Today is the annual Swedish Waffle Day (Våffeldagen). Logically, it's a day for stuffing your face with waffles. It has an interesting history, seeing as it had nothing to do with waffles from the beginning. Instead the day is actually "Jungfru Marie bebådelsedag" which is translated as "The Virgin Mary's Annunciation Day" and is celebrated roughly nine months before Christmas as it is assumed that that's when the myth of the angel impregnating Mary took place.

It just happened that another name for it was "vårfrudagen" ("The day of our lady" or "The day of the lady of spring"), but it was corrupted by plebeian language misunderstandings into "våffeldagen", meaning "waffle day".

I'm making waffles as I type, and am thinking that I should spread the incentive to gorge beyond our borders. :)

Neat! A shame I have no waffles in the house, or else I would partake. Probably just as well...any waffles we'd have would pale in comparison to genuine Sweedish waffles.

wish you'd posted this earlier. My g/f bought a waffle-maker recently and this would have been a great excuse to pull it out (the waffle-maker, I mean) and use it.
Now it's nighttime here, and I've just gorged myself with vegetarian pizza and Falafels.
Please remind us the day before Våffeldagen next year.

They're versatile like crêpes that way. My favourite "stuffing" (they go on the waffles, but whatever) are chanterelles that have been thrown around in some butter over a flame and also a type of texmex/taco-like stuffing with Mexican spices, quorn and, well, whatever you can think to put in a taco.

If you make the waffles correctly they end up being "frasiga" as we say. My dictionary tells me it's translated as "crisp" and I guess that's a good approximation. Regular bread that's been made into a larger type of crouton tends to also be crisp, but also hard, while the waffles are crisp and soft at the same time.

If you make the waffles correctly they end up being "frasiga" as we say. My dictionary tells me it's translated as "crisp" and I guess that's a good approximation. Regular bread that's been made into a larger type of crouton tends to also be crisp, but also hard, while the waffles are crisp and soft at the same time.

i shall have to trie that during the holliday.

You seem like quite the cook, Fassigen. May we all benefit from your cooking wisdom.

Going to chef school was an idea I entertained seriously before I went into medicine, thinking I could live with being an amateur in the former, but not the latter.

Waffles are overrated. I rarely eat'em, maybe once or twice a year.

I prefer pancakes or sandwiches done in a sandwichmaker, which is what I got when I moved out. Way more useful.

Aye, aye. But you could always go to cooking school at some point down the road. It might be worth a shot if you have the time and are still interested in a few years or so.

Yeah, but they also have signs they have posted everywhere; "Please use napkins."

Happy Waffle Day!

Why, thank you, and likewise! ... I've actually been thinking of this, and you, at some point earlier today. Long train rides do funny things to people.
Sorry for having been a stranger these days - life's keeping me busier than I would have dreamt it could only weeks ago.

Hah, I've been commuting by train to the town I used to live in this last week and I thought of you too at some point. Koinkidinki.

Don't worry about it. I understand. Hope it's all fun!

Oh, it's been kind of meh. Primary care is calm and lulling. Funny thing, though, and probably the reason I thought about you on the train, is that the three male doctors that work at the primary health care centre are all German. And they all have the cutest accents. Bliss! Although with that Swiss anti-German thread, I am starting to think they're on to something. ;)

yum! waffles are good :D. what do you put on waffles in sweden?

I'm expressly referring to the waffle, which is optimally moulded to hold toppings in ample quantity, as opposed to the otherwise formless ellipse that is the standard pancake.
