Meh, they ripped off The Honeymooners so it's all good.

Tranzor Z. It's horribly dubbed, and the narration is terribly overacted. That's why it's funny.

I voted for the Simpsons, but I feel that Animaniacs deserves a mention here as well. (Yes, it's nominally a kid's show, but it's the sort of kid's show that an awful lot of adults, myself included, still find pretty darn entertaining.)

I much prefer Japanimation over American made cartoons, but seeing how this thread is about American cartoons, I pick old school Bugs Bunny, American Dad and South Park as good American cartoons.

On the list:
funniest overall: Simpsons
currently the funniest: Family Guy
funny, even when dealing with politics: American Dad. Come on. The Conservative characters are usually god and Islam fearing and Bush worshipping. The Liberal characters are pothead hippies. Comedic gold.
most original art design: South Park. The others are drawn in one piece. South Park is assembled piece by piece, creating a unique look.

Deserves to be on the list: Spongebob Squarepants. Why? It's funny for everyone. Kids love the simple characters, simple plots, and easy-to-understand comedy. Adults love the intelligent double meanings the jokes often have and the fact that the characters are easy to remember and recognize without being loud or annoying.

Wow...someone else who remembers that?

What year is this again? :p

I'll say Ren and Stimpy...the original, NOT the horrible retread they tried releasing on Spike a couple of years ago.

Family Guy tops my list of the modern crop of American 'cartoons'. It just makes me laugh the most.

Going back a wee bit, I was big fan of most of the Saturday morning cartoons; He-man, Transformers, GI-Joe, Smurfs.. hell anything that also happened to be marketed as a toy. THOSE were the days when Saturday morning cartoons were actually good.

Oh, I almost forgot! Spiderman and his Amazing Friends was great. I want an apartment where I can just pull the trophy and my supercomputer and gadgetry all switch away when my venerable aunt walks in the room.

Oh.. and more; Anyone ever a fan of the 'old' Spiderman cartoon? Ever also watch 'Rocket Robin Hood'? Ever notice that they had one episode that was almost exactly the freakin' same?

I love the episode when they become superheroes. International Justice League of Super Acquaintances.

Mermaid Man -- "Sure! Why else would we run around in colored undies?"
Squidward -- "I can think of three good reasons."

Actually, any of the Mermaid Man/Barnacle Boy episodes.

Totally. And I try to be objective about it, but on the occasional Saturday morning when I'm not recovering from a hangover, not working, and happen to be watching tv, I can't help but think what crap Saturday Morning Cartoons are now.

I blame two things; 1) The 'Barney' effect. Since the sucess of the purple dinosaur, half of Saturday morning cartoons seem to be aimed at the very, very young. 2) The rise of japanese animation. Now, I like japanese animation. But the stuff they make for North American consumption is largely garbage, and that is a large part of the modern day S.M.C.

It all makes me happy to know that I lived in an age where I could watch Bravestar, Silverhawks, Thundercats and 'Dungeons and Dragons', instead of the pablum fed to kids nowadays. Sure, we were being brainwashed to buy toys. But they were good toys damnit! And I could get Underoos too!

Those were the good times.

Cable, too, did its job. I mean, how amped can you get for Saturday morning cartoons when there is a whole channel of nothing but cartoons?

Remember the season previews, where they did the show that introduced all the new cartoons this year? "Oh man, they made a cartoon out of the Rubic's Cube?" "Dude, Mr. T has a cartoon now!"

Silverhawks and Thundercats I remember as daily shows, that blessed period between 3pm and 5pm of things like that and G.I. Joe and Transformers and M.A.S.K. that we watched before the syndicated episodes of One Day at a Time and whatever that one show was with the news guy from the Mary Tyler Moore show was a cartoonist who had a comic about a cow came on and you watched them because the other channels were news.

Of course, you're right! The best cartoons were in that immediate after-school time slot. Totally forgot about that. Saturday morning cartoons were still good, but the coolest ones were on after school.

Damn, there was a Rubik's Cube cartoon? Maybe it didn't get any play in the Great White North... And how did Mr.T get saddled with a bunch of lame gymnastic kids anyway? Coudln't he have just 'pitied the foo' while blowing stuff up or something? Probably a part of the era where every cartoon had a 'moral' moment.

Now you know. And knowing's half the battle!

Indeed.

For Christmas my little 6 year old brother got a new generation Transformer, and from the package, it looked really cool.

I opened it up and tried transforming it but it was a complete piece of trash. Unlike my early to mid 90s Transformers, these new ones were made with faulty and cheap plastics, and they were much more complicated, with a lot more parts to them.

All my Transformers are in near perfect condition, even though they've all been played with.

It was really more dissapointing than anything else, because I thought I could get some kind of nostalga high off of seeing by brother playing something just like I had when I was his age, but unfortunatly it wasn't to be.

Not just the Transformers he got, but pretty much all the toys he gets are made from poor materials too, and this comes as the norm now.

Not only are his toys just crappier than mine, he won't even know a world with the higher quality 80s-90s toys I grew up with.

What a shame.

I hear ya. Although the younger generation is growing up with better video games, even if the nintendo/sega era had some kick-ass games (for their time.)

The nostalgia factor is a always a big thing. Don't even get me started on Star Wars!! (Even if I did enjoy the sub-standard prequels... somewhat.)

Oh, another cartoon: Anyone remember a cartoon called 'Blackstar'? For the longest time, I thought maybe I just imagined it, because no one else knew what the hell I was talking about. A few weeks ago, I saw it for sale on DVD.

I really dig the 'buy any tv show on dvd' era. :)

Futurama, by a wide margin. It was made from pure winnage. Unfortunately, I think it was too clever for its own good. To appeal to the masses you have to stick to the tired old formula of 'Look! Homer is being stupid!'
Neo Undelia
29-03-2007, 23:16
Off that list: South Park ftw. I love that pho-serious thing that they do and their political and social messages.
Futurama comes in second for originality. Simpsons is third only because it sucks now.

King of the hill is only occasionally funny; Ren and Stimpy is horrible; Family Guy hasn't been funny in years, and American Dad is completley unappealing.

Not on the list: Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Venture Brothers.
