So I turn twenty years old today...
...and I feel somewhat...meh...about it. For the longest time I used to look forward to my birthday as a fun celebration...but for the last couple of birthdays I've not felt so excited. Perhaps that's simply me growing up.
Of course my family is not likely to celebrate my birthday today. For the past several days my three siblings and my parents have been quite ill with something vaguely flu-like in symptoms. I've spent the past few days caring for them as best as I could. My little brother's birthday was on Thursday but we had to postpone celebration of that since on that day he was quite feverish and delirious.
But, that's how life is, isn't it? One minute you're all happy and carefree, and the next an illness sneaks up behind you, smashes you in the head with a mallet and drags you off by your shirt.
So...I turn twenty years old today...Yay?

Happy birthday.
It sounds more like you're disappointed that people are too ill to celebrate than actually not caring about the day. If it makes you feel better, I had school on my 18th, and my uni finals on my 21st. It's not the end of the world.

Well, at first I thought it was that too, but I've felt somewhat meh about it for the past couple of years, and I even had a girlfriend to celebrate my birthday with last year, so that's not it.
I think I'm just finally getting past celebrating my birthday like it's something huge when it really isn't all that huge.

I think that really is just growing up. When you're little, it's something you look forward to all year. Then you're a bit older and you're much busier with other stuff, so they tend to creep up on you. I think you just learn to enjoy them at a 'lower' level, having a pleasant day rather than a super-exciting day.

Aye.
Whatever happens, I'll probably enjoy the day, even if I spend it caring for my family again.(Though to be honest I actually enjoy doing that because I like making my family happy and caring for them when their sick helps cheer them up.)
In any case, thank you for the happy birthday wish.

It looks like you're not only turning older, but also a little wiser. ;)
Those thoughts are normal and shouldn't drag you down - it's part of the growing-up-routine.
How about you do celebrate your birthday with your folks over a nice, hot chicken soup? I bet it sounds fantastic when they sing you a song in a hoarse voice. ;)
Anyway, have a good one, und alles Gute zum Geburtstag!

True true!
Reminds me of when I moved back to the US from Germany when my old man was reassigned. We went to visit some family friends and as soon as I said that I had come over from Germany the other kids asked me if 'we' had Happy Days...I was rather puzzled but replied that yes...we had happy days...and sometimes sad days...not realising that they were referring to the TV show! Doh!
Anyway...I'd like to think that we all can have happy days....eventually. If we are lucky.
Yeah.
Right.
Damn I'm just too cynical.

Well, mainly watching over my sick family, but even if that weren't the case, I'd be here anyway as I really have nothing better to do. It's not like I've got somewhere I can go party or something, especially since I'm not a party-person anyway.

That is life. Things start to lose that emotional importance. That is ok, your mind focus on other stuff.
Fortunaly, life gives us another chance at living that emotional strengh of our inocence, and that is when we have kids. Having kids is the second chance you have at reliving your infancy and all those feelings involved.

Eh? Why the damnation, Vetalia?
And I suppose you're right...though it's probably because 21 is considered a threshold age here in the U.S. I'd imagine elsewhere 20 might be a big deal.

And I suppose you're right...though it's probably because 21 is considered a threshold age here in the U.S. I'd imagine elsewhere 20 might be a big deal.
Or 18. 19-20 are kind of those weird intermediate years where you're too young to legally drink but too old to be tried as a juvenile for offenses. Not that I've every been in that situation or anything...

At least you had the possibility of getting a birthday, perhaps even a party. It's not like you had to use all of your (very hard-earned) money to pay bills, a massive mortgage debt left by your dead grandmother, and to buy food so you could survive, like yours truly.
Come on, everybody was sick. It's not like you're in something really fucking serious (like some of us happen to be).
