Agree on a plan to withdraw by a date certain, but make the date Top Secret.

Only the President and the Senate and House (certain members only) would know.

The President could submit a Top Secret plan.

That way, the argument that "the terrorists would know the date, and make their plans around it" would be out the window.

And at the very least, there would be a plan.

Sounds fine to me, so long as that date is reasonably close, say sometime this year or early next year. Frankly I don't see why they'd do it any other way.

you mean it would be top secret untill some drunk politician becomes an "confidential source" and the date and plan are leaked to the Washington Post.

but we all know that those guys in capitol hill know how to keep secrets... right?

Would there be pool where the terrorists could make a guess at the withdrawal date and if they get it they get a free shot at the Green Zone?

"July 23rd?"
"Nope. Next!"
"Hmm, August 16th?"
"NNNGGG! Next!"
"December 3rd?"
*whispers* "....crap....."

Think of the money you could make.

"Say, Ahmed? What's the line on the withdrawal down at Vegas this morning?"

and realize that "benefits" could be anything to anyone.

"What's in it for me?"
"a chocolate chip cookie?"

Anyway, I think it's a dumb idea, mostly because I've always thought the argument that we can't let the Iraqis know when we're leaving was stupid as well. The "terrorists" in Iraq are so tied in with the Iraqi government that they'll know the US is pulling out before the US public does.

Nah, Sandy Berger would steal it from the National Archives and forget which dumpster he hid it under, after leaving the building.

We could always just put it in a lock box and only give the key to Al Gore.
