Mr. Secretary:

You are one hell of an improvement over your predecessor. Thank you. Who knows, you may yet redeem my faith in Bush's ability to pick a good adviser every so often.

i suppose it just means that they have dealt with all the questionable cases (mostly by letting the obviously innocent go, but they did manage to get a guilty plea out of the aussie who is going back home to potential 10 years in prison) they can keep the ones who are left in US facilities until they can be tried and convicted of serious crimes then kept in US prison for the rest of their lives.

guantanamo should be shut down as soon a possible.

Shut down Guantanamo, try the "hard core" people, get a conviction, release the others. Do that yesteryear.

So...how long until Gates is fired? I'm betting three weeks tops.

Dubya wouldn't dare.

Gates has already made moves that are immensely popular with the troops and the people. King George can't afford to boot the man who has the chance to fix most of the problems with the DoD. He is the most popular Cabinet Secretary by far. Bush has already abandoned the neocons, and trust me, the bastards are squawking.

Gonzalez is on the ropes and likely to be forced out of his job within days, mostly because he is a lying sack of crap and he picked the wrong Congress to lie to. Republicans and the President are going to feed Al Gonzalez to the wolves of political expedience and point to Gates as the "new" way of doing business. Republicans are going pragmatic, they are not going to let Gonzalez stick around, embarass them and further cripple their re-election chances.

Rice has been following Gate's examples like a Ferragamo wearing puppy dog, because she never was a leader, just a follower. So State is getting it's act together leaving Al Gonzalez as the last surviving "true believer" of the big three Cabinet Departments.

i dont have a big problem with the US picking people up and detaining them.

i have a huge problem with keeping people for years without charges or trials. its just not right.

guatanamo needs to have been shut down years ago.

I agree. The problem isn't detaining, it's the part about indefinitely that's troublesome.

They should have been tried or at the very least charged years ago.

And of course the image of America as a nation that flaunts the rule of law while at the same time claiming to be the champion of liberty and bringer of democracy does irreparable harm to the country (Not to mention the allegations of torture and coercion), but that's just a side note...
