So... Stephen Colbert Day in Oshawa...

I must have had my head in the sand...

For those who don't know, I live in the funk-tasticular City of Oshawa, Ontario. I generally frequent a pub across the street from the new General Motors Centre where the Oshawa Generals (OHL team) now play. This weekend was no different.

So there I was, on my sixth or seventh pint of green beer, (St. Patrick's Day after all), and I see all these bloody posters on the wall about Stephen Colbert Day in Oshawa. I couldn't wrap my head around why Oshawa, a Canadian City, was celebrating a day after Stephen Colbert. A couple of other friends, in a drunken stupor, also puzzled over it. (Too drunk to actually read the poster... damn fine print...)

Apparently the Mayor of our city lost a bet with Stephen Colbert, and has to have the City of Oshawa commemorate a day in his name... on the Mayor's birthday no less. So, Oshawa being the city that revels in its crappiness, decides to make a big event out of it, and host a get together at the new arena downtown... complete with Don Cherry and mediocre radio personalities.

I'm dreading the soundbites on the Stephen Colbert Show.

Nevertheless, the whole thing costs about 5 bucks, and it would take me about 5 minutes to walk there. I'd even consider going, except... it's kinda crappy all around. I'd just walk across the street to the pub afterwards, but it's Tuesday.

Oh, here's the itinerary;

- Entertainment featuring Canada’s favourite hockey commentator, Don Cherry, comedian Darrin Rows and music by Two For The Show
- Opening Ceremonies with local station, Rogers Television, Carolyn Ellis & Jerry Archer of KX96FM’s Morning Show, and featuring special guest emcee Tom Hayes, anchor and reporter for CTV News Toronto
- Hockey challenge - Oshawa Generals vs Saginaw Spirit - featuring team mascots Shooter and Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle
- Free cake for the first 4,000 guests
- Free Dr Pepper - Mr. Colbert’s favourite soft drink - for all guests
Grand Opening of Prospects Bar & Grill (the General Motors Centre’s two-storey restaurant that overlooks game and event action)

Yay, cake. And Dr. Pepper. Hell, it's Oshawa, they couldn't roll out the crack or what?

I'm wary. What does NSG think?

...why aren't you going?! GO! GO! This is an event you can't miss! And go as early as possible. Free cake is always good.

Hmm... I'm sensing a resounding landslide... I'll have to check on the poll results in the morning...

I'm gonna have to round up the Mikesburg posse it seems...

Holy Landslide!

Either people really want me to go to this thing, or they enjoy calling me a cheap bastard.

Then again, NSG could be full of cake-lovers...

Five bucks != Free. Does nobody even read this stuff?

(Of course it's only 5 bucks Canadian, so that's ... what, 30 cents US?)

 I can't believe that poll.

Don't go! It's gonna be all kinds of embarrassing and it'll make you squirm in your seat and hoping a hole would open in the ground and swallow you up. And if it wasn't bad enough to have to sit through it, as an extra bonus you get the risk of accidentally being in some shots that end up being mocked on the Colbert Report. So of course that means you can't go to the pub and get drunk instead either because you're too likely to wander over there afterwards and give them the worst soundbite ever, which you'll only remember about when you see yourself on national TV later.

Just stay home.

You mean I can get on network television by making an ass of myself at the pub? Sweet!

On second thought... maybe you're right. I'm thinking the vast majority of people were lulled in by the so-called 'free cake'. If there was an actual hockey game, it would be totally worth it. Instead, there's some sort of mascot competition...

Well, if I do go, and I end up on the Colbert Report, I'll be sure to let Generalites know which of Colbert's victims is Mikesburg.

You have to go. This is the only chance you'll ever hav tp publicly celebrate Stephen Colbert Day - that's not something to be missed.

That the same reasoning that ended up with me paying real money to watch Uwe Boll beat up some film critics.

Hmm. It does have 'once in a lifetime' element to it, doesn't it? One could say the same thing about decapitation though. Still, I haven't had a chance to see the arena from the inside yet, so I'm going to float the idea to my co-conspirators and see what they think.

Don't go. You'll just wind up being the poor SOB that Colbert mocks on his show the next day. Go to the pub and drink.

GO DAMMIT! Coincidentally, this is also the 4th anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq war. Colbert Day and the Oshawa mayor's birthday both celebrate on the same day as the war! So strange...
