hmmm, why on earth are Fall Out Boy, MCR, Green Day, Bling 182, Panic! or any such bands popular? Because most musical consumers give consideration only to "hype" and extant populariy (namely; "oh, won't I be cool if I listen to this"), as opposed to actual quality.

There's a few particular bands I really can't stand at the moment - Enter Shikari and My Chemical Romance are probably at the top of the list. Kaiser Chiefs are close behind, as well.
As for well-established, apparently well-liked bands, I never really got the appeal of the Beatles. I mean, the music's ok, quite a lot of it is actually good, with some of it being really very good. But they aren't that great. They are a very good band, but that's pretty much the best I could say of them.

I hate all but two of the bands on your list (Having to choose one, I chose Led Zeppelin. Most. Overrated. Band. Evar.). The fact of the matter is that modern music is almost completely empty of any redeeming factors. It sucks, but shit happens.
Early Husker Du is amazing (their later stuff, Post-Zen Arcade, I don't find so enamoring), I'm especially fond of "Makes No Sense At All" and "Divide and Conquer". Black Flag has good moments, but it also has weak moments. Stuff like Jealous Again leaves me cold, but Drink and Drive and their version of Louie, Louie are good.
U2 got mentioned earlier. They suck now, but back before Bono learned to sing, they were really good. Their first album was excellent. Everything after that? Trash.

We're into subjective ground here when it comes to taste, but can you list what you don't actually like about them? Husker Du are popular now? When did that happen?
Anyway, I can't stand Nickelback. Ugh. You want popular & shitty, they've got it in spades. As for the list, the Grateful Dead are easily the most annoying shit on there. I tried to watch their final performance at Winterland, but the music was just so painfully awful that I had to change the channel halfway through the second song (it wasn't the second of the set, but the second song I heard). It could've been a case of HLPS (Horrible Last Performance Syndrome), but the program suggested it was their finest ever... And that is pretty fucking depressing.
And as far as Husker Du's concerned, I love all of their work. Sure, their later material won't exactly floor you, but it's much more flavorful than their earlier stuff (compare the guitarwork in Candy Apple Grey and Warehouse to the guitarwork in Zen Arcade and New Day Rising, and you'll see what I mean).
Then again, every Husker Du album sounds totally different from the next, so there's really no complaining (unless, of course, you're just a dick who likes to bitch about everything) about "selling out" or "going Pop".
For more on this, get your hands on their last demo session, recorded in 1988 (if at all possible). Think Workbook crossed with Metal Box.

I can't stand panic at the disco. Their songs make no sense and don't have a good tune, so I'm not sure how they caught on.
Think about this. Plenty of songs by the Beatles are sung out of tune. And they're some of their most popular songs (Eleanor Rigby, Blackbird, etc.)
And plenty of them make no sense whatsoever (I am the Walrus, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, etc.)
But they're still good.
So, really, the Beatles somehow managed to make something that would normally be really annoying good.
Now, Panic! at the disco succeeds not because they have good music. No, they succeed because they are among the best thing in recent music developments popular in pop culture. Which really doesn't say much for pop culture.

Nah, I don't believe in the occult. But there's something about my generation (and it saddens me to think I am a part of this generation) that has no respect for the law, authority, or decency anymore. Smoking crack, doing drugs, having sex, shooting cops, and reducing women to mere "bitches" and "hos" seems to fit that bill unpleasently well.
Of course, music sales have tanked in recent years (21 percent down, this year alone?) so maybe people are getting the idea.

You'll find that Social Conservatives had something to bitch about about the music and culture of each generation, but somehow not only are we still alive, we still have to deal with them on a regular basis.
Smoking crack, having sex, hating cops, and sexism have been around for generations. Pop Rap is just more honest than other things about what pop culture is really about. Sex, drugs, and faux anti-authoritarian posturing.
Record sales are down because of iTunes and it's equivalents. Why pay the RIAA an arm and a leg for an album, when you can get the one song you actually want for 99 cents. Remember, most music pop music fans don't give a fuck about the art of the artist in question: they just want the hits and the social status that comes with them.
