Who are some people you admire that no one you know has heard of (or that is little known, in spite of being "famous")?
For me, Étienne Tshisekedi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89tienne_Tshisekedi) and Donat Lieko Mahele come to mind.

I only know of his name because of Buckminsterfullerene.

Diane Rehm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Rehm). Avid NPR fans know her, but anyone outside that circle has no clue who I'm talking about.

They use 'Bucky balls' to store antimatter, if I recall correctly, in conjunction with magnetic fields.

Obscure heroes, eh? Well, I definitely have to nominate Joel Hodgson followed closely by, I suppose, Thomas Pynchon.

Robert Sawyer, the author. Perhaps not a hero-worship kind of hero, but certainly obscure.

Dude!!
I don't really have a hero who is that obscure. I idolise Dave Gorman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Gorman) but most british people should know him and he has been a correspondant on the Daily Show..

Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín, he was the Mexican general who defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo. While I am sure he is known in Mexico I think that he, and the Mexican army, should be more recognized in America for the victory that day. The French represented a real threat to America at the time as well as Mexico.

Dan Savage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Savage) for his sex advice column so Americans who have suffered from a crappy sex ed have a place to ask questions & Tim Riley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Riley) for his love of language.
