fatigues standing attentively at a security point, and he had a big, shiny rifle. 31-03-2007, 10:18
Here's something interesting: in all my interactions with police officers, their pepper spray is infinitely more conspicuous than their firearm. During field trips, kids would ask to see the gun but the officers refused flat-out, though they would talk about them (make, calibre, range, weight, etc.) but they would never EVER show them to us. My step-dad had a misunderstanding with an RCMP officer (really, the epitome of the "misunderstanding," as my step-dad is a 150 lb. vegetarian teetotaller who just happened to have a broken taillight...) and even though the cop was yelling at us, he had his hand on his 2-way radio, not his pistol. However, recently there has been legislation passed to allow the private security guards who check tickets on the metro to carry guns. Hmmmm...

That IS fucking scary. I'd back away as soon as I see something like that.

Actually, the most important thing to do with dogs is to not show fear(And for the love of God, do not run away-It only excites them more). The best you can really do is walk away, at a brisk pace if you wish, keeping an eye on the animal.

Also-never look a dog in the face. Makes them uncomfortable, and can be perceived as a threat.

Now then, if approached by an unfamiliar dog, make lots of noise, yelling, and violent gestures(Such as waving your arms about). Think of a raving lunatic. Usually, this is more than enough to scare most dogs off. Infact, throwing stuff in the general direction of the dog(You don't need to hurt it or hit it-often times just the act of getting stuff thrown at it can turn a dog away). Not "fetch" style, either, as that is useless. Unfortunately, as dogs are domesticated, you will run into a few that will not be a afraid, and sometimes aggressive. If this happens, I hate to say this(As I love dogs), but your may have to hit the dog, HARD. Not a love tap on the nose, but a good solid boot to the side. Show the dog who's boss, type thing(Just make sure to keep your face protected). Dogs still have that "pack mentality", and if you show yourself to be bigger and better than it is, often times they may back off after a single, hard hit(Do this only if the dog is showing aggressiveness, and option 1 does not work). Then there is the unfortunate cases of extremely aggressive dogs(Usually they are like this due to humans being complete asswhipes). Unfortunately, I'm not terribly sure what to do in this situation.

However, your best bet, is to never, under any circumstance, approach a dog you don't know. All dogs have different personalities, and one that seems friendly may very well not be. If you see one that is particularily a threat, that is not on someone's property(And/or you don't know it), call animal control. They'll know how to handle it far better than you can.

Really, I'm afraid of no dogs, chained or not. Simply put, know how to act, and respecting their space, often times will work wonders.

I have indeed. Held them and fired them, too. A Glock 9mm and a 12 guage shotgun. And I'm not American.

I've seen guns, gone shooting with guns, and seen Nicaraguan Army soldiers walking around with guns.

I'm American...

I've owned several handguns and rifles, and have a Concealed Carry Permit. I've also fired virtually every weapon in the US Army's inventory, including 8" self-propelled howitzers. Sometimes I have fired guns with the intent of killing.

Guns are like any other tool in that they can be used for the function for which they were designed, and will do only that which you make them do. Guns are UN-like any other tool in that they can cause great harm when improperly used. Guns must be handled with extreme respect and caution, and always with the understanding that they can cause loss of life ... yours as well as someone else's.

Generally, I don't see how much fun they can be. I much prefer martial arts.

And guns are powerfull.

I'll forgo the whole argument about the possibility of technology being good or bad in-itself, and thus challenging the mentality that "guns don't kill people, people kill people".

So, exactly what function were guns designed for that doesn't intend harm? "Quit giving guns to our soldiers! For god's sake, they're using them WRONG!" :sniper:

And I can think of lots of tools which cause great harm when improperly used: hammers, knives, shovels, cars, electrical outlets, toasters, stairs, duct tape, plastic bags, snow chains... huh. I guess guns aren't so special after all.

Pistols and sometimes machineguns carried by police around europe. And some hunting rifles. But I've never fired one, and probably never will.

I have seen guns before.
I have handled a rifle once, and fired it at a target under close supervision from my uncle.

I prefer my itty bitty recurve target bow. :-D

Dad's in the army. Brother's going to join the army as soon as he can. I've fired everything from a Dragunov sniper rifle to an AK47. Hell, I've got a gun on the shelf behind me now.

And I'm British.

first off, thank you for your service and sacrifice.

i dissagree however with your statement that other tools are not equally dangerous to oneself and others.
more people die from auto wrecks in this country
then probably anything else..i am sure auto fatalities dwarf firearm related deaths by a factor of 10.
i myself almost lost my leg to a chainsaw...not even being careless...the safety on the saw malfunctioned and the tree i was cutting down(it was dead and on an angle)bounced up when it fell, knocking the saw from me and it grazed my leg about mid thigh.a couple more inches and i would have bled out in the forest.
probably saving untold amounts of women from my advances, and boring the hell out of many more.
i also famously shot a nail thru my thumb with a nail gun by accident...nailing it to a table...ouch!
i wont even get into my motorcyle accidents(broken back, broken feet, broken ribs, broken wrist, broken collarbone, fractured skull, numerous broken fingers) and i am pretty sure i aint alone in that department.

as for the topic...i have an ak-47,a .270 bolt action with a 6-24-50 illuminated scope,a mossburg 12 gauge pump shotty with 4 different types of barrels,a marlin 1895 guide gun in 45-70(lever action for bear country)a scoped .22 for plinking,a .38 snub nosed revolver,a .45 auto(colt commander)a taurus pt-92 9mm,and i am going to pick up a .454 taurus(also for bear country)and a car-15 for the hell of it..well actually so i can carry more ammo and it is pretty cheap to shoot.
also going to get into reloading for target shooting and economics.
i have over 6000 rounds of 7.62-39 stored up the mountains,1000 rounds of .270,1000 rounds of slugs and sabots, and another 500 of misc. types of shot shells,i cant count the .22 stuff i got,not much stored for the pistols/revolvers...dont shoot them too often, just a hundred or so for each.same with the 45-70..that is one exspensive gun to shoot, ergo the reloading idea.
so yea i have seen some guns!

never fired a shot in anger though...not in 30 years of shooting..and never thought to go for a gun in my myriad arguments/fights.

i did have an a/d....twice...very scary.

I, like most Finnish males, have seen and used an assault rifle. I'd guess pretty much everyone has seen a gun, since people go see their son's/boyfriend's/brother's military parades.
