In what is becoming a trend among conservative Christians in the United States, girls as young as nine are pledging to their fathers to remain virgins until they wed, in elaborate ceremonies dubbed "Purity Balls."

Personally, I think it's a pretty idiotic practice.

would you say the same if it's people pledging to not smoke or drink alcohol or to donate money or volunteer to help a charity/organization?

Why is it idiotic?

Sorry. It wasn't a post-and-run I just got caught up in another thread.

I think it's idiotic because it's a group of parents forcing impressionable nine year olds with no understanding of sex or really much of anything to take essentially meaningless vows, if the pregnancy rates of the girls who take these vows are any indication.

All it does is force them to be secretive about it, to have no understanding of it at ages when children are likely to start becoming active, and they end up with an STD or pregnant.

And it's also unnecessary pomp and show for it.

Edit: It was an active attempt to prevent the Modhammer from coming down unnecessarily.

There is a growing tendency to use "shock titles" when creating threads. Bear in mind that titles appear on the sidebar of the nation pages, which are displayed in our classroom regions to young students (and their teachers!). These sorts of titles are unacceptable to that audience.

Titles which use offensive language, concepts, or pretty much anything that George Carlin might say will be edited. If it's done maliciously or repetitively, thread originators may expect the usual range of forum punishments, up to and including deletion of nations.

The standard for titles is not PG-13, but rather PG or even G.

It's not that. It's the software designed to prevent all the ridiculous pop ups and other absurd infiltrations that these things do. It's so hard to prevent seeing porn on the internet that many of these softwares go far to the other side to err on the side of caution. Why is this such a big deal? It's not like people are actively disapproving of the word. It's just preventing the filters from blocking NS.

Back on topic, these balls are sickening. The pledge is made to the CHILD's father at a time when the CHILD does not really understand what she's pledging. It supports the idea that a woman's chastity belongs to her father. And even some of the t-shirt's suggest such a thing. It's not a touching ceremony between father and daughter, it's a way to perpetuate a rather outdated idea of sex and to create a situation that subjugates the idea of simply having an open relationship with your teenager about their sexuality. There's a reason they are doing it before the kid knows enough to ask questions.

I personally don't believe that the practice of deciding not to have sex until marriage is idiotic. However, having a ball for 9 year olds for that purpose is pretty ridiculous. I don't see anything idiotic about promising to abstain from sex until after marriage to oneself, God, etc. if that is someone's personal religious belief. Just my opinion, but it doesn't seem fair to criticize or make fun of something that some people do find important to their own identity, as it's not an offensive concept.

Though, these girls are members of fundie families, so perhaps it's not a good idea at all.

This may surprise you, but the article is not my only source. I've actually heard of this before and they actually encourage this to be done at a very young age. It's more a show of what a good Christian family you are than anything else. It's silly and more than a bit disturbing.

while i have no problem with the decision to wait until after marriage for sex (well i think its a bad decision but its certainly up to the individual) i think that these public pledges of virginity are a bad idea for a number of reasons.

ones virginity isnt one's parents' to guard. your virginity is yours and when you decide to give it up, your parents wont be there.

its a bad standard that amounts to pure or soiled, virgin or whore. it gives you no guidance whatsoever for the harder task which is deciding when to have sex AGAIN, who to have it with and how to conduct yourself as a non-virgin.

after all, we are only virgins until we are not, then we spend the rest of our lives as non virgins. we need to learn sexual integrity, not just purity. givng a teen the impression that its virgin or slut means that when they are not a virgin, they may as well be a slut. not a good decision.

it gives a teen all the more reason to lie to her parents about her sexual experience. its hard enough to ask for birth control, treatment for an STD or tell your parents that you are pregnant but if their image of you is one of complete purity, you may never be able to talk to them. knowing their deep disappointment may be too much to bear.

I have not had any elaborate pledging ceremonies with my folks, but as a Christian guy, I am waiting until I get married. I do not consider myself to be a religious extremist or anything, and I am certainly not very conservative (Politically). My main reason is that it is a sign of devotion to my future wife; a way of showing that she will be my one and only. We promise to be faithful when exchanging marriage vows, and I figure it ought to hold for before the marriage as well.

Besides that, I just think it is wise to keep myself for that lucky girl, whoever she may be. Providing she does the same (Or at least uses the proper protection), it should significantly lower my STD risk. That has been a concern for my more active friends, and I am quite glad not to have that added stress in my life. In the same vein, I will not have to worry about impregnating anyone, which is otherwise a bit of a family tradition (Although I always remember how long my parents have been hitched, since it is just a few- far fewer than nine- months ahed of my own age).

Do not take me for a prude. As I see it, once I do get married, I will have to make up for lost time. I look forward to a very busy honeymoon.

I AM PROUD TO BE..NOT A VIRGIN

This is unfortunately almost an ridiculous expectation. If these girls have any normal social life (given their parents, they may not) they will probably lose their virginity at 16 with the average statistic of today, or even younger.

In my experience it was often the preacher or rabbi's daughters and sons that was the wildest, in several examples, which shows just enforcing moral rules does not work at all, and sometimes causes the opposite effect.

Often these chastity balls and such religious puritism often cover up deeper family secrets such as molestation and abuse, which statistics have shown occurs actually sometimes more often in overly religious families behind closed doors. Imagine the confusion for the child if she is going through such abuse, and then told that sex is bad and has all these religious events.

I have two thoughts about this:
1. It seems a little wrong that a father should take such an interest in his daughter's sexuality.

A variety of people who will generally have their own styles and will generally add a little bit of education to add to your repetoire of sexual tricks. I have two thoughts about this:
1. It seems a little wrong that a father should take such an interest in his daughter's sexuality.
2. This is enforcing the biblical notion that women are always owned by men. First by their fathers, then by their husbands.

I don't know that it's their sexuality per se that they're interested in; at least I hope not.

As a man who at least one day, circumstances and fortune providing, will be the father of a girl, I can understand the general feeling that you are the most important man in this little person's life. She depends on you, she looks up to you, she models what she wants and expects in life on you. That's a pretty heady feeling to have, and I can understand the deep-seated desire to keep that position. Keep it even in the face of the fact that she wants some other guy to take the position of "most important man in her life" away from you.

Understand, but not accept. It's a hard thing to give up a child and let him or her become her own person, but that ultimately is the purpose of parenthood: to bring a child to a state where they don't need you any more; where they act for the sake of that which they hold dear, not what you do. They may still (and hopefully do) want you in their life, but they do so of their own volition, not yours. That I think is what disturbs me about this trend the most: one of the crucial components of teaching a child how to be an adult is to, if not directly teach, then at least allow and help them to become fully-fledged human beings, sexuality included. This kind of purity fetish, successful or no, completely undercuts this purpose. Even if you win, your child has lost because she hasn't learned anything other than to act morally for Daddy's sake, not because she has her own code of honor and lives for the sake of it.

I have other issues with it: the assumption of sex equating with evil, the practicality of the matter (seriously, if I'm going to get a secure job, I'll have to train for it until I'm about 25 to 30, and you cannot tell me that God wants me to be sexually pure till I'm older than Romeo and Juliet's parents), the reduction of women to the status of objects, etc. But this I think is the real kicker, in that even if this works, it does so only at the price of creating the fully capable, fully human, and fully adult person that parenthood is supposed to create.

that sort of thing worked much better when girls reached menarche at 14-16 and got married between 16 and 20. (and similar for boys) in todays world where its not unusual for a girl to have her first period at age 9 and not get married until well older than 25, its a bit unrealistic to expect her to be a virgin on her wedding night or that if she manages it that she have enough of a sex drive to satisfy her husbands needs.

Exactly my point. A good husband is supposed to (note: I'm not trying to draw feminist critiques at this point, so just roll with me here) secure the material means of subsistence for his family. Sexual onset occurs occurs around 15; the time when I can reasonably help support a family comes 15 years later. You cannot square the circle in this set of facts: either I'm supposed to be deeply unhappy and frustrated for 15 years as part of God's plan, which I would only believe if I believed in an unjust God, I'm supposed to believe that our current economic system is deeply unnatural, which for different reasons I'll provisionally agree with but those who are rooting for this purity movement absolutely will not, or I'm supposed to believe that the connections between sex and marriage are subject to change when our abilities to engage in sex and marriage change. Given that triangle of options, I'll take the third option as being the most accurate.

Yeah, that was my thought too. Imagine the reverse.

Son: And I pledge to you, mom, that I will remain chaste and pure.

Mom: And to you, my son, I pledge that I shall not cheat on your father, or view the pornography, or otherwise engage in immoral sexual behaviour.

Both: We are sexually pure.

Ewwwwwwww. But no, the boys probably just get ben-gay rubbed on their hands when caught masturbating.

I like it when other people post my thoughts for me. :p

This is why you will have more 18 year olds getting married, and a rise in devorces.

Sounds about right to me.

As I said, there are statistics and studies that what happens behind closed doors in such extremist conservative families or where this kind of stuff goes on is bad. Like abuse and molestation. On one hand the girl is taught sex is bad and everything about sex is bad, then she is being molested by a family member but because of the "dirty shame" aspect she does not report it.

These kind of ceremonies enforce the idea that a girl's chastity belongs to her father, and is very creepy.

The first GOOGLED page http://generationsoflight.myicontrol.com/generationsoflight/html/PurityBall.html is very creepy if you look at it.

The recommended "pledge" in question on the #1 hit site for "Purity Ball" on search engine:

I, (DAUGHTER'S NAME)'S FATHER, CHOOSE BEFORE GOD TO COVER MY DAUGHTER AS HER AUTHORITY AND PROTECTION IN THE AREA OF PURITY. I WILL BE PURE IN MY OWN LIFE AS A MAN, HUSBAND AND FATHER. I WILL BE A MAN OF INTEGRITY AND ACCOUNTABLITY AS I LEAD, GUIDE AND PRAY OVER MY DAUGHTER AND MY FAMILY AS THE HIGH PRIEST IN MY HOME. THIS COVERING WILL BE USED BY GOD TO INFLUENCE GENERATIONS TO COME.

Personally, I think it's a pretty idiotic practice.

Your thoughts?
"Idiotic" doesn't go far enough, in my opinion.

Little girls give their "purity" into the keeping of their fathers, who then pass said "purity" on to whichever man ends up buying...excuse me, marrying her some day in the future.

Eeew.

On so many levels, eeeeeeew.

1) That one's hymen is the defining aspect of one's self. One is "pure" if one still has a hymen. One is "impure" without one. A serial killer with an intact hymen would, presumably, be a more desirable bride than a model citizen who has had Teh Sex.

2) Girls are supposed to want to marry the kind of creepy fucker who would refuse to marry a girl unless he'll get to rip through a membrane and cause her pain and bleeding on their wedding night. Um, eew.

3) Girls are supposed to hand over their sexual decision-making powers to Daddy. Millions of gallons of EEEEEW. I love my dad and all, but the idea of him deciding who and when I fuck is just too damn creepy.

4) All the lock-and-key shit that they get into at these purity balls is waaaaaay to Freudian. Girl wears the "lock", and gives the "key" to her Daddy to hold on to, until it's time to let her future husband stick the "key" into her "lock." Given what the "key" clearly symbolizes, how deeply disturbing is it for "Daddy" to be hanging onto his "key" while thinking about his daughter's "purity" all those years? Yeesh.

Try imagining the gender reversal of the Daddy-hands-daughter's-"purity"-to-husband thing, too.

"I, [NAME], pledge to guard my son's purity and protect it until such time as his wife claims it for her own."

Of course, you'd have to reverse the lock-and-key symbolism, since Mommy would be holding on to his "key" for him instead...

I'm aromantic as well as asexual...I'm not romantically attracted to people, either, so I probably wouldn't fall in love. Although if I ever did, I might marry them if they didn't demand sex. In fact, the idea of abstinence is rather silly.

Yes, you choose who you want to have sex with. And you do pass up quite a few - which might mean that you're not having sex until you feel you've found someone who will make it worthwhile.

But not because you chose "as a Christian". You choose for yourself.

No, I don't have the ability to change it. That's what I'm saying. It wouldn't happen because I'm aromantic and I can't change it. It could change on it's own, I suppose, but I think it's more likely that it'll stay the same. What always amazes me is that Paul took a religion descended from a religion that didn't really treat sex as something you should be completely ignorant about and pushed it into the closet. I don't remember Jesus ever saying that sex is dirty or that understanding it is bad. However, people are welcome to quote him.

As to the virginity thing, as has been pointed out before, when it was common for "men" and "women" to marry almost the moment they hit puberty saying that you should wait for marriage isn't that weird. Now when by the time people marry they would have been desiring sex for half their life and be expected to not have sex, sex play or masturbation, how could anyone possibly think that would be healthy?

What I'm curious about is if all these little boys are not masturbating or having sex, are they being taught why they're regularly waking up coated in fluid? Oh, wait, right, boys don't have to be pure.

He's rather successful, so I suppose it is.

Yeah, success has always been a good way to measure quality.

if girls were "good" while in high school they seem to not continue with that "goodness" when they leave home and go to college. it seems freedom is a powerfull aphrodisiac.

Well, look at Andrew Dice Clay. If that's not an amazing sense of quality I don't know what is.

You kick ass.
Yes, yes I do.
I only support chastity if it's kinky.

See, if you encourage your daughter to remain a virgin you'll have people like Neesika coming after them!

Ron White is a standup comedian.

As usual, when he was in Alaska on tour, he joked that the audience was pretty ugly.

They took it as a personal insult, and some leader within the Inuit wrote him a nastygram, saying that the Inuit are some of the "most racially pure" people on the planet. Ron said, "well, that makes sense, because they're so ugly looking no one wants to..."

The letter further stated that the Inuit are in a population decline, and Ron added, "and I guess we know that means that now they're so ugly, they won't even have sex with each other..."

And what the hell does this have to do with my original comment which was:

"Creepy. Seriously creepy."

Are you that desperate to get my attention?

Clearly, the height of comedy.

No, it's actually the height of irrelevancy.

That was Ron's description of the people in the audience.
