Which country has (or had) the best flag? Which one has (or had) the ugliest one?

Title is self-explanatory.

So which national flag (current or previous) looks the best, and which one looks the worst?

My personal favourite:
The unofficial Irish flag of the 18th century

My least favourite:

The Flag of Afghanistan, because it's a symbol of terr'r.

I would have to go with Ghana, maybe Syria, and Antigua and Barbuda is close in there too.

My choices are heavily influenced by the criteria of the North American Vexilogical (flag study) Association (http://www.nava.org/Flag%20Design/GFBF/index.html), Note that in this tutorial, "Good Flag, Bad Flag", they use Bangladesh as an example of a good flag demonstrating rule #1: Keep it Simple.

Yes, Libya has a very bad flag, but Poland, Monaco, and Indonesia put up a good fight with their vaccuous horizontal red and white.

Despite my UNITINU post, I like the US flag too. It's got the symbolism like Kyronea said, but it's also simple in design, while still maintaining it's subtle complexities. It's a good flag from a design standpoint.

But from an awesome standpoint, nothing beats Barbados. Blue and yellow are pretty much the most amazingly cool combination of colors you can find, and its got a fucking trident in the middle. How cool is that?

That's weird, I thought the post-war constitution made it so that Japan couldn't have a military force capable of striking outside it's borders. Seems like a navy would exactly conform to that law.

Their navy lacks land attack weapons (aside from the little 5 inchers). They only use anti-ship and anti-aircraft weapons. I guess one could call those defensive in nature.

Not necessarily patriotically, more like having all sorts of automatic reactions to it. You know... "the Stars and Stripes", "the Red, White, and Blue", etc. If you're an American, you can't help but associate the flag with America and all it's supposed to stand for, regardless of your opinion of the country itself. I just wonder what it'd be like to view it fresh, without all the unconscious associations and preconceived notions.

The Asian nations would never tolerate Japan using the Naval Ensign - the Naval Ensign is to Asia what the Swastika is to Europe - the sign of an oppressive and murderous regime.

The flag I like the least is Libya - all that green; too boring. In fact, any flag that has no real design behind it, I dislike.

Personally, I have a thing with all the old British colonial flags, Union Jack in the corner, blue background and the coat-of-arms.

Well, I'm sure they could do *something* to dress up the regular one. Maybe a sun actually coming up from the horizon, since it's supposed to be rising. The one they have on it now is clearly not rising, it's all the way up.

Actually I believe you can see consistent moments where each country ruled from London has been held back in deciding it's own policy. Wales for eaxample has massive problems over the years but has been totally unable to sort them. Scotland the same, then England gets screwed because of the oposite.

For me that is why the Union is so horrible, no one really wins. No one can follow the policies that they really want to there fore each country gets screwed over.

Every country has it's problems. Do you think that if Scotland were to leave the UK, for example, that poor inner-city areas of Glasgow will somehow disappear? Every constituent country of the UK has problems, as does every other country accross the world. Independence won't change much, I'm afraid.

In your opinion ( you will see what I am getting at soon) However what I believe Scottish independence will do is allow more focused support for those areas of scotland that need help rather comming from Westminster.

And far from held back, the Union make the UK a superpower right up until WW1, and a great power thereafter.

Hmm I don't feel this is exactly true, England already had an extensive empire prior to the act of Union with Scotland. If anything it made us weaker as we took on scotlands debt. Also scotland was hardly the centre of the world either socially or economically. As a contributing influence to the British empire I would make it quite a low one. Placing the english industrial revolution, Piracy and gunboat diplomacy far above it.

Not everyone in Scotland, for example, has the same policy they want, and the same is true of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. People vote and decide policies, not countries.

True, but I feel that there is more chance that the average Scot would agree with their country men than for example the average english person (what ever that may mean) because I don't feel the Union is real, I still believe that people see it in terms of english scotland and wales. Therefore I believe there is still disjoined policy and disjointed thinking. Having true seperated countries would allow more focused thinking to occure within those coutries.

Think this is an ignorant statement. Pre the Act of Union Scotland cetainly had difficulty establishing an overseas foothold. However at this stage the major developing nation was probably Spain England may have had a few more footholds but not massive. Only after the Act of Union did Britain become the major superpower. The Industrial revolution was a British experience I donot think you can define an English industrial revolution separate from Scotland. Ceratainly the development of Glasgow and industrial towns such as New Lanark are illustrative of the industrial revolution in Scotland. The 2nd city of the empire was Glasgow with its connections to the Americas. I am not sure about the reference to piracy and gunboat diplomacy but there were both Scottish and English pirates.

Many of the scientific and cultural developments of the Victorian era were consequences of the Scottish enlightenment. Think of some of the names who benefitted from a Scottish education.

I think al the home countries have benefitted from the Union in terms of influence but also the sharing of ideas and cultures but all have brought us to this point in time.
