According to a U.S. Army report out of Iraq obtained by U.S. News, American troops, acting as advisers for Iraqi border guards, were recently surrounded and attacked by a larger unit of Iranian soldiers, well within the border of Iraq.

It's the first time I've seen one of this incidents publicized. These incidents have occurred countless times before but I wonder if the army publishing a report means anything.

Why are border guards well within the border of Iraq?

The Iranian government must be suicidal.

Perhaps this is a case of rogue factions in the military? Like you said, attacks like this that are government sanctioned would have to be suicidal in nature. Despite what some people might think, the government of Iran is not insane or stupid.

Anyone who takes religion as seriously as they do is both insane and stupid.

The Dalai Lama forgot my birthday.

You'r supposed to be dead! :p

Yeah but if this a government sponsored attack then Iran is suicidal. If this is a miltary faction breaking away from the Iranian government then Iran would condemn them as much as everyone else....at least on the surface.

It is possible that Iranians thought they were in Iranian territory, according to U.S. military officials. Such border confusions and disputes happen routinely.

Nope, because they know there's nothing anyone can do about them, at least without hurting our interests in the process.

That the months remaining for the current US admin are running out, and they really really really want to get a few bombs dropped on Iran before they go.....

Sure there is. Just bomb their homes at about 3 AM local time with an F117 or B2. You'd be likely to take them out along with their families.

I'm waiting for more evidence before I pass any judgment.

I'll try to find some civvie sources but it's pretty common knowledge within the military that these engagements occur with frequency along the border. Not sure where to look to find news reports about any but I'd have to guess that any specific engagement debriefs would require some sort of security clearance to have access to.

It's not a question of frequency, although that has some bearing as well, but rather whether there's some kind of unofficial border dispute between Iran and the US going on.
