I'm sick of the deification of soldiers and the idolatry that Americans treat their military with.

They're just like other humans. They die.

My grandfather was a soldier. He was old, then he died.

I think McArthur should have spent more time in school.

Didnt he steal that from a British poem?

and changed from "only fade away" to "just fade away"?

I can vouch for this. It also leads to the collapse of the system. Just one solder point in my turntable was the reason for it failing :p

This wouldn't suprise me. We (Americans) have taken alot from the motherland including the nation itself...

He wouldn't have "faded away" if he had followed the orders of his commander in chief. Instead of being an arrogant bastard who was too interested in his own ego.

He didn't "steal" it:

"[...]I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barrack ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that "old soldiers never die; they just fade away."
And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty."

Not enough decent people to debate. Not enough people who may disagree with you who will still respect your opinions and your right to disagree with them. You know those like Nazz who will actually debate and from whom you can learn.

Way to many people who claim to be open minded and respectful of others who are intolerant bigots if you hold an opinion they do not agree with. You know, people like Fass who hate everyone and everything that is not gay, is American, and does not agree with him.

I'll say the same as I did to Smunk: Use the Ignore function, choose your threads wisely, and stick to the people you can agree to disagree with.

But take a break, take a breather, and come back. There are good debaters here, you just have to know where to look - and where to not respond. :)

I don't hate you, even if I must say that it's fun to see you flatter yourself so much as to think you register high enough on my radar to be worthy of hate. I do despise every little vile and wretched thing you stand for, though, and will not hide that sentiment under some false sense of civility, because your ilk is not worthy of that either.

Well, in America we sort of have to deify our soldiers, as the present Goverment as givin them nothing but absolute and total dispair.

Thanks Grav, but it's not time to take a vacation but to leave. It's like I told people at my old job "when the fun goes out of the job so do I." It did and so did I.

Celtlund, grow up. You're over sixty years old, so stop being so full of yourself.

Same to you, Fass. You're overly opinionated and so thoroughly convinced of your own superiority that you are, in fact, just as bad as those you despise.

Frankly, I don't care if Celtlund leaves or not. I honestly don't, and I think anyone that makes a thread talking about their leaving is someone I shouldn't care about because they're too full of their own self-importance. So you're leaving an internet forum: who really cares?

I was just reading that statement, and a couple of days ago I saw a program on Canadian soldiers seeking compensation for post traumatic stress syndrome in addition to other ailments following their time spent in countries like Rwanda, so for me his statement does carry some truth in that returning soldiers can get ignored by the government when its convenient. In that sense they fade away. I doubt he meant what I picked him up to mean though.

Exactly why I'd never make such a thread should I decide to stop coming on NS (perish the thought ) since you mind end up with a thread full of "so what" and "meh". :p
