Think Unions are for You? Think Again!

Delta (http://www.ajc.com/services/content/business/stories/2007/03/20/bizdelta0320a.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=6)is preparing to make some large cash and stock payouts to the non-union employees that sacrificed so much for the company during it's recent financial troubles.
Delta estimated that the typical nonunion employee can expect more than $20,000 in total compensation from the pay package over the next year if Delta meets its profit projections, counting contributions to a new defined-contribution retirement plan. The airline estimates total payouts for all nonunion employees could total about $1 billion.
Oh, and the CEO that brought Delta out of bankruptcy, as well as fighting off a hostile takeover? He isn't taking any bonus payments.

So the Unionists aren't getting any bonuses?

They shouldn't be getting these. Union members don't like the idea of merit or incentive raises. The union pilots have negotiated some big raises for themselves after the company comes out of Chapter 11. The pilots, too, did make some big concessions to keep the company afloat.

Ah right. Well I suppose this is one of those lovely stories of an American corporation not screwing over it's employees during etensive financial difficulty. This CEO goes onto my not too extensive list of respectable CEO's.
That's jolly good - unions are obviously useless, because employers care so much about their workers that they're willing to hand out bonuses like this in order to dissuade employees from joining them.

Clearly this is a case that went both ways. The employees have been as dedicated to the company as the company has been to the employees.
And yes, unions are completely irrelevant in todays climate of over-regulation by the Federal government.

Have to disagree. There is still a lot to be achieved by Unions in the corporate world.

One of the things to remember about unions, management can't join. If all of your low level employees are union, only the management will get the bonus.

It's rather sad that you've managed to turn a praiseworthy action by a CEO into a disgusting propagation of douchebaggery.

I'm sorry, but I am not all that impressed. Unions exist for the very reason you just described...they fight for more compensation for their membership (because from my own personal experience, corporate America truly doesn't care about you). I work at a company were unions are explicitly forbidden...as a result, corporate can pretty much smack us around any way it likes (and does). While SOME unions do indeed go too far, don't try to sell the notion that this defines the standard for American business, because only a pathetic few would make the grade.

Unions in their modern form only exist due to government regulation.
Think 'exclusive representation'.
Think 'exemption from anti-trust laws'.
