Clamoring to hate America

It really says something about the accomplishments of the President's foreign policy when Australia out-polls the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt & Indonesia in dislike for the contribution of the United States to the world.

A recent poll by Time magazine asked people to rate the influence of other nations on the world; positively, negatively or neutral. In regards to their opinion on the just Nigeria & Kenya polled a majority of positive for the United States.

There needs to be a serious overhaul of foreign policy when the citizenry of the United State's allies are less supportive of the US than Arab states. Two terms of contemptuous treatment of her friends has seen the United States change from being the teacher educating and protecting the developing world, to a playground bully seeking to show her dominance and keep all the fun toys to herself.

The race among the peers of America to outdo each in terms of disdain towards her is reaching Olympic proportions and is nothing short of historic. In an increasingly hostile world, where America's enemies are becoming more and more brazen in their attacks, one has to question the logic of continuing to throw sand in the face of her remaining friends.

Meh, we're used to it.

And why in the world does Kenya and Nigeria like us so much?

I think the media and internet has a big roll in why America is hated so much these days. I mean, America has been known to do shady things in the past. The list is really long. But know, you have bloggers that give their two cents, teens in angst that make films using techno music about the evils of the us, or simply anti Us biased news firms that reach out to millions and tell them that the US is oh so bad, when in all reality, its not any worse than it was 150 years ago. I mean, if you get images of US soldiers acting up, or a dumb president saying something...well..dumb, shown to you over and over again, its bound to take a toll on your opinion. Its the same US, same policies, just different internet and media outlook on it.

Good question. Maybe because we give them better weapons than anyone else does? :p

I've just heard in teh news that a third of British population think that the war in Iraq was justified. Once Bush loses his sex slave Blair, he's probably going to be alone.

Question is, does America care that the rest of the world hates us? I mean, this is nothing new. We've been hated for one thing or another constantly for the past 50 years. And we're just desensitized to it. The vast majority of Americans simply don't care if the world hates us.

The hatred of America in Australia is largely down to the Australian government falling over itself to enforce any legislation - particularly filesharing and extradition - that the American administration asks it to. That isn't really the fault of the US, even though it is a bit off for them to be going around asking other countries to bring in copies of their laws with threats of economic pressure - whether you agree with this or not really isn't part of the debate.

The Australians should really dislike the government more for unquestioningly passing these laws which they see as eroding their independence, but they see American legislation flying through Australian courts and they blame the Americans for 'forcing' Australia into it. They are a laid-back people, but they are fiercely proud of being Australian, and they see American-made laws as eroding that.

I expect if the current administration in Lebanon started passing American laws - however unlikely that may be - their level of hatred for America would shoot up further than Australia's, because their latent dislike of America is greater than Australia's, but for them it's an abstract hatred based on their funding of Israel, etc , rather than a direct erosion of freedoms.

(Also, don't forget Lebanon has a high percentage of Christians, and the UAE is extremely wealthy and liberal for an Arab state).

Actually, that's pretty much true, their is totally cynicism over here regarding the US, I think it's just that we don't like them, but Bush and 'terrorism' have just made it worst. I swear, if Labor wins the election this year and tears up ANZUS treaty, no one will care.

Thanks for clarifying, I wasn't sure :D

I'm a Brit but I've got lots of cousins over near Canberra so I have a vague idea what's going on.

Why would you even consider the vaguest possibility that Labor would do that? You do realise Latham isn't running this year.

I tend to get the feeling that most Americans feel that other countries are going to be criticizing the U.S. no matter it does. At least, thats how I feel, or maybe I've just been disillusioned from reading these forums.

I think the difference is that in the past 50 years, your adversaries hated you. Now it's your allies as well.... I'd be worried about that, but then I'm not an USAmerican.

I wouldn't be concerned, alot of issues, this one in particular, have ensured an Opposition victory this year. The fact is, whenever Howard tries to debate Rudd, whether about Iraq, nuclear power etc, he goes down in the polls as preferred PM next to Rudd, and his party with him. The last time the polls were this high for the Opposition was just before Howard got into power. So as a result Howard has resorted to personal attacks (mudslinging), which has made him go down even further in the polls. I just don't think anyone buys what he is saying when talks about 'staying the course in Iraq' when we only have like 1k troops there anyway, with no combat fatalities.

Question is was this a percentage poll/ per capita or a mass votes poll?
Because if 100 Aussies are polled and 80 hate the US, is that fairly comparable to 79 Kenyans who hate America out of 80 polled?

A third? Thats low to say that there must have been 2/3 rd's against the war at the beginning

Also, how can you expect to be popular when you elect an idiot as a president and declare wars that nobody else in the world fully believes is justified?

Of course the world hates the role the US plays in generally buggering things up. Why shouldn't it?

You know I think we (Americans) elected Bush the 2nd time more out of a subconscious effort to spite the world and spit in their face because they were so fervent and vocal about their dislike of Bush and Americans. Of course I don't speak for anyone but myself as this is just an opinionated observation I made. Any truth behind it is questionable. The funny thing is, is that we do the same to other countries all the time, as the gentleman from Australia pointed out about American-legislation being pushed down there. The hypocracy amuses me is all.

Either way I'm use to it and as someone pointed out, overall, I'm desensitized to it and could really care less.

And it's that wonderful "Fuck the World" attitude which is best exemplified by El Presidente and the brilliant post-invasion Iraq strategy.

No, it's best exemplified by the people of the United States not caring what the rest of the world thinks of them and their nation. This goes beyond temporary politics.

Do you think it's precisely that attitude that promote more dislike and distrust for America? For one, no, not everyone has always hated America. Two, your allies should like you more than the average. Finally, "no man is an island" and you should remember that. Please remember that we cannot exist in this world alone and cannot draw the ire of other developed nations. America is not as bad as some would make it, but our policies since WW2 have clearly gotten worse. Do you think there's a reason people feel this hate? Perhaps our messing with their countries internal politics for our own benefit while letting the government run rough shot over the common people? Too many instances of that to mentions, but you're intelligent so fill in the blanks.

Speak for yourself. The myopic and ignorant who cannot see past their nose may have these attitudes. People who look at the long term picture, perhaps even beyond their own lifetime, they choose a different approach. Try not to plaster generalities on everyone will you?

Yeah. Back when people didn't know about all the shit we did, they liked us a lot more. And even when people hated us because all the shit we did was too big to hide from people who don't spend all their free time watching Sit-com's and game shows, the media was still good enough to keep us from finding out that they hated us.

Now there's so much media that everyone knows to hate us, and we can't help but find out about it.

The media sucks.

Hate to break it to you, but most people don't read blogs or watch whatever silly videos you are talking about. And the majority of Australia's news services are actually pretty decent bias-wise. There is some left and a bit more right, but in general does not deliberately create anti-American feelings.
