"you're historically wrong..."

I enjoyed watching The Daily Show last night as John Stewart did a recap of his interview with John Bolton where Bolton kept telling him "you're wrong..." It was amazing because everything Bolton said was found to be in contrast to the facts on the ground. The best was when Bolton told Stewart he was wrong when he said that Abraham Lincoln believed in hearing the opposition so much that he allowed even his enemies into his government to serve in cabinet positions. Stewart was pointing out the contrast between Lincoln and Bush with his emphasis being comprised of loyalty and only allowing people who agree with him to ever give him advice. John Stewart then flashed back to an interview he had with a historian (of whom any historian would agree) regarding the fact that Lincoln even made men who ran against him part of his cabinet. Bolton was made to look like a total jackass and it showed the level of understanding possessed by your general Bush appointee. How does he find people who have so little knowledge in the area they are supposed to work? How do we allow this President to get away with putting people at risk with his horrible appointments? When will competence reign supreme? How can we allow an idiot with his merry band of idiot followers to make decisions about things that have no fricken clue about? Most Bush appointees have the brain mass of rice pudding and their detriment to our country becomes clearer every day. Can we even withstand two more years of this?

I think he got Bolton in the same bag as Rumsfeld. Thick, arrogant, short tempered and a bully.

Aw man, this is exactly the reason why I'm so sad that I can't watch the Daily Show on my computer any longer. (Ever since they switched the Comedy Central homepage my OS is too old for the player... :()

Yet, it's good to see that at least someone (Jon) is able to show again and again by which kind of persons the U.S. are run right now. :D

It's amazing because they truly dismantled anything they had to say. Both Bush and Bolton were so incredibly wrong it just made me laugh out loud with enthusiasm. It wasn't even a real battle. Bush and Bolton got slammed even if you were the biggest Bush sycophant out there you would be saying "now that's how you kick an ass." It just makes you wonder more and more each day why articles of impeachment have not been put through.

I thought the doom of democracy would be the inevitable rise of vacuous figure-head air-heads. Shiny plastic puppets who'd never actually do anything. Having witnessed "Bush & Co. Ltd" in action, I can only admit that I was erroneously optimistic on that count.

I vote the next president be an inanimate object. A potato would be useful, if worst comes to worst and it starts getting out of line, we can always roast it and serve it up to a passing visiting dignitry.

Why not a stuffed teddy bear? Then they can claim that it would present a 'softer' government :p

Sure, why not bring it full circle? After all teddy the bear was named after Teddy the President. Only problem is, a teddy bear is not so useful when folks start getting hungry.

I loved that part. When Colbert just started flailing "PUSSIES" at the Democrats it was amazing.

It was one of the best episodes I've seen. I really can't figure why Bush ass kissers even go on Stewart's show. Do they think they are going to get the best of him or something? They about always leave looking like a fool. Maybe they need to get smacked around and so go on the Daily Show to get a good dose.

On NPR's "This American Life" there was a guy who talked briefly about a guy he went to high school with. He went on to describe this guy as a total jerkoff, the kind of guy who would cross the street just to hassle you. So after about five minutes of hearing about this prick you find out it is Jack Abramoff.

It's not just Bolton. A few months ago he had Bill Bennett on, and he got Bennett so twisted around that Bennett was actually making Stewart's points for him. :D

Jon Stewart regularly dismantles the conservatives who appear on his show, because he's willing to actually ask them tough questions and demand answers. And he's willing to call them on it when their answers are BS. That makes him a better journalist than most of the "serious" journalists out there.

While Stewart is brilliant, he will have a hard time surpassing himself on crossfire:

Stewart attracted media attention as a result of a televised exchange with former CNN personality Tucker Carlson on Crossfire on October 15, 2004. Stewart criticized the state of television journalism and pleaded with the show's hosts to "stop hurting America", and referred to both Carlson and co-host Paul Begala as "partisan hacks". This exchange became one of the most widely viewed Internet videos to date, and a topic of much media discussion.

During the interview, Stewart asserted that Crossfire had failed in its responsibility to inform and educate viewers about politics as a serious topic. Stewart complained that the show engaged in partisan hackery instead of honest debate, and said that the hosts' assertion that Crossfire is a debate show is like "saying pro wrestling is a show about athletic competition." Carlson responded by saying that Stewart criticizes news organizations for not holding public officials accountable, but when he interviewed John Kerry, Stewart asked a series of softball questions. Stewart responded that the media is in dismal shape if "[it is looking] to Comedy Central for [its] cues on integrity." When Carlson continued to press Stewart on the Kerry issue, Stewart said, "You're on CNN! The show that leads into me is puppets making prank phone calls! What is wrong with you?" When Carlson told Stewart he was not as funny in person as he was on his show, Stewart retorted, "You're as big a dick on your show as you are on any show." In response to prods from Carlson to "be funny" (despite the studio audience's laughter throughout the segment), Stewart said, "No, I'm not going to be your monkey."

The day after the incident occurred, on The Daily Show Stewart said, "I went to this place, Crossfire, which is a nuanced public debate show named after the stray bullets that strike and kill innocent bystanders during a gang fight. So I go to Crossfire and, let's face it, I was dehydrated, it's the Martin Lawrence defense... and I had always in the past mentioned to friends and people I meet on the street that I think that show blows. So I thought it was only the right thing to do to go and say it to them personally on their program... but here's the thing about confronting someone with that on their show... they're there ... uncomfortable... And they were very mad, because apparently, when you invite someone on a show called Crossfire and you express an opinion, they... they don't care for that... I told them that I thought their show was hurting America and they came back at me pretty good, they said I wasn't being funny. I then said, 'I know that, but tomorrow I will go back to being funny, and your show will still blow.'"

And he's willing to call them on it when their answers are BS. That makes him a better journalist than most of the "serious" journalists out there.

To be fair there are times that you can see him about to reach over the desk and strangle the liberals he sometimes has on the show. To the hard liners he implores that people have lives to get on with and to the ones closer to the center he is practically begging them to lead, to step up, and they usually let them down. You can see the frustration sometimes at the end of the interview. For a while he had a string of democrats on and he would ask direct things, "What would you do different, shadow government, you're in charge, what would be different." and he kept getting empty answers to the point that I think he stopped asking out of frustration.

It might be a frustration for something that can't exist. He wants the leaders to lead the country responsably so that we can mow our lawns. But as soon as we take our eyes off the wheel it all goes bad. He may, by design, never get what he wants. But we kinda need him out there asking for it.

Watching Bolton last night was like watching Orwell's nightmare in full color. Bolton was using the word democracy to mean "unitary executive" which means, basically, king the way he uses it. Democracy is tyranny, etc.

Actually, I think some Bush advisors are really smart. There's a difference between ignorance and being a lying bastard.

Still, Stephen Colbert. "Are you a bunch of pussies? Well, are ya?"

I was smiling wide watching the Bolten interview and the aformentioned shows that followed. Damn good television if you ask me. CTOAN got it right about needing Stewart out there asking those questions. Same with Colbert. I <3 their efforts to keep the govt. accountable as well as all their charity work!
