2007 MLB Opening Day Megathread

IDF

Opening Day for the Mets and Cards is on Sunday. The rest of Major League Baseball should open on either Monday or Tuesday.

Let us celebrate the greatest American holiday.

I'm going to be in Chicago monday since a friend of mine had an extra ticket for me to see the Jose Contreras and the Sox kill whoever the Tribe puts in for the injured Crooked Cap Fatbathia.

This will be the first opening day I've attended in person. It should be exciting.

Matsuzaka's success won't mean a thing when Papelbon is joining Beckett and Schilling on the DL. (or being lit up) Remember the 19 inning game?

Actually no. Does not matter. Sox are not winning the Central nor winning the ALCS nor the World Series.

So the Red Sox will start out poorly and than come back with a vengeance. They did it before they can do it again. Besides I see all three in the rotation list. At the moment anyway.

Considering your teams long losing streak you really shouldn't talk.

Anyway, we should be glad we both got ourselves a championship.

They better have a stronger team this year than they had last year. They came in 3rd in the AL East, behind the Blue Jays last year.

Given the injuries the Sox suffered and had to play through in their last couple months I'm not surprised they fell apart like they did. Depressing but it was simple reality when you lose so many players to the DL.

And given Schilling's age I see no reason why he won't spend the bulk of the season on the DL.

If they have to I don't see why Papelbon can't be made a starter. Though I don't have any pessimistic thoughts when it comes to the Sox. So I'm not going to fear for Schilling's health. Nope. So worrying about the starting rotation won't even come to mind.

Papelbon has some health issues too. He was going to be the 5th starter, but team doctors said his arm can't take it. I mean he threw way less than 100 innings last year and had arm trouble. Imagine if he threw 160-170 (which is what I'd expect from a 5th starter).

He also became pretty hittable around July once batters started to figure his stuff out.

Actually, CC's arm is fine; he's still going on opening day. And he will pwn the White Sux.

I won't be there, but I'll be at the bar, watching on the big screen. I'll look for you. I'm sure you'll be the one holding the sign saying "Damn, CC, stop making our guys look so baaaad..." :D

You never know about how is health will change in the coming months. Besides, optimist I am, I will believe Papelbon's own words when he said that he loves being a closer and wants to remain one for the rest of his career, nothing about arm issues.

We faced CC last year and kicked his ass on opening day. Too bad I couldn't be there. It would've been fun even with the 3 hour rain delay.

Even if CC does well, you guys still have no bullpen so the Sox would just come back from behind late in the game. I saw Joe BLOWrowski pitch as a closer on the northside. He was a bum then and he is a bum now.

I've learned something about closers. (Having Foulke on the White Sox taught me this lesson) If a closer doesn't have a fireball pitch (see Bobby Jenks) or a breaking ball that defies the laws of physics (see Mariano Rivera), then his career as a closer will be shortlived for the league will figure him out and beat the crap out of him.

Believe me, this is true. I can list off the Sox closers who burned out in just the last 5 years. Keith Foulke, Damaso Marte, Billy Koch, and Shingo Takatsu. All showed promise and busted. The only thing that has kept Bobby Jenks good the last 2 years is the fact he has a 100 mph fastball and a high 80s slider.

I wouldn't go so far as to say 'you kicked his ass'. The score was 2-0 in the third when he got hurt. And CC's better than any starter the Sox have. Sorry, but that's true.

Eh, bullpen could be a weak spot. But it won't be as bad as it was last year. It can't be; it's basically impossible. Last year was a fluke with the bullpen, and the infield defense. And both have improved.

Go Cardinals. Though I find it more than a little bit ironic that we won the Series after the kind of regular season we had last year.

Can we repeat? Hell, yes.

Failing that, thoroughly dominating the Cubs would be nice. After all, that's what they're there for. The day the Cubs win the World Series (or even make it there, for that matter), I shall know that the wheels have fallen off the reality cart, and that all semblance of balance and order in the Universe has been dreadfully upset, probably beyond repair.

Yeah, surprise surprise. With the baseball season comes the haters...time and time again Cubs fans are subjected to the mindless dribble of Sox and Tards fans alike. I got news for both of them. Nobody gave a fuck when you guys won the World Series. In fact, I'll even go as far as saying last year's World Series was the most pathetic, forgettable excuse for a competition.

Can you repeat? Good luck. Duncan's gonna have his work cut out for him this year. Kip Wells? Braden fucking Looper? Are you kidding me? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Yeah, Ted Lilly and Six Plus aren't exactly studs either but you're going to have a tough time selling the Tards as next year's World Champions.

I like Rich Hill; I drafted him in some of my leagues this year. He's got a lot of talent, a lot of upside, but he's still pretty much unproven as a ML pitcher. Only about a 1/2 season's worth of innings so far, IIRC.

Might be a bit premature to count on him in that fashion, at least at this point in his career.

If you don't like the sport, stay out of the discussion. I certainly couldn't give two shits what you're entertained by.

As for the season itself, why am I not surprised the Cubbies lost? Look for another Chi-town stomping Wednesday, when Bronson "Cubskiller" Arroyo takes the mound. That's one thng that's always fascinated me about the Northsiders. Nothing against Harang, as he's fairly decent as far as pitchers go, but we always seem to make the nobodies look like Cy Young II.

Oh, and did anybody hear the latest? Same Zell has purchased the Tribune Company...the Cubs are for sale!

I was at the game yesterday. It was my first opening day. I was blowing chunks though during that first inning.

Jose just couldn't get his forkball over for a strike. He basically was just throwing fastballs. The Indian hitters knew he couldn't get the forkball over so they let Jose get the count to 2-0 or 3-1 and just sat on the fastballs.

This sort of thing happens to pitchers. For some reason they can't get all of their pitches to work on some days. Without a forkball, Conteras is very hittable.

If forced, I'd have to declare myself a Seattle Mariners fan, and long before the so-called "magic" season of 1995, which was engineered to keep the team in Seattle and build Safeco Field. Now that the field is built, the team blows again, but that's Seattle for you, regardless of the sport.

You need to relax, pal. The game is far too dull to get that excited about. Then again, if you dig paying millionaires to play a child's game, then who am I to criticize? I'll tell you who I am. Me. That's who. And so long as there is breath in my lungs...er...fingers...or...whatever, I'll post in open forums, thank you. Please, continue your tirade if it makes you feel like a manly man.

Yeah, because we all know David Beckham doesn't make a million dollars. Neither does Ronaldinho, right? Oh, and the top cricket players don't make £350,000, or get £500,000 for series wins, right? Here's the bottom line, bubba. Sports=Big Money. Any sport, whether it be strictly American or it spans the globe, overpays. Soccer, football, baseball, basketball, and even cricket...these guys are knocking down big cash. So if you watch sports, if you buy team merchandise, you're paying millionaires to play a "child's sport". I take it you don't like sports then?

Santana's usually a bit of a slow starter. He's going to have to have a monster second half if he's going to catch Felix Hernandez.

Felix yesterday:

29 batters faced
1 flyball
14 groundballs
2 walks

This is your comeback to the millionaire children argument? Really? The fact that other athletes make insane amounts of money? You've actually gone ahead and made my argument for me, there, Janice. I love sports. Baseball isn't a sport, it's a pageant.

Do I go into cricket and soccer threads and tell their fans they're about as interesting as a pair of flies fucking? In other words, stop polluting this thread with your dribble.

Cluttering a thread about baseball is akin to watering seaweed in its natural habitat...it's redundant.

Incidentally, why'd you bring up cricket and soccer? You assume that because I dislike baseball that means I like a baseball cousin or soccer at all, let alone more? The only thing more dull than a professional cricket or soccer match is a baseball game...or perhaps NASCAR.

Grow some skin, Cheryl.

Back on topic -- the Mariners will suck this year as they've sucked all along since 1996. They got their stadium, so there's no need to build a team that'll convince folks to support them anymore. It's just plain sad that the one thing Seattle's always needed, they can never seem to get. Pitching. In 1995, there was Randy Johnson and a host of other not-bad hurlers like Jamie Moyer, but they were slowly elided, as wre Ken Griffey, Jose Cruz Jr., Alex Rodriguez (though he's a money-grubbing, overrated, super-****, so that wasn't really Seattle management's fault).

I watched when I was nine. The old trident logo was cool, and so were Julio Cruz, Alvin Davis, Bill Caudill, Harold Reynolds, and even the borrowed Gaylord Perry. I was thrilled with the 1995 playoffs, beating the Angels in the one-game entree and than coming back from 2 games to 0 to beat the hated Yankees 3 games to 2 in what the NY Times called "that garage" (The Kingdome). But then came 2001, and winning 116 games and adding Ichiro Suzuki...and losing miserably in the ALDS because of no pitching. The trade deadline came and went that year with NO activity from Seattle management.

I decided then and there to never watch another big league game. I now watch the Everett Aquasox of the Northwest A league. Much cheaper, and more fun. I love Safeco Field, and many of the people who made that place possible are heroes to the region: Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner and even Lou Pinella. But those players that other teams didn't lure away or steal, retired.

I feel the same way about pro basketball, and I'm getting there with pro football, too. I still love the Olympics and World Cup soccer. But no more major league baseball. Too many teams, too little actual talent.

I'm done.

Well, you can at least take some solace in the fact that the Washington Nationals are going to lose more games than the Royals this year.

Actually, KC's future is a lot brighter than a lot of people might be inclined to think. Their GM took over a depleted farm system a couple of years ago, and he's done a heckuva job getting it re-stocked. Guys like Billy Butler, Luke Hochevar, and Chris Lubanski are going to be very good when they break through to the bigs. And they've already got some good, young talent at KC in the form of Teahen, Shealy, Greinke (if his head is screwed on straight), and of course Gordon.

Of course, they were so bad to begin with that it's going to take a couple of years for the dividends to start paying off. But they will. Don't assume for one second though that they'll ever catch the Indians...:)

I used to be one -- a Tribe fan, that is. Of course, when I lived in Ohio and rooted for them, there wasn't much to cheer about. They'd win the first few games, then start battling for last place.

In '94, I think the Expos would have won the division and gone on to greater glory, but the MLB players association didn't want to see that played out. I enjoyed the '95 World Series much more than the next year's.

For me, the absolute worst thing about the 95 series (besides the fact that Cleveland lost) was the fact that I was in the army, stationed in Kentucky (which was really Tennessee, but that's another story) at the time...and practically everyone in or from the South is a Braves fan. Including my squad leader and platoon sergeant. I must've bet a million push-ups on that damn series. At least I got a good workout.

You can thank Ted Turner and TBS for that. Even though WGN shows all the Cubs games, people seem to pick up on the Braves and TBS if they don't have a team nearby. We were in Orlando last week and most of the places that had TVs were showing the Braves rather than the Marlins.

If this event is simply dismissed, nest you'll see offers made in advance of critical series, causing teams to throw everything they have at one opponent just the eran the reward, though risking harm to their season overall in doing so.

This the EXACTLY what Rule 21 is supposed to prevent. It's posted inside every clubhouse (and specifically, it's posted outside the manager's door in Minnesota).

Okay, I see your point. Fine the guy. No need to hang him.

This NL East division is putting on a pretty good show. Mets and Braves are neck and neck for first and only the Nats are really out of it.
