A complex river crossing riddle

Sel Appa

My sister's friend told my sister this riddle and it was then told to me. None of us are able to get it. I have had several ideas and two failed...epiphanies, if you will.

There are are two sides of a river. The entire party must cross. There is only one boat that fits two. Several conditions apply.
-cop
-criminal (cannot be with others without cop)
-mom (cannot be alone with son(s))
-dad (cannot be alone with daughter(s))
-2 daughters
-2 sons

There are only two sides to a river. The boat is mainly figurative and cannot hold anyone.

PS: 10 posts to go! Wot!

Anyone know how to solve these? I know there's one with a dog, cat, mouse and farmer or fox, rabbit, and plant with a farmer...

I apologize for not saying that only the cop, mom, and dad can drive the boat.

The Cop dispenses justice to the Criminal in the form of a bullet.

Daughter takes other Daughter across. Daughter then takes over Mom.

Daughter rides over, takes the boat back for the two sons. Son gets Dad, then Dad collects the Cop and returns to shore.

The cop shoots the criminal and the two child-molesting parents, then rows the kids over one at a time.

Mom takes the boat along with a daughter, then returns for the other daughter.
Dad cant be alone with daughter.

1.The cop goes over with the criminal
2.The mom goes over with the dad
3.One son goes with one daughter
4.Last son goes with last daughter

I think thats it...

the problem is someone has to bring the boat BACK each time.
Arthais101

Got it. I will use | to differentiate who is on what side at what time.

starting:

cop, crook, mom, dad, daughter 1, daughter 2, son 1, son 2 | nobody

Step 1: daughter 1 brings daughter 2 over, daughter 1 returns with boat:

cop, crook, mom, dad, daughter 1, son 1, son 2 | daughter 2

Step 2: daughter 1 takes son 1, daughter 1 takes boat back:

cop, crook, mom, dad, daughter 1, son 2 | daughter 2, son 1

Step 3: Daughter 1 takes over son 2, son 2 LEAVE daughter 1 there, returns with boat:

cop, crook, mom, dad, son 2 | daughter 1, daughter 2, son 1

Step 4: son 2 takes dad over, son 2 and dad get off, DAUGHTER 2 takes boat back:

cop, crook, mom, daughter 2 | daughter 1, son 1, son 2, dad

Step 5: daughter 2 takes mom, daughter 2 returns:

cop, crook, daughter 2 | daughter 1, son 1, mom, dad, son 2

Step 6: cop takes crook over, cop and crook get off, mom takes boat back:

daughter 2, mom | cop, crook, daughter 1, son 1, son 2, dad

Step 7: mom and daughter go over

explanation: it only says mother can't be ALONE with son(s). Likewise it only says dad can't be ALONE with daughters. As long as SOMEONE else is there, it's fine. Additionally, never says the children can't row the boat. At no time is a mother and son, or a father and daughter alone either on one side, or in the boat. Likewise at no time is the criminal not in the presence of the cop.

Both sons row across.
Son rows back.
Dad and son row across.
Dad rows back.
Mom and dad row across.
Mom rows back.
Mom and daughter row across.
Daughter rows back.
Both daughters row across.
Daughter rows back.
Cop and daughter row across.
Cop rows back.
Cop and criminal row across.

Each child is always either alone or with at least one of the cop, the same sex parent, or the same sex sibling. The criminal is always either alone or with the cop.

2.Cop gets the dad they go to the other side, then the cop gets out, then the dad goes back
3.Dad gets first son, takes him to the other side, then goes back
4.Dad gets second son, takes him to the other side, then goes back
5.Dad takes mom to the other side, then dad gets out, mom goes back
6.Mom gets first daughter to the other side, then goes back
7.Mom gets second daughter to the side, and they are all there.

Now I think I have it.

Edit:I see people figured it out while I was thinking and writing.

As the criminal's description says he can not be alone with the others, and not that he can not be alone at all:

Move the criminal.
Move the cop.
Move one son.
Move one daughter.
Move the mother.
Move the father.
Move the last son.
Move the last daughter.

question, can the children row the boat?

In every version of the problem I've seen before, no they can't.

There's a Flash version of the game here (http://freeweb.siol.net/danej/riverIQGame.swf). It's in Japanese, but the big round blue button starts.

Think it went something like:
Cop + crim, cop back
Cop + boy1, cop + crim back
Bloke + boy2, bloke back
Bloke + woman, woman back
Cop + crim, bloke back
Bloke + woman, woman back
Woman + girl1, cop + crim back
Cop + girl2, cop back
Cop + crim, win.

But excuse me if I've missed a step anywhere!

(After Preview: looks like I'm too late!)

Either way, seems the minimum number of round trips to do this is 7.

It is impossible to do it in any less as we have to get 8 people across the river, and there must be someone rowing back the boat 6 times.

1. Cop & Criminal. Criminal leaves boat.

2. Cop & Mum. Cop leaves boat.

3. Mum & Daughter. Daughter leave boat.

4. Mum & Daughter. Daughter leave boat.

5. Mum & Dad. Mum leaves boat.

6. Dad & Son. Dad leaves boat.

7. Son & Son. Both leaves boat.

The Criminal will be with copper when with others.
Dad won't be alone with Daughters as the Sons are there.
Mum won't be alone with Sons as others are there.

feh, you had to go and ring math into it.

Depending on the width of the river, the people could form a human chain holding hands in the water so that they are able to pull the boat back without anybody in it...

it doesnt say the kids cant row and it doesnt say that the criminal cant be on one side all by himself.

just cant leave the criminal with the others or the parents alone with a child of the opposite sex.

i go with gartref's first solution, the criminal and the pedophillic parents get a bullet to the head. problem solved.

Not in the Flash version; that counts as the Father being alone with the Daughter (despite the Policeman's presence).

All answers that start with a parent crossing leaves the other parent with a child of the different sex - no good.

You have to start with the cop + criminal but from there they're out of the equation since one cannot cross without the other.

You then come to 3 kids on 1 side with 2 parents and 1 kid on the other, beyond that it's beyond me.
