On the subject of alcohol

I was having a discussion a few months back with a friend of mine about why we drank. He said he drank for the taste and to "enjoy the drink", and thus would only drink quality liquor.I said I drank for the sole reason of getting really messed up and I didn't care what I drank as long as it got me to my happy place. So my question to you humble NSG people, why do you drink? Is it more of my friend's reason or mine? poll coming.
Most of my friends(and almost all teenagers I've met) who drink do so because of your friend's reason. I would drink(if I could) because I like to experiment with food and flavors.

I drink for the taste. I never understood why people would drink just to be drunk... I regard being drunk one of the downsides.
both of the two actually. it depends on the time and the place and my mood.

I won't drink alcohol I don't like the taste of just for the sake of drinking acohol - that's pretty pointless (and I know people who will do it).
I have, in the past, had drinks "to get drunk." These days, I'll do it to get a little tipsy and have a good time, but it's really mostly because I enjoy the drink in question.

Most of the teenagers I know drink just to get drunk.
As for me, I don't drink and have no desire to. Just doesn't appeal to me.

When I was in university, it was drinking to get messed up. Now it's more of a social thing...one or two on a Saturday night with friends, and not very often at all.

Wait, Soviestan, isn't drinking against the Koran? Explicitly so?

Sometimes I just need to get drunk and be in a different state of mind. Other times I drink because of the taste (ie: a screwdriver after school). And other other times I drink because there is alcohol available, so I get wasted, like at weddings.

Drinking, or rather being drunk, tends to result in a complete loss of inhibition for me. This includes inhibitions when it comes to my writing. So I tend to write better when I've had a few. Granted it often takes a little longer, but it works. Often when getting drunk I'll have a buddy around who's sober enough to write things down once the mood hits me.
So I drink to write.
You still drink, Soviestan?
What...are you one of those who finds alcohol not made from grain or grape?

For me, drinking is one part for the effect and taste, and one part social. I don't drink alone, and rarely have alcohol in the house. It's about beer buzz and conversation, which is why I prefer pubs over clubs.
I don't really drink to get drunk. I just end up that way!
Pubs over clubs anyday!
But that pub must have pub food, or I'm not happy.

Maybe he's converted back to atheism and decided to post whore for attention.

a beer buzz can help you to dance better too.

not anymore. We talked about it months ago and for some reason it crossed my mind so I figured I'd make a thread about and see what you guys say about it.

Mead baby. :p
Also potato vodka. Both are allowed under the wording, and I'm pretty sure they had mead in the region when it was written.

Depends. There are some weekends I drink to be shitfaced, but most of the time I'd rather hold off until I coulg buy something I truly like

Clubs, while good for the occasional bit of eye candy, are far too loud (and often play music I'd sooner not listen to.)
a beer buzz can help you to dance better too.
Incriminating video and photos tell otherwise. ;)

I try not to. I used to drink because it was cheaper and more available than drugs.....for a while I said I drank because I liked the taste, but the truth was that I drank because it was cheaper and more available than drugs. (not that it didn't taste good....)

yeah i can imagine.
but when you drink just enough you get looser and have more confidence and as a result you can dance better. or at least i think so. maybe it's just because i get in the mood after a while (and not because i get semi-drunk).

So it's grain and grapes that Allah hates then, not alcohol.

Back when I used to drink more it was a combination of just plain liking the taste of what I was drinking (Singapore Slings w/ rum instead of gin, Purple Hazes, Blowjob shooters, hot chocolate w/ Baileys, yummers stuff like that), end enjoying the altered state-- I'm mostly a happy, friendly drunk; the inhibitions drop, I like people more, I dance more easily. And bonus: I rarely ever got hangovers, even when I got pretty thoroughly blitzed.
Then I got serious with my bf, who pooh-pooh's drinking (and other recreational, flammable foliage) and now I hardly ever drink, let alone the other thing, because I'd get nagged for it :-P Not even the overt nagging, either, but the *looks* that are like "I repect you less right now." Grr.
The moral of the story is: if you can help it, try not to fall in love with a puritan. They can be a bit of a buzzkill if you enjoy putting something funny in your gas tank once in a while.

it doesn't matter what its made out of. ANY intoxicating substances are not allowed whether it be alcohol, drugs, etc.

depends. During the week, if I drink, it's for taste. Weekends, I have a mission.

Actualy it has already been addressed above that he USED to drink before he converted and that this conversation with his friend took place before that.

My boyfriend doesn't drink either. Sometimes I'll order a beer with my pizza or nachos if we go out. I'll say something or make a comment, and he automatically responds with "Well, someone's had too much to drink." Even if I've only had a quarter of a bottle of beer. It's so tempting to get really smashed, so he can actually see what being drunk is.

I mainly have a few while out with friends. I don't really like to drink to get drunk. I drink things which I think taste good, otherwise I wouldn't bother. But it's mainly social element. They're getting drunk, I'm just enjoying myself.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic. Even if the Koran just specifically mentions drink fermented from grain and grape, the "spirit of the law" as it were is not so hard to interpret.
Question, what about caffeine?
