My last two pieces of work have been 3000 words each and I started them from scratch, with no research, 3 days before they were due in. Before that, I finished another 3000 word piece in 2 days (but with research) and a 2000 word piece in a day. My best ever was 1500 words without having done any research in 4 hours, after having spent the previous 3 days finishing a lab report and then drinking heavily the night before starting/handing it in.

I've yet to get below a 2.1 on essays and lab reports.

hmph. we've got this score stateside that includes 6 major topics (grammar, spelling, yatta yatta yatta, you get the point) that we're graded on, and we're assigned a score of 1 to 6 depending on how we did.

im not familiar with the British system, however.

im not familiar with the British system, however.

Everything's marked and given a percentage score, but then it tends to be referred to by its degree grade equivalent. It goes: First (70+%), 2:1 (60<=x<70%), 2:2, 3rd, and probably fail or something after that.

I'm glad I did a technical course rather than one with wordy stuff to write

Ah, ok. Well, one of the British systems basically grades you into 5 categories - 1st, 2.1, 2.2, 3rd and fail, in order of how good you are. Originally, the 1st grade was reserved for literally whoever was first, or at least a very select group i.e. the elite. A 2.1 was considered a superior student group, a 2.2 the sort of average, a 3rd was a bit shit and...well, fail means fail anywhere really. However, the onset of shitloads of universities, including polytechnics and such, meant that the system had to be partially standardised. Now it's just 70%+ is a 1st, 60-69% = 2.1, 50-59% = 2.2 and 40-49% is a 3rd. There's other systems e.g. pass, honours and distinction, but that one's fairly widespread.

You've a different grading system, that's all. In reality, it's bloody hard to get 60%, much less 70 or above. There's a good deal of foreign students in UK universities, I'm sure they'd also inform you of this.

Still working on the same stupid paper for a course I took last summer. I actually wrote some paragraphs yesterday - the first change in it since last November.

How's that for procrastination?

I've got some biology coursework to get done by Monday, should be 2000-3000 more words to do. I only just finished taking my results today, but at least I've got all weekend to do it.

By that way, just a question for uni students; how much larger is the workload in university than 6th form (or Highschool I guess in America)? Is it shock or do they lower you in gently?

Oh - didn't see that.
(And I didn't mention the other paper that I worked on, in 2002 it was, I believe? I can't remember. I don't really count that one, though, because I won't be handing it in after all. Even after all the effort I put into it.)

I found University easier... There was, obviously, more work to do at times, and it was harder, but it was also more interesting (and the hours were better ;) ).

First year was quite straightforward though, mostly.

Depends entirely upon what course you're doing and where you're doing it, I'd imagine. All the biology-based degrees where I'm at, for example, had some multichoice exams in the first year and I had very little in the way of coursework. Even in my second year now, I've had the equivalent of one hard homework a week, two essays and two lab reports, although the exams are much harder. The final year is where all the work piles up with an entire project to design, implement and write up.

Conversely, I know people who have >2000 word essays almost every week on engineering and medics who've had to make a poster for their second year coursework. Realistically, uni's like less work but far more concentrated.

I had a job as the night operator at an answering service while I was at University. The paper was due at 9:00 am, and I started it on a laptop at work at 3:30. It was supposed to be a 10 page research paper on classical Greek art, and I produced an 8 page paper of pure conjecture (I didn't even have a bibliography because I didn't cite anything) covering bronze-age Mycenean fortificational architecture.

I got an A.

Last year in May we had the rough draft, and then the final, of our research paper for Advanced Placement World History, due. We theoretically been working since January, but the night before the draft was due, I had yet to get a word typed. So I all nighted, and in the morning had a fifteen page paper, on which I recieved the C-...and then two weeks later, the night before the final was due, I all nighted editing it. My mom caught me, and was really pissed, and was like, oh no, this is terrible...but it wasn't. I turned in my fully edited nineteen page paper on The Development of British Tanks from 1916-1943, and recieved an A- on the final. So I was pleased, and my mom was put in her place. Otherwise she is cool, though.

I was working on a paper about US involvement in Vietnam untill 3am one morning. After I finished, I had to write my final essay for musical theatre, saying what I'd take out of my experience in My Fair Lady, and I was so screwed up from Vietnam, the drama thing was ridiculous. I started crying anc confessing how drama was an escape from my home life, and everybody else at school thinks I'm crazy, and loving something is like stepping backwards off a cliff, not knowing how high up you are, or if anyone will catch you. My acting teacher read it, and was like, "Uhhhhh...are you on something?"
