Is Futurama the Matt Groening version of Red Dwarf?

Is it?
For reference (http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/)
Similarities:

*Lister and Fry are very much alike and they both get frozen in a stasis tube in episode 1

*it involves quantum physics+hilarity :D

*Fry and Lister both went to the past to ensure they were born

*videogames and internet are the same and even the googles and other hardware required for gameplay look exactly the same Fry's gear (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX5OOZJABCM) Compare with the gear from "Gunmen of the Apocalypse"

*life like hallucinations (Leela and the bee, Dwarfers and suicide squid)

Differences:

*Red Dwarf is apocalyptic

*he Dwarfers barely contact other human life because its a rarity unless they go back in time or play a special computer game

*In Futurama meeting other human life is common since they live in the big apple

Dis I miss anything? Thoughts?

there are some similarities but really they seem to be pretty common sci fi plot devices. Neither one of them are exactly unique in those regards.

Out of all the sci-fis I've seen those two seem to fit together like guanine and cytosine compared to all the rest which are mainly crews on a special ship wandering space as fleets of aliens fight each other and catch our heroes in the middle.

well both of those shows were based on a similar premise. To take a bunch of sci fi cliches and torque them in wierd ways. The fact that since both serve to make parodies of sci fi cliches, they may well deal with similar material.

I don't remember Lister going back into the past to ensure he was born. Which episode was that?

Since they both parody the genre, it stands to reason that they will depict similar things.

Damn you for reminding me how good Red Dwarf was. I'm now going to have to go out and buy all the Red Dwarf DVDs, to go with my complete set of Futurama DVDs.

Fry is his own grandfather and Lister is his own father. If they didn't go back in time to do "the nasty in the pasty" they would have never been born.

There's Backwards, Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers, Last Human and Primordial Soup (which is a collection of scripts). There might be more that I can't remember, and I haven't got a clue which order they were released in.

IWCD is clearly the best, though.

They do diverge though after the Grant/Naylor split. They each wrote a different ending. Naylor's end to the story was a bit soppy in my opinion.

I wouldn't say they're the same at all.

The main supporting characters are Arnold Rimmer, and The Cat in Red Dwarf. Whereas in Futurama the main supporting characters are Bender and Leela. Ergo the interactions between the 3 main characters will be different, making for different plots.

Red Dwarf is better in my humble opinion. Futurama just doesn't have cult classic stamped all over it.

Actually, that's just a rumour we students spread to validate us sponging taxes off the state to pay for beer.

Heh, I know, don't worry. I was a student until an unfortunate event occurred last year - my graduation. :p

Yeah, but Rimmer/Leela fulfil a 'sticking to the rules; senior in rank but not respected' role while Cat/Bender are in a 'not quite human; very vain; utterly self centred' role. Therefore it's fair to say there's a parallel.

When Rimmer left, he was replaced by Kochanski, who took over as the 'sticking to the rules; senior in rank but not respected' person.

Ah, but do you have/have you read all the books?

I have read three novels and the script book and own one of the novels and the script book.

Sadly I have only been able to afford series 3,4,5,6,7.

Fry is his own grandfather and Lister is his own father. If they didn't go back in time to do "the nasty in the pasty" they would have never been born.

With lister he didn't go back in time to father himself, he had himself born in his present then shipped the kiddie back in time.

They're both good programmes, but their similarities are actually quite few. Furthermore, where those similarities are common sci-fi concepts that were not invented by Red Dwarf, Futurama can hardly be accused of stealing them thence.

Comparing Bender to Cat is like comparing a Pimp to a fashionista. Don't go there.

The two series are set (sometimes) in space. The similarity ends here.

I'm not trying to suggest that the characters are ripped off, only that they fulfill certain roles in terms of the plot and of the way humour is created from the conflict between the different characters.
