US 'no longer technology king'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6502725.stm
Seems we've dropped to #7 in the world in technological innovation and application. Denmark is now #1. Not that this is really surprising given the current administrations war on science. What do you think can or should be done (if anything) to reverse this situation?

It's because the American position on technology, like everything else, is "the big corporations have our best interests at heart."
Well, that's what you get when a significant chunk of the population is against evolution, stem-cell research, and global warming. :headbang:

I gotta agree with Rhao on this one.

Bullshit. Singapore is ranked number three and they're a lot closer to full-out unregulated capitalism than we are.
If you're going to blame anything, blame the recent cultural trend against scientists and intelligent people in general.

Most people on this country aren't against global warming. Many don't believe it's real, and I've met some who almost seem to think it's desirable. (well ok, that's a slight exaggeration, but not by much.)

If the US doesnt ban some regulations on advanced research, they are going to drop even faster.

Except the people of America expect the "big corporations to have their best interests at heart" and the government expects the same and doesn't get involved in any "social" programs, you know, like furthering technological advancement and expanse.
the infrastructure available and the extent to which government policy creates a framework necessary for economic development and increased competitiveness.
That is why the US is #7 and will keep dropping unless the next President decides to press matters.
We could just wait two years...I imagine quite a few things will change by 2009.
The comforting thing, though, is that technological progress is still advancing even if the US is falling behind; it would be far worse if there weren't places like Asia and Europe to take the lead when we start to falter. Even so, the US is still a leader in technological innovation, and our contribution to accelerating progress is not to be diminished; one day the vast majority will see that we have not only an economic, but moral duty to enhance ourselves and our civilization through technological progress. Improving the condition of all sapients in our civilization is implicit in scientific progress, and is the basis of our scientific ethics...opposing it is as immoral as it gets without directly harming someone.
Maybe it's time to up funding for DARPA, too...they're capable of getting around the mindless idiocy that this Administration has tried to force upon scientific research, from the nitwit Leon Kass all the way down. Nothing like pursuing advanced research right under the idiot in chief's nose.

That's actually a bit surprising. So much so, including who is on top of the list, that I really didn't have any idea who would be where in any reliable fashion...I shouldn't comment on this.

so I blame American education myself

The state of the American educational system is part of what caused this recent cultural trend in the first place. It's disgraceful and disgusting.
Vetalia: I am a little way about increasing funding for DARPA, but if it helps, it helps.

I'm glad that America is not number one in science as then the U.S is not able to kill as many people with such technology because they are not the best anymore.

These countries are only a very tiny bit apart from each other. I have a feeling that if you were to factor in the US's "top secret" technology it may have a better result.
If we'd just legalize everything and cut taxes and spending, everyone would want to move here, and we'd have more scientists and we'd be #1 again.

Mogadishu is actually turning out to be a shining example of anarcho-capitalism at work. They have internet cafes and everything.

They also have warlords and pirates! (along with nifty things like bone transplants from animals because its all the doctors have)
Needless to say scientist aren’t moving there and Somalia certainly aren’t making any itself

That's what happens when you ban and stifle everything that would foster creativity. I've no sympathy at all.
