Cyberbullying

Apparently, cyberbullying is a horrible plague on society. And flaming people on the internet can destroy their lives and make them depressed shells of their former selves.

Now, I don't know about you guys, but I was not aware of this fact.

Ending the sarcasm bit, these stories are either about people who are way to sensitive, already had a massive amount of problems, or exagerrating. There's stories about people be called "fat" by someone on the internet, and then becoming Anorexic for 2 years. Now, I don't know about you guys, but being called fat is not enough to push a normal person to anorexia.

I'm fine with people saying cyberbullying is bad. But I am not fine with them finding these worst-case scenarios and acting like they're the norm. It's like saying if don't ban guns 6 year olds are going to shoot each other, if we legalize drugs everyone will be killed and robbed by junkies, and if we don't have strict regulations on the use of heat everyone will be slaughtered by Miss O'Leary's Cow.

THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS BUSINESS and everything said by a completely anonymous person should be not only listened to but taken at face value!

Or, not. A good protip is to remember that you can just not read the thread or comment, or block them, or just get off the internet for a while. I mean, the internet's so big that I think you can find something else to look at or join to avoid the assholes out there.

cyber bullying is the mildest possible form of bullying. if you cant handle someone online calling you fat, you arent ready to exist in the world.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I don't know why everyone has to latch on to worst- case circumstances.

People are assholes in real- life, why would it be different online? You fail at life if you can't handle internet sarcasm.

EDIT: Not that bullying should ever be done, in real life or via the blagoblag, but it's just pure laziness, isn't it?

In my day, a step out of line like that got you a beating with the cybercane, I don't know what the world is coming to, that any young whippersnapper can yell 'n00b' and get away with it. We showed proper respect in the good old days and none of this 'stoopid' nonsense, we spelled it 'stupid' and were glad for the opportunity to spell, not like you crazy folk that bandy it around like it's going out of fashion. and let me tell you something else, no one used these newfangled acronyms, we invented proper words and relished every bit of them.

But you also demanded "Reverend" be added to the front of your name on the early sites when you became a reverend of the Universal Life Church.

Has anyone else realized that the Universal Life Church probably has more ministers then average members?

actually if people are affected in real life with bullying, and then they shelter at home trying to get pass through and go online only to be picked on again, that might activate the desire for suicide on unstable and deeply depressed people

if they try to run from real life, only to have the same treatment on virtual life, how would they feel? no social life kills...

Cyberbulling is SO not serious. I mean, wow, somebody calls you "a fatt st00pid noobsandwich" and all of a sudden it's the worst insult ever uttered!

Yeah, people are jerks on the internet- look at October3/Monkey Nipples/HunterST. People are rude and virtiolic and sometimes flat out retarded. That's how it is in real life too. What's worse, a random person coming up to you on the street and calling you a fat piece of crap, or a faceless cyber-entity callign you a fat piece of crap?

My point is, people should be more focused on RL-bullying. I was bullied from age seven to the end of my eighth grade year in RL, and the internet was my only solace other than band or writing. I've encountered these "cyber-bullies"-- and they haven't hurt me nearly as much as the real-life bullies.

Some people just hate the internet, it seems.

Not necessarily. The internet is huge, and there are much more nice people than arses than in real life, it seems. I've been RL-bullied and cyber0bullied, but the RL-bullying has actually left a mark.

NAS, yes it could mean those things, but that is also known as being a dick/stalker/fucktard or any other dorrogitory (anyone know where the spell check button is?) word. Cyber bullying is not as serious as RL bullying, I believe that is the consensus here. Real life bullying is a problem, but people want to incriminate the internet in an attempt to make the internet look bad.

I think you guys are missing the point a little.... all of the cyber bullying cases I have ever seen on the news here in Australia are not about people calling each other 'noob'. The concern is when children are being bullied at school, and the bully continues to bully them via emails and blog sites when they get home. I think this is generally what is considered to be internet bullying, rather than random strangers call you a noob or stoopid (and who can take spelling like that seriously anyway). And yes, I believe that this form of internet bullying is just as serious as that which occurs in the school yard, as it is an extension of that bullying.

Guess what an easy way to prevent cyber bullying is? Play video games online with people YOU DON'T KNOW. Thus when they are making fun of you it is more of a joke and much less serious as normally online it is saying nub / n00b / newb / nubcake or any other variant of that word.

aye, i'm glad i left primary school (where i was bullied) before internet really caught on like it has with the chat and whatever. the kids that bullied me used to prank call my home all the time and leave threatening messages on the answerphone and that was bad enough, i can imagine it would have been worse if they were on the internet too. although i'd have thought the best way of not getting bullyed by RL bullies on the internet is to not give the bullies your internet details. my parents got our phonenumber changed and went exdirectory and that solved the phonecalls.

You can SMURF an IP if you happen to be using a router to share 4 coms on a single line. Very annoying really. I've tried jumping around on my IP, but the same guy keeps finding it. I've got a fix on his IP, so I'm thinking of putting together something nasty and sending it back.
