Seems the US isn't the only nation being over run by hordes of rampaging immigrants taking jobs, lowering wages, stealing the women folk, and generally being obnoxious. No, Switzerland is in the midst of an immigration crisis. Where are these filthy immigrants coming from? Africa? Nope. The middle east? Guess again. No, the unwashed masses are streaming across the border from the Fatherland. Yes, the Swiss are being drowned in a sea of Aryan immigrants. One wonders how the anti-immigration (read anti-brown immigration) folks are going to try spin this one so that it's ok for Blond/Blue Europeans to "invade" another nation, but not anyone else. :D

I've read the article twice and cannot think where you've got the "anti-brown" bit from. From what I can see, the Swiss' stereotype of Germans is one of 'cheap workers, arrogant expressions and objectionable self-confidence'.

You see, it's because a lot of "anti-immigration" parties in Europe use pathetic reasoning to object to immigration such as, "They'll steal our jobs", "They won't assimilate", "They'll cause religious and ethnic tensions", but those same parties such as the British National Party and the Danish Peoples Party are often headed by people who are found to be vehement racists.

Oh, the excuse will be that Germans don't NEED to "assimilate," since they already have so much in common with Swiss culture.

(Of course, one could make the same argument about Hispanics in California. But we don't need no education.)

Huh, interesting. I know that there's quite a few people moving to Switzerland to work, esp. in the medical/nursing fields, because 1) there are jobs and 2) they pay a lot better.
Based on 1), I don't really buy the "stealing our jobs" thing, but I actually never thought about the "pushing down wages" thing. If Germans go there because it pays better I wouldn't think they help to push down wages - it's not like they do the job for less money, or they wouldn't be going. Although, maybe less than normal still seems an acceptably large amount. Oh well. Sorry, Switzerland.

Well... everybody likes too bitch about Germans, that's what we let them in for :-) I can only speak about my environment, of course, but:

- my family let a young German doctor live in our house till he had found an appartment
- when I was at university, about half of the professors were German. I didn't hear any complaints. (Then again, students are probably aware that on a higher education level, working abroad is normal - may be different in other fields)
- we have a lot of Germans where I work. We can hardly find enough good people when hiring Germans and French people, so why would we complain (same limitation as above, plus, my coworkers obviously have a job, and don't need to fear losing it either. We're paid if we get our friends to join the firm, so we may, again, not be representative).

That being said, people have raised a fass... uh, fuzz about Germans. Much enough so that when I go on an international forum and read 'Oh no! They're stealing our jobs and women!', I instantly think about Germans. Even so, I'd bet any sum an actual vote would be in favour of the great canton.

If I remember correctly, a survey 2-3 years ago found that Germany was the common swiss' preferred country :eek:
