Pieter Willem Botha, Die Groot Krokodil. Though I disagree with some of his views, and I agree with others....he led the best modern nation Africa has ever seen.

Chaka Zulu, AKA Chaka the Great, founder of the Zulu Nation.

Had some definite problems, but then "Great" does not equate to "Good".

Curious choice. Though if I'm ever in Egypt, that abandoned city of his is on my 'must visit' list.

How about King Ezana of Axum? Or even Prester John, if you believe a word of that little story...

Ramesses II.does geography alone determine "african" ?
well, that one was of mixed semitic and indo-european descent. does that count as typically "african" ?
if only geography counts, then i'll vote for George V of the United Kingdom.

He did directly rule over Egypt, which, last time I checked, qualifies as African.

In any case, what is gentically "African"?

Interesting choice. I almost added him to the poll, but figured he was more of a Middle Eastern leader than an African one.

Seretse Khama was integral in establishing the economic and democratic traditions that have permitted Botswana to flourish since independence. He led not as a king or warlord, and the transfer of power following his death was relatively peaceful. He presided over rapid economic growth, and increasing stability.

He got my vote.

Egypt is part of Africa, granted more middle eastern than what a lot associate with Africa, but still.
