I used to play it far too much, but I haven't played at all recently. If this thread makes me addicted again I'm going to be very annoyed at you.

Best times are currently 6 seconds, 35 seconds and 107 seconds, but I've previously managed 4, 24, and about 85. Like I said, I played it far too much.

I refused to play it for the longest time because I misunderstood it. Like a lot of people, I thought that you were just supposed to click around randomly, like Battelship. :p

Once I figured out the logic of it, though, I got quite addicted for awhile. My top scores are... *searches* damn. I've got nothing. All my high scores are on the desktop computer at the house. :(

Let's just say they're good. :)

And let me go on the record to say that solving an entire Expert minefield, save for two spaces that each have an equal chance of containing the last mine, and then choosing the wrong one really, really sucks.

@ Poll. Those are some weird bands.... Under 50? That would be like clearly 10 squares a second. I don't even know anyone who has got that on intermediate, let alone expert.

There wasn't an equal chance... you could have deduced where the mines would be...

In the column next to the empty spaces the numbers went
2
4
4

The 2 already had one mine next to it, the first four had two next to it, and the second four had 3 next to it already. Meaning that they were effectively 1,2,1. Whenever you get 121 in a straight line it means there must be one mine adjacent to each 1, and no mines adjacent to the 2.

Sorry, that was solvable.

_____xx

That is me to a T. Especially the part where I will be very annoyed with the OP :p.

On this computer, my bests are 7, 41, and 90 seconds (can you tell I don't like to do the medium one?).

On my previous computer (i.e. when I still played obsessively) my bests were 5, 26 and 75 (<-- I'm very proud of the 75 ). And yes, I wrote them down. ;p

i even caught myself playing a game of it in my head while i was bored out of my mind in class. When I still played it, I used to play it for hours on end late at night. There were quite a few nights where my brain arranged my dreams in minesweeper fashion - lots of clicking and coloured numbers and stuff. Kinda like when I'm writing uni papers for several days I'll actually end up typing out words in my dreams instead of just saying them. Takes forever, too. :p

I think the fact that I immediately thought, "But there was only one possibility there!" is proof that I've played too many games of Minesweeper...

As for my top score, it appears to be 140 on this computer. (I never play Beginner or Medium.) However, almost all my games of Minesweeper are played while I'm also doing something else, which means most of my scores end up being 999. :p

Minesweeper is terribly addictive. I don't really recall my best scores, but I wasn't too bad. I haven't played in some time. It's just one of those things you do out of sheer boredom, and you find that you just... can't... stop...

I would after a while, say to myself 'Okay, you're actually trying to clear a minefied. If a bomb goes off... that's it. You're done. Here goes...'. This was invariably followed by a 3rd or 4th round explosion. And I would play again anyway.

Minesweeper Reveal Mines
With your cursor inside the minesweeper window type "XYZZY" then press Shift-Enter and Enter. A white dot should appear in the upper-left corner of the screen. If it turns black, your cursor is resting on a mine.

Note: This trick works best if your Windows background is black. Also note that code will not work in Windows 95 or Windows NT.

It's not fuckin' working!

If you right click a flag appears. One is taken off your mine counter, and you can't left click on that square until you right click on it again.

Marking mines is worthwhile because if you think you have correctly marked all the mines around a square then you can shift left click the middle square and all the surrounding squares will be revealed (you lose if you incorrectly mark where the mines are, but it only reveals the surrounding squares if you have the right number of flags surrounding the square. ie. it will not reveal any squares if you have 2 flags next to a 1 square, or only 1 flag next to a 2 square.

You'll find this makes minesweeper a lot easier to play.

Interesting puzzle I just got. See if you can correctly mark where the mines are.

x = mine
[space] = empty
The free spaces (with numbers) and mines are in the code in white. So highlight a space if you think you know if it's free or not to find out if you're right.

Mainly because most of my time is spent pressing the shift key down. Because shift right click still marks a mine in the same way. You only need to stop pressing shift if you've come to a tricky part and you have to individually click where a mine isn't in the hopes that it will give you enough infomation to find where the mines are.

You people are confusing me. You play Minesweeper with shift keys? or any keys really? Buh?
And I never even noticed what Infinite Dunes said about when the surrounding squares get revealed - I only knew that sometimes there will be big swaths that will be revealed, sometimes only a couple squares.
And I only play with the mouse. I only learned about the time-saving way of pressing both mouse keys simultaneously in some situations from a Minesweeper Highscores website once (where the highscores will make you cry) and I was unable to get my fingers used to that.

Of course, I suck at both logics and tactical thinking and I practically never play any kind of computer games and if I do, I suck at them. Badly.

Except Minesweeper and the Jumping Bunny one, apparently. Meh.

Awww. Poor WYTYG. Using both mouse buttons simultaneously isn't that difficult - if you're only using the mouse anyway, you'll have your fingers poised over both buttons as it is. Then it's just a matter of co-ordination...
