"Planet Earth"

The series premiere is tomorrow night on the Discovery Channel -- and the preview looks fecking AMAZING (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XpDc4Knoqw). Watching it literally gives me chills. Makes me wish I had an HDTV so I could bask in its high-def glory.

The making of the series is equally impressive. Extremely high-end technology allowed the film crew to cover more than 200 locations, netting 2000 hours of footage -- much of which had never been captured before. For instance, a state-of-the-art zooming camera rig was able to film wolf hunts from a helicopter over two miles away, and boat crews managed to capture a lightning-quick shark attack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsDpwqbMioU) on high-speed film. To read more about the technology behind the show, click here (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.03/view.html) for a great write-up from Wired Magazine.

Two thousand hours? We have to watch ALL THAT?!

Really though, looks amazing. I might actually watch it.

Anyway, this show seems vaguely interesting...I'll have to check it out, certainly.

Nice. Still, seems to me to be just another wildlife documentary, only this time done with mad style.

The preview was interesting. Gave me chills, even. But mostly because of the music. I'm a sucker for music. :)

It'll be a commitment -- this is an 11-part series, broadcasting through May, IIRC. But it would be sooo worth it.

The bird thing was interesting, but it would have been only mildly so if it hadn't come with such awesome music. :)

People always underestimate the importance of music. Music can make or break a film. Or a TV show. Or an attempt by me to get into a girl's pants.

Well, what about this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNDpaxVw8W8)? Or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Awtch-JHEJg)? Those were plenty cool, and had no music at all.

Note that I'm not really disagreeing with you -- the music certainly helps. In fact, I'd like to know where it's from so I can buy it. But I think that the documentary will be incredibly cool by itself.

See, that's why we have a licence fee.

If you didn't know, it was made by the BBC, although you guys get a new narrator (god knows why they took the legend that is David Attenborough off it, he's the best at these shows. At least the DVD release in the US has him.)

Saw it last year; it really is unbelievable.

Just because a piece of music is called Entrance Of The Gladiators (http://mama.indstate.edu/users/nizrael/midis/bigtop.mid) It doesn't mean it makes you seem macho.

It makes me want to become a naturalist or something. To travel the world and film and photograph nature. thats my dream job. Also, around second 25 or 26, it looks like there is a unicorn. I might just be seeing things though.

But playing a piece called Entrance of the Gladiators at full blast with the windows rolled down while cruising down the block? MACHO MANIA.

I'm totally with nadkor on this one. Planet Earth is an absolutely brilliant series and David Attenborough is the Natural World presenter/narrator. I got the DVD for christmas, although I didn't need it because both series are often shown back to back on UKTV history on Sundays. I can't stress how great the series are.
