Can you please point out at what point anyone has actually received cash reperations? I am unaware of most situations in which this occured. That being said, institutions have apologized, and in that vein:

THe Catholic church has already apologized for its persecution of protestants and jews. Germany has already apologized for its past wars and aggressions. Rome as a political entity no longer exists, Italy is not rome. France I'm not familiar enough with to comment.

So you got your apologies from 2 of the 4, 1 of them doesn't exist anymore, and I'd argue that modern france bears no political identity to Gaul.

So...what's your problem exactly?

--I was raised a Protestant. My ancestors were persecuted by Catholics. Pay up, Roman Catholic Church.

--I am joining the Catholic Church. Catholics were persecuted in America during the 1920s. I demand reparations from every church that ever had a single member that harmed a Catholic.

--I am part Irish and, therefore, my ancestors were assualted by the British and denied rights by the American government. Both of them owe me.

--I am also part English, and my ancestors' homeland was bombed by the Nazis. The Germans owe me.

--I am also part German, and my ancestors' homeland was displaced and occupied for 40+ years. Therefore, the governments of the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union owe me. Britan and France owe me double for the Versailles Treaty.

--I am also part Cherokee, and the whole Trail of Tears means that the American government owes me.

--My American ancestors were also put through the Bataan Death March. Pay up, Japan.

--And while we're at it, my grandpa was shot at by the North Koreans. Kim Jong Il can just write me a personal check.

--My other grandpa was killed by alcohol and tobacco. The liquor and tobacco industries definitely owe me.

--Also, that jerk who stole my identity when I was 19 still owes me. I can pay him, though, in the form of groin kicks.

The whole idea of asking for an apology for a historical occurance is a bit dubious, because, despite the moral implication of the occurances at the time, if they didn't happen, then you wouldn't be here today. Now, regardless of how you may feel about slavery or imperialism, surely you value your own existance more?

For example, I'm a little bit Indian. If my nation hadn't've schmoozed its way into the Indian continent and brought it under colonial control, my great great grandparents wouldn't have met and I wouldn't have been born.

People constantly get reparations mixed up with restitution too. As in, restitution for forced sterilisations for the mentally disabled (Alberta), restitution for those forced into Japanese internment camps (BC) or the racist Chinese head tax. In all of those cases, those that are still alive collect...and those that are not, do not, nor do their descendants get a cent.

You could also probobly get some cash out of France and Austria for the Protestant thing, not to mention the Lutheran church since Luther didnt support the early Protestant rebellions.

For the last eight years, I've faced major crap in my neighborhood. They owe me.

I would also like to sue both the elementary and middle school in my town because of the bullying. Now those wimpy little "Bulldogs" won't have their nice little spiked collars.

I would also like to sue the State of Virginia for being so crappy that its people feel the uncontrollable urge to move to North Carolina, whine that nothing's there, then urbanize it out the wazoo.

I would also like to sue the State of North Carolina for the first two reasons, plus not closing its borders to Virginia within the past five years (I moved here from Virginia eight years ago, at least 3 years before the Great Virginian Rush), and for those ghastly abstinence classes I had to endure in middle school.

I would also like to sue God for being an overall arse. I don't care if it doesn't exist. I need some cash.

Do you live in America? If you do, American Protestants sure never apologized for persecuting American Catholics. And in the South, they still do tend to harass and belittle them. 25% of the US is Catholic, yet there has only been one Catholic president. Hmm.
