Anyone "actually" making money from home?

I recently retired from the Marine Corps, and was wondering if anyone knows of a good home based business that isn't a scam, and isn't involved with selling stuff that no one wants? Only need about a grand a month extra, so any ideas are welcome.

Home based businesses can be very profitable.... IF your locality isn't already saturated with them. *nod*

I'm not a retired marine, hell, I'm not even a marine. But you could start your own business. Just don't take a loan from the bank they'll get you to pay more than you started with...I think that if you were a marine, who did it long enough, did the job well and got it done, then the corp. should help pay for retirement.

At the moment, my health situation is such that I'm pretty much stuck doing most of my work from home whether I like it or not (of which I pick "not"). I do website design/maintenance - it's tedious, my clients make me want to beat my head against a wall on a regular basis, and the pay is utter crap, but I can do it from my bed when I need to. I don't recommend it as a career, but if you really need to work from home, it's better than starving.

At some point, I may get back into tutoring - if you're clever and good at explaining things, it's not a bad way to bring in a little extra money from home.

:( That sucks.

I'm surprised you don't make more doing web design. The company that did our web- design/ maintence was flat out raping my company before I came along. $20K for initial design, $2K every month for maintence (excluding hosting fees).

Do you have computer skills?

Maybe look for a factory job as well. Not all of them sucked. I worked for a short time at Voith Paper Rolls. It was one of the best jobs I held. I was working with my hands, it required a degree of skill so the place wasn't filled with glue- sniffing burn-outs.

Maybe look at screen-printing/ emroidery.

ONLY a grand a month?!?!? I'm disabled and that is just about my entire monthly income.

If you don't want to deal with the public in person sell on e-bay. People will buy anything and pay through the nose for it.

I recently retired from the Marine Corps, and was wondering if anyone knows of a good home based business that isn't a scam, and isn't involved with selling stuff that no one wants? Only need about a grand a month extra, so any ideas are welcome.

Two words: Affiliate marketing. You will need to pick up some computer skill (but nothing major...you don't have to program, just be able to get a website up, which isn't hard to learn at least compared to programming)--and you do need to know how to sell stuff.

But, the kind of "stuff" sold is pretty much anything you can think of. Amazon.com's got a huge affiliate program (although it is NOT the most lucrative one, it's a biggie and can give a basic idea of how "mainstream" affiliate marketing works). Lots of retailers have affiliate programs; some of them have stuff that sells well, others can't sell ice in the Sahara...same as with bricks-n-mortar stores.

Becoming an affiliate is cheap: The price of a domain name, and if you want to use a program to make site-making dirt easy, then there's the cost of that. LEGIT affiliate programs are free to sign up for. Avoid any programs that charge!!

And, you're not too much of a n00b to get accepted to some programs. Once you get a fairly decent site put together, many will accept your application.

You can also sell stuff online as a merchant, but that's more risky because then you have to buy stock. As an affiliate, if something doesn't sell, you aren't stuck with any stock...just sign up for some other program and promote their stuff instead.

If you don't want to bother learning much computer stuff, you can hire the programming part done. And it's standard to use a "shopping cart" that someone else programmed, and just customize it.

I do both affiliate-side and merchantside selling, and the potential is FAR more than $1k/month (not guaranteed that you will make that or even 1c, but it's possible to make a shedload)--although it does take several months, at least, to ramp up. I've bought a car and some land from my earnings, along with totally avoiding employment (working for someone else) for 7 years now.

I could go on and on, and on, but I'll refrain from putting all of NSG to sleep. Here's a network that's popular on the big affiliate marketing forum (because they're the most ethical one):
www.shareasale.com

Scroll down to where it says "affiliates" and they give a good quickie overview. Except they mention email lists, which gives a wrong impression...most legit affiliate marketing is done via websites afaik.

My parents sell trees and tools for bonsai on ebay. But you need to be willing to put up with compulsive hobbyists and total n00bs (fyi, it's pronounced 'BONE-sigh'. BAN-Zai is an exclamation.) And you need to understand when it's safe to ship tropicals and what will grow where... Only a business for those who like trees, I think

If they told you that, you wouldn't need to buy several books from them on the subject.
Also, let's face it, if it really was 'guaranteed' to work then there'd be 100s of thousands of millionaires out there working from home.

Last time I checked, there weren't. Just a few intensely irritating grinning idiots on TV telling me how I can become rich if I send them all my money.
Now, I don't have had much to do with economics (was forced to do it as part of my business degree and promptly tried to forget it asap), but for the life of me I can't help but feel there's something wrong with that scenario.

Build websites. You can work with what you just have. and you can learn ANYTHING about HTML and XML on www.w3.org , if you don't know about it. And you clearly already own the equipement needed, that is, a computer and the internet.

I can't believe that the forces did not offer you some training before unleashing you onto civilian society! My friends husband was 22 years in the Royal Navy and they gave him training before he was due to decommission and also provided help looking for work and he is now working as an electrician, which is a good income on top of his pension. He went in at 16, so is still a young enough guy to need to earn extra to his pension, also he has two boys.

I wish you luck with your task, I am sure that you will get used to civilians, we are not all idiots you know. :)

How many languages do you speak? You could be a qualified translator and not know it yet - and there's always a need for writers, esp. with military experience. SoF is always recruiting ex-Marines, for instance.

I retired from the IRR a few years ago, so I don't get the money for a few more years. I have a couple hobbies that can be pretty good businesses -- cabinet and furniture making, but that's not for everyone. What I'd recommend is looking into things that you enjoy doing, that also might be worth something to another.
