Favorite Obscure President?

Mine would have to be Calvin Coolidge. The only thing I can fault him for is his monetary policy, in which so many dollars were uncovered by gold deposits. Otherwise, he was a wise and able president under whom we had 7% economic growth per year (the highest ever), low taxes, low unemployment (3.3%), and a reduction of national debt. Not to mention he said this

Four-fifths of all our troubles would disappear, if we would only sit down and keep still.

Polk!

Just 'cause my friends and I would say "Who's the greatest President? POLK!" and then we'd poke each other.

Actually, his foreign policies were pretty interesting...

Oh, I thought you meant somebody who did absolutely nothing, and therefore should be obscure. Go figure.

Yeah, but that growth happened to lead to the Depression with his laissez-faire approach. ;) I do love him for being simple, quiet, and efficient.

Who is your favorite obscure president?

Dunno. Cleveland for running three times and winning two, James Buchanan for wearing blinders at a bad time ("Secession? What? Excuse me, my 'roomate' is calling").

I like William Jennings Bryan for sticking around for so long. A running joke in our US II class is to guess any Cabinet or ambassador position as WJB.

"FDR chose as running mate in '32. . ."
"William Jennings Bryan!"
"He's still dead, amazingly."

Thirded on Calvin Coolidge. He's got a sweet name and his quotes make me laugh. Especially the three word's one.

Mmmm, that's more the result of the pyramid of debt that was created by having so few gold reserves to back up so much money. Which I mentioned.

I say William Henry Harrison.

He was badass enough to give a reeaaally long speech in the freezing rain. And died for it.

And was pretty clueless when running. Just this dirt poor old 1812 veteran. The whigs were all "Well, no one hates him?" And when the Democrats tried to insult him with the 'log cabin' and drinking a lot, he turned that into a compliment.

Polk is just plain awesome.

Benjamin Harrison is cool in that he can get away with "Some of my best friends are under 10 years of age" and was even more clueless than his awesome grandfather...

Heh. We have the same joke in our US II class as well.

I must say Calvin Coolidge is my favourite obscure president, partly because he was born in Vermont.

1. Coolidge.
2. Hoover. People blamed him for the depression and say that he didn't try to do anything to end it. I think he was just elected at the wrong time. The Depression was the result of easy credit and banks investing peoples' savings in the stock market in order to gain money faster. Once the stock market crashed, millions of people lost their savings because the banks were dumbasses. Hoover tried to end the depression by calming the public down and setting up public works projects to lower unemployment by creating jobs, but he lost the next election to Roosevelt, who also tried to (and succeeded) calm the public down and created government jobs for people. He also created policies that were socialist, almost Communist. He got credit for ending the Great Depression, even though the GD was really ended by Hitler and the global war he started. If it wasn't for Hitler, there wouldn't be a WWII and WWII would never have rescued the American economy. So credit Hitler's insanity and imperialism for saving the economy of one of the nations that helped destroy Hitler's Nazi empire. Ironic how one of the darkest periods of human history did some good.

3. LBJ. Although he's hated for heightening the Veitnam War, people fail to credit him for helping the Civil Rights movement.
