Depends on the song. I find Snow Patrol's latest single boring, but I don't mind a couple of their other tunes.

Of course it's not just you! These bands are the spawn of Satan! Their faux-sincere back-of -a-postcard 'emotional' lyrics, the dull, dull chord sequences, the forgettable melodies... actually Coldplay write a half-decent piece of music every now and then, but Snow Patrol... awful! "Oooh, let's take the oldest chord sequence in rock, get the guitarist to do a bad impression of the Edge, and then I'll sing about my feelings!" Well guess what, Gary my lad, your feelings are LAME.
,
Your name is made of win.
Snow Patrol's second album was fantastic. Full of energy in some parts, and almost weary at other, sucking the listener in. And Gary Lightbody's vocals and lyrics along with the music were so many things at once. Brilliant album.

I actually quite like When It's All Over... not the best album ever, but certainly an interesting and distinctive listen. My rant was more about their commercial stuff, that's just lame.

yeh, i agree, although snow patrol were so much... i hesitate to use the word but... edgier before they released 'final straw'.
I think such music has its place, mostly as background or driving music. I think Coldplay's first album was pretty great, certainly less bland than later efforts, and I think they're music better than the bands they have inspired. Incidentally, both Athlete and Snow Patrol have both changed their sound significantly, and seen commercial success because of it. Bands know it sells, so we're going to see much more of it.
It's better than James Blunt, I suppose.

Ah ok.
Final Straw had some great songs on it, but you're right; Eyes Open is a bit boring.

It can be incredibly tedious, however, "Run" is a beautiful song, and though I fear the genre is now a little tired, some gems still exist.
Nonetheless, its still more palattable than rap.

You'd have to check this, but I think one of the songwriters left the band after Final Straw, leaving just Lightbody. This may explain the relative homogenity (is that a word? is now) of Eyes Open. I don't have either album, though, just the second one, though I've heard the latest two played through.

there's the word you want. and you're probably right about their second song writer leaving. no idea why he left but it does seem that they've stuck with the droney anthemic sound off final straw but without any interesting bits to redeem them.

I love Snow Patrol from When It's All Over We Still Have To Clear Up to Eyes Open - especially Set The Fire To The Third Bar with the phenomenal Martha Wainwright.
#And miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold gound.
I pray that something picks me up,
And sets me down in your warm arms.#
Both Athlete albums are great as well. Half Light is immense.
#So when I see you next we'll make the most of it,
Tell the sun to start moving again.
The taste of your kiss I've still got on my lips,
And I'll take you there with me#

I saw SP and MW doing that song on Jools Holland. I couldn't stop laughing. Gary and Martha both had their eyes closed, and they were just reciting total dreck (see above) to the crappiest, most monotonous tune I've ever heard. They looked so serious. Damn near pissed myself.

They were on Later... several months back, and they were shocking. Singer can't sing (not necessarily a terrible thing - see the Dresden Dolls, for example), guitarist can't play, band can't write a decent song.

heh! nothing like a shitty live performance to ruin a band. there was a band a few years ago, i think they were called the open, and i really liked one of their songs i'd heard on the radio. then i saw them live and they were pants. just totally uninspiring. completely lost interest after that.
The reason I don't like the Fratiellis is the sheer fakeness around them. They're old (for a rock band), and scottish, but they appear to have got around these things by ripping off the Libertines. They even sing with cockney accents. They can write half-decent tunes, and in the recording studio it might even sound half-decent. But that's hardly enough when none of the ideas were yours in the first place.

No, you are not. Neo Undelia's post pretty much sums up my perception - it all sounds like the same drivel to me. Boring monotonous, barely differentiated. I generally speaking completely fail to notice when one Coldplay (for instance) song leaves the chart and another enters. It just seems to me like the same never-ending song.
Honestly, this shit would put my dear old grandmother to sleep.

Yeah, but none of the band mentioned by the OP are random teen bands with nonsensical lyrics and semicatchy beats.

Supposedly describes a fusion between metal and hardcore punk. As you'd expect, that's pretty broad and irrelevant since you can put most of the artists associated with it into other categories anyway and have very little in common with eachother. I've seen it applied to Mastodon, Converge, Hatebreed, etc.

The Fray? God, please, no. I don't know about Snow Patrol, but I've listened to enough random Indie crap to make snap judgements fairly accurately. If I'm wrong about them, please tell me. I'll read some lyrics and gauge for myself.

Ah, Chris. It's not about how original your musical taste is and never has been. Originality doesn't make a great band, just as much as popularity doesn't destroy them. Thou shalt not hate a band for being popular :p
Being non-conformist by spouting about originality is as old as the hills. Just feel free to like whatever you want to and to hell with judging people on their musical preferences.

Ok...
Right...I'm fine with yet another pointless genre being invented to try and fit it to some bands. I mean, come on, I'm a big fan of 'post-rock'.
I can even see why Converge (and to a lesser extent, Hatebreed) might have been tarnished with this (stupid) brush.
But since when...and I really am having trouble understanding this...since when have Mastodon (Mastodon!) fused hardcore punk with anything?
But since when...and I really am having trouble understanding this...since when have Mastodon (Mastodon!) fused hardcore punk with anything?
Well, it's come to be the new "nu-metal". But there's definitely a hardcore influence in Mastodon...it's all over their guitarwork. See? (http://rapidshare.com/files/23152018/mastodon.mp3.html) First example I bothered pulling up, there's probably better ones...that'd be a pretty easy riff to "punk-ify" though. Another one. (http://rapidshare.com/files/23153184/mastodon2.mp3.html)
(But then, that doesn't mean anything - a huge amount of metal bands, probably even the majority, since the 1980s have drawn upon influences from hardcore....looooooong before "metalcore" was a term.)
