Two students who got in trouble for wearing clothing with logos and words on them are being represented by the ACLU. One kid had a "Jesus Freak" T-shirt and another wore Winniw the Pooh socks.
I'm sick and tired of people on this forum claiming that the ACLU is anti-Pooh. Clearly they stand up for anyone's right to their own beliefs, even if they're into the Pooh bear.

The ACLU defends civil liberties, and I support their case in this regard. Sure, it's a little bit silly, but many of these cases are, and oftentimes silly abridgements can lead to serious abridgements.

that's the point. To the ACLU there is no such thing as a "silly" abridgement.

Seriously, cited for logo'd socks? That's just over the top.
Banning logo'd clothing is one thing. Logo'd socks are entirely different.

Thank you, I was going to say exactly that. Socks? They should be glad the kids are wearing socks!

Check a little deeper, one might find logo'd prophylactics.

Wouldn't it be cool to run a student protest by giving out t-shirts to all the students with a picture of Jesus The Pooh on it? :D

the ACLU pretends to defend civil liberties
"I am for socialism, disarmament, and, ultimately, for abolishing the state itself... I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and the sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal." Roger Baldwin - Founder of the ACLU
the ACLU was at the time a front organization for the American Communist Party

Thomas Jefferson believed in slavery. Doesn't mean the organization he helped start, the USA, still promotes slavery.

There must be some mistake, the ACLU can't defend christians, they are dedicated to destroying christianity everywhere they find it.

Are school uniforms illegal in some bits of the US, then? Any reason?
I read the top comment on the article. That was a silly thing to do. Oh well.

Oh not this shit again:
1) the views of the founder of an organization does not in any way necessarily reflect the views of that organization. Steve Jobs might keep a PC at home, this doesn't stop him from running Apple.
2) While it is true that the ACLU defended many communists in the early years, the communists were one of the groups of people subjected to numerous civil rights violations, but the ACLU did not do so exclusivly:
An independent outgrowth of the American Union Against Militarism, the Bureau opposed American intervention in World War I. The NCLB provided legal advice and aid for conscientious objectors and those being prosecuted under the Espionage Act of 1917 or the Sedition Act of 1918. In 1920, the NCLB changed its name to the American Civil Liberties Union, with Baldwin continuing as its director.
In the year of its birth the ACLU was formed to protect aliens threatened with deportation, along with U.S. nationals threatened with criminal charges by U.S. Attorney General Alexander Mitchell Palmer for their communist or socialist activities and agendas It also opposed attacks on the rights of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and other labor unions to meet and organize.
In addition, he's been dead for 60 years.

Of course they defend Winne the Pooh for the moral depravity that it is.
You have a bear that hangs around with a pig all the time. Obviously Homosexual
The bear is also the constant companion of a boy. Pedophile.
Where is the father of Roo?
Tigger is obviously on drugs.
Eeyore? Obviously another pedophile since Christopher Robin is always fixing his tail.
Hephalumps and Woozles? Can we say LSD!
The ACLU DEFENDS IT GOES AGAINST GOOD CHRISTIAN VALUES!

NO, it was started by a member of the US Socialist Party, which at the time was a respected and important third force in American politics. It even had members elected to Congress. Baldwin was a politician of note, and spoke for a large minority of Americans at the time.

IIRC, it was labeled a front for the communist party by Senator McCarthy, possibly as part of the "you're either for us or against us" policy combined with the ACLU's defense of "known communists."
It is not unusual for an early 20th century socialist to believe that defending the rights of the individual will eventually lead to a perfect communism. Utopian ideals are nothing new.

However, he later denounced communism in his book, A New Slavery, which condemned "the inhuman communist police state tyranny" [1]. In the 1940s, Baldwin led the campaign to purge the ACLU of Communist Party members

What the fuck kind of dress code is that?
As for those who hate the ACLU, it'll probably be like some pro-life woman. They're only pro-life until they need an abortion, then they go happily back to protesting.
Anyone who was offended by this...Is too sensitive.
