Why are we all such judgemental and angry people? A few weeks ago, I started making these video blogs on YouTube, not as myself, but as a character I created. It was partly an acting excercise, but partly also a social experiment. You see, Josephine is a popular girl, and relatively moronic, and has no idea that other people have feelings. When I started out, I was just lampooning a certain group of people. But the more blogs I made (okay, I've only made three), the more attached I became to her, and the more I could justify her behaviour. She doesn't know she's being a b.tch; she really has no idea. She's not bad, she's misguided. So that's why it hurt when today I recieved this comment on my latest video:

It is truly a shame that, when one searches for "Deftones", this pathetic excuse for a human comes up as a hit... congratulations, now I am scared to search for my favourite band on You Tube. Thanks bitch. On a side note however, this video wouldn't be so bad if the music was turned up loud enough to drown out her illiterate speech. It also wouldn't hurt if she wasn't such a fucking eyesore, I find it slightly ironic that SHE is the one who's hobby consists of making fun of fugly people.


I kind of knew I was going to be setting myself up for negative comments, but this hurts more than I expected. Not only was my character personally attacked, but I was called ugly. That's not mature and respectful. It's down right malicious.
I called this an experiment, because I didn't know what I was going to learn. Well, I know now. I learned that even though everybody thinks they're better than everyone else, nobody really is. We're all something to be ashamed of. We're all pathetic excuses for human beings.

A few decades before that we were lining up in trenches and mustard gassing eachother to death.

Even more recently, we had enough nuclear weapons to kill almost every person and animal in the world on standby-alert.

Now, we are critical of one another's dumb internet videos.

What do you think I'm trying to say! She's not a bitch, she says stuff that's bitchy. She's misguided, she doesn't understand. And if she's not allowed to be misguided, why is that jackass allowed to be intentionally mean?


I'm trying to say that we're all fucking pathetic excuses for human beings, and we're all equally fucked up, and we judge unfairly and think it's fair. I don't want to sound cheesy, but I've been in Josephine's shoes now, and I realise making fun of people, even people who make fun of others, is still not right. It's never right, and yet we get this idea that it is, get this idea that we can treat other people like crap, and they won't care. But they do care.

The first one has a pretty crappy sound quality. The second and third are better, but still not great, I admit. But don't worry; I think that commenter guy covered sound quality, amongst the other things he insulted.

Assholes, granted the anonymity of the internet, will be assholes. If it's any consolation, perception is colored by opinion, and the character, if it is annoying, will draw a negative perception on their whole being (Or, as Jean Paul Sarte had it, we see what we are looking for, not what is there)

And, to be honest, this is just a reality of internet culture. There are people without tact or a sense of social pressure (having stepped beyond the bounds of identity) who choose to act in the opposite manner to the manner they are expected to act.

WTF is wrong with you? With my speakers cranked I could here her just fine. Although, with the low quality of Youtube sound, my subwoofer kept making little noises, and being that it was absolutely cranked, blew my homework around (not like I am really doing it).

The only real piece of advice that I can give you TC, is that well, you're always going to run into assholes in your life, it's a part of the human experience. These assholes will try to find anything that they can use against you. You're just going to have to learn how to roll with the punches, and shrug off the assholes. Just do what you like doing and pretty much fuck what anyone else thinks. For everyone asshole, there got to be at least half a hundred of good people.

The character comes across as very judgemental, though, so a harsh response isn't exactly unexpected (and youtube has plenty of people that wouldn't recognize a parody if it was written in the title). You know, I used to think I hated Meryl Streep. Then, I saw her in Postcards From the Edge, and I realized it wasn't her, it was the characters she played that I hated. So, yes, do try to learn to disassociate yourself from the characters you portray. Maybe think of it this way: you know that we think you're lovable and adorable, so if someone dislikes one of your characters, you've succeeded at acting!

Hey, I think you're not the person s/he described ;) .You're not ugly at all. (I do believe it's a matter of taste... but then, maybe s/he likes people who look like, erm... my foot.) I just can't hear the audio though, even with my computer and speaker volume turned up loud.

Incidentally, this reminds me of something that happened here. The actress played the very evil antagonist in a popular soap opera. Then one day, while shopping in the mall, an angry fan grabbed and pulled her hair (that's painful!). When she was asked about her reaction, she said something like, "Well, at least I have been an effective actress, enough to affect people."
