Honorary degrees? They are, in themselves, the worst idea ever!

"Yay, I can just become a politician, dump a bunch of money on the universities, and then have them say I have a degree in engineering, medicine and law!"

Or, in other words, what are the points of honorary degrees?

I'd just like to add that it's the first time ever the UF Faculty Senate has voted in such a way--to deny someone an honorary degree.

Now it cleared up in my mind. I was racking my brains for what/who is the 'former Bush'... wait, ain't there two former governor Bushes? One's in Texas, one in Florida?

*reads article*

Ah. The Florida Bush. I thought it was the hedgerow they're giving an honorary degree.

Because you can't get a real one

I gotta agree with you there, man.

I would like to note, for the record, that the proper way to differentiate between the brothers Bush is to write the Florida one's name as Jeb! complete with exclamation point. That's what was on the signs he carpeted Florida with in his election campaigns.

Refresh my memory. Was he defeated or did he not seek reelection?

He was term-limited out.

Edit: And let me add that I've been very pleasantly surprised by the performance of his Republican successor, Charlie Crist.

Jeb! was popular in some places--higher education in general was not one of them. But I imagine he was less popular at UF than at other Florida universities because he didn't kiss their asses enough. UF has this goal to become like other major state universities--a rival of Ivy League reputation like Michigan or Cal Berkeley--and that's fine, but they want to do it at the expense of other Florida universities. Jeb didn't help them as much as he might have, so there's probably a little petulance at work here. It wouldn't surprise me if he winds up with the degree in the long run.

I did, and I'm glad I was wrong considering that I'm living in this state. I'd still have preferred Davis, but I'm glad Crist hasn't been an asshole. He can still blow it, though, if he lets the legislature fuck over the poor by turning property tax into sales tax.

Nope--I'm at one of those universities that the UF wants to grow at the expense of. The problem is that UF has a lot of alumni in the legislature and my university--sorry, not going to post it here--doesn't, so there's not much chance of stopping it over the long haul, unless we graduate some future legislators.

I think that may be the last Bush we have to deal with for a while, unless more move in. Jeb!'s wife doesn't much like politics from what I understand, and their daughter is a crackhead who was once busted with dope while in rehab (nothing happened to her, of course).

I am a graduate of Florida State University (BFA-Music Theater 1987). It is my sincerest hope you work there Nazz, if that is the case I may very well be able to meet someone from NS in real life <gasp!>.

Kudos to the Gators for denying Jeb! his honorary degree there (UF), although I would have thought a conservative institution in the heart of redneck Gainesville would have dropped to their knees and worshipped the slimy bastard.

I have a couple of very dear friends who work at UF. They got to tease me about us winning the Emerald Bowl and they got the National Championship in College Football. It still hurts...even though I am not as big a sports nut as some.

I could see the point when they were a way to recognise someone who clearly had the ability but not done the exams. Like awarding a top businessman an honorary degree in business. He's demonstrated the ability, just not via the exams. Where it's just for giving money though it is stupid.

Since when is Jeb Bush a top businessman? If he wants a degree let him attend college and pay for the right to do so like the rest of us. Instead of trying to get something for nothing.

Incidentally, I found this quote in the article interesting:
"The committee endorsed him,'' (University of Florida President Bernie) Machen said. "It is unheard of that a faculty committee would look at candidates, make recommendations and then (those candidates) be overturned by the Senate.''
So the problem is that the Faculty Senate didn't simply rubber-stamp the endorsement? If the Faculty Senate is just supposed to approve whatever the committee does, why bother having the Senate vote on it in the first place?

But then, people in chief executive positions are always annoyed when those lesser beings in representative legislative bodies don't simply bow down to their commands, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised...
