Great memory?
"Oooh, look! A castle!" "Where?" "What?" "You said something!" "Did I?" "Did you what?" "I don't know... Oooh, look! A Castle!" etc. ad infinitum
At times I feel like my short term memory leaves something to be desired. One ex of mine used to lovingly call me The Goldfish, and with good reason! I need to write stuff down or I risk thoughts being lost in oblivion forever, or messages never being delivered. And I suck at remembering names and faces - I've had several conversations whith people who obviously know me without me having a single clue as to who they were or where I knew them from. Luckily, it doesn't happen that often, but it does happen.
I can remember a great deal of more or less useless information, though. Trivia, quotes from movies, what somebody has posted here on NSG...
So how is your memory? Better? Worse?
Anybody out there with photographic memory? That must be nice... :)

I have an excellent semantic memory.

my long-term memory is pretty darned good. I remember what I had for dinner at my 5th birthday party (tandoori chicken and rice), I remember my first day of school, and I remember what I was doing the day the Berlin Wall came down...
But I can't for the life of me remember where I put my glasses...especially if they're on my head. I can't remember what I'm supposed to get at the grocery store. I don't remember if I've already had two cups of coffee or just one, and I sure as hell can't remember all my passwords all that easily. :p
What were we talking about again?
My memory is extremely selective. I can remember random things like the bedsheet story Sinuhue posted a year or so back or details from the story about his accident that Carnivorous Lickers posted, but sometimes in conversations, I'll forget what someone just said, or what I left my room to get when I reach my destination.

My memory leaves much to be desired... I can basically no longer remember the beggining of uni (only last september) and there isnt a chance of remembering anything further back than that with any detail (or at all for that matter...).
My short term memory also sucks big time. If told an equation or something i will have forgotten it seconds later, i can never ever remember the words to songs or quotes from films, if i put down my door keys they will be completely gone
until i search my room to find them.
Now comes the real question, is there any way you can improve your memory?

My memory is very selective. I can store up to 10 phone numbers, 5 birthdays, 2 social security numbers, directions to everything within a five-mile radius, and possibly the today's date. Also, at least the first names of the first 15 people in my monkeysphere. Beyond that I'm screwed.

Varies depending on what I'm trying to remember. Can be very good or very bad.

Really? I always feel like an arse for forgetting all of my friend's birthdays... even if they have told me the day before. I seriously think it could be better, but I am honored by your vote of confidence. :D

Eh I have names and phone numbers for no less than 20 drivers memorized, a dozen business, and several friends. It's not hard.

Like what?
And thank Eddie Murphy for cellphones btw! I can't remember phone numbers anymore, but they're all stored safely on my cell.
On the negative side, they could all be lost if my phone is stolen or misplaced. That's why I try to store a backup of my phone list on my computer (made easy by my Sony Ericsson, thank you corporate stooges! :)) - but I keep forgetting to update it.
Well, not only forgetting. More like 'Rather spending time on NSG than doing it' - damn my addiction :p

WRONG!
Mythbusters proved goldfish have much better memories than that.
As for me...I'm somewhat close to photographic but not entirely. Usually it's more that I preserve the image in my mind--since I think in images and not words anyway--rather than what people say or what I hear, so it's somewhat incomplete. Think of it as a still-shot camera only memory, as opposed to the video camera memory people really mean when they say photographic.

My memory is selective. Ask me anything about Star Wars. I've memorized hundreds of useless facts, can recit songs word for word, but can't remember homework, most peoples faces, what I ate for breakfast that morning, or what anyone was wearing! Someone could probably come naked to school and if asked when I got home on white they were wearing i'd think for a moment and then shrug and say "I dunno. What's for dinner?':headbang:

My um... *checks thread title*... Memory. Yes. Well, maybe. It's a bit random. I did just remember what I had for dinner on Sunday! That's good for me. Birthdays? I can remember three or four of them. What day it is? Unlikely. Names? No. Films I'll have forgotten before the credits have finished. Books are similar.
But then there are other things... My debit card number and info I usually get right. My 25+ character password, easy. Sometimes I surprise people by remembering little facts for a long time, and I know that the speed of light is 186,282.397 miles per second without looking it up. Grudges stay in there forever, and so do favours; I owe a guy I worked with eight years or so ago a pint, but I can't remember his name. Ah well ;)
I have found that writing something down means I'll remember it (without the note!), leaving it to memory guarantees it's forgotten.

My memory is partly photographic, though as someone above said, its normally in still-shots not moving pictures. I'm very good with faces and names, but I should think the other person will have no idea who I am :p My spelling mostly comes from seeing the image of the word in my mind, and I can remember sheet music quite easily, I often play piano without any music.
I do believe that everyone has a photographic element to their memory, just some can use it better than others.
Also, I have a good phonographic memory, as in, I remember alot of music. I can 'play' whole pieces/songs through in my head quite easily, symphony movements that are 10+ minutes long with full orchestra, so if I ever am humming/whistling along, it might sound odd to a listener as I'm just humming one part while I'm hearing the whole rest of the sound/texture.
WRONG!
Mythbusters proved goldfish have much better memories than that.
Mythbusters proved it??
I would have thought that there migh have existed some dapper biologists, a handsome researcher or other type of scientist (say, at Plymouth University for example) who had proven it, kinda like they proved that owls weren't actually wise. But it was Mythbusters? Aaw. I should watch more TV :(
It'll take some time until I forget this misuse of smileys!

Wonderful long term memory. I can remember conversations from 10+ years ago. Horrible short term memory :(
I think they busted that goldfish myth on mythbusters.

I don't have a terribly great memory in general, but I have an eerily good auditory memory - I joke about it being "phonographic." I can sing pretty much any piece perfectly from memory after I have sung it at least once. Fifteen years could pass, and I would still very probably be able to sing the piece perfectly. It comes in very handy, although it does mean that I've never really learned to sight-read properly. :p

I have a rather good memory. My brain is full of useless trivia and I rarely forget something said to me - i'm not so good with remembering dates though. (might be a context thing, i'm otherwise generally good with long numbers)

You know, I have a similar problem. I'm able to fairly easily recall entire songs or pieces as well and it causes me no end of trouble when i'm actually forced to read something i'm trying to learn. But on the other hand, it's kinda cool in that I have my own stereo of sorts inside my head when i'm daydreaming.
I've got a very good memory, I think. I don't even bother to take lecture notes, I can remember details in the exam anyway.

It's a lot easier if you don't rely on address books and speed dial.

I got 59% in an exam this year in Uni based on what I could remember from AS History (4/5 years ago). Confirmed my impression that going to classes is a waste of time...
