Summarily, a couple polar bear cubs were rejected by the mother and the zoo intervened to save one of them after the other died. Some self-important animal rights activist is arguing that the animal should be put down because it the wild it would have died and hand-feeding is "not species appropriate."

Well no shit, Sherlock. Hand-feeding any animal is "not species appropriate" because they are fucking animals, but that isn't the damn point. Who cares if it would have died in the wild, it's a god damn zoo and the point of the zoo is to keep animals alive, breed them, and raise them for survival of the species one way or another. The problem with animal rights activists is animals have rights above and beyond humans except where those rights would conflict with the self-important beliefs of the superhuman rights of animals activists.

If this is about Knut from the Berlin Zoological gardens, then you've been had.

Yeah, here you have it:
"Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws," animal rights activist Frank Albrecht was quoted as saying by the mass-circulation Bild daily, which has featured regular photo spreads tracking fuzzy Knut's frolicking.

"The zoo must kill the bear."Bild is a decidedly unreliable source.

What actually happened is that Albrecht sued the Leipzig Zoo for a putting a baby bear down. The courts let it happen on the grounds that raising the bear by feeding it by hand would not be species appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws. Now Knut has been allowed to live, even though by what the courts said, he should be put to death. Albrecht wanted to call that to attention.

That's why you keep a seal in your freezer to distract it with.
