Do you think he's looking for a new job?

Depends if he is the one responsible for the backups or not.
After all:
mistakenly reformatted the backup drive, as well.
and
There was still hope, until the department discovered its third line of defense, backup tapes, were unreadable.

Really indicate a truly pathetic backup system, which is where the true blame lies.

It was more like a $220,000 goof that will probably be bailed by the government.

This is why they should get rid of the "Delete Account Information" button.

that's the kind of thing i do at an alarming rate :(

Really indicate a truly pathetic backup system, which is where the true blame lies.
and as i can attest, nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

Wow.

Thats just plain stupid.

The technician...what was he thinking? He'd be collecting his P45 if I was his boss.

The management....what your DR strategy works? Bollocks...you didn't even know the backup didn't work. I'd fire the IT manager as well.

Do you think he's looking for a new job?

Not if he's union. He'll probably just get a reprimand. The real crime is that the backups were unreadable and an army of Micro$oft technicians couldn't make them usable.

Union? "UNION"?

What kind of Never-never-land do you come from, anyway?

"Union". Fuh.

And perhaps then you'll flesh out this nonsense about a "union".

The Federal Government. It's nearly impossible to fire a Federal government worker, because they'll file a grievance in response.

It takes nearly a year to do it. That is, if you know the right paperwork, the right things to write on the paperwork, and if you can survive the union making things impossible to run in your department while you wait.

I've seen management just put people out of their office into a "pool" office where the worker no longer has any responsibilities. They can fuck off all day long, and aren't "fired", but they are out of your hair where they can't mess anything else up.

I've seen rooms with 20 or 30 people like this in them.

This is what the "union" is happy with. Useless workers who aren't fired, and are being paid to do nothing.

Especially when you are still using shit like backup tapes. The head of our CS network switched to rotating secondary harddrive backups years ago.

Eve has pretty much pointed out the important parts. Whether one is civil service or union, the result is about the same. Mistakes are not exactly rewarded, but they aren't punished, either.

It was probably SAD. We all get it up here. Even that sawed off little prick Ted "The Hulk" Stevens admitted as much.

Oh yeah, our state is corrupt as all get-out, but it's getting better with Sarah now.

I work at a bank and can attest just how easy it is to fuck up this badly. Hopefully you do it in a net based program, where the back button is your best friend, or a Alfi (All Finance Database) where you can normally fix a mistake by unticking a box... but god forbid you do it in what we affectionately call "The Black Hole" our DOS-based program that is near-impossible to use and repair than Bush's credibility as a peace-maker...
