did that really require two posts?

a)people buy nice things without it having to be about their genital size and/or breast size. I want the mustang because it is a great car to drive
b)all purchases or desires to purchase are materialistic. Deal with it.

I really miss my Chevy Sprint, the one I got was in poor condition, but if I could get one new (I can't btw, I had like a 1985 and they don't' make them anymore.) I would like to have another, it was small and efficient, and versatile and cute-ish, and it got like 45mpg.

a professor at our school has a really cool selfmade car. something between a go-car, an electrical car and a bike you have to lie on. it would be cool to have one of those.
if it has to be a real car i think i'd choose an old VW van. a friend of mine has an old VW beetle from the 50's wich is kind of cool. or a mobile-home those things are cool too, imagine where i could go.
i should learn how to drive first though.

In fact, I'll take 1 classic VW bug convertible (color to be determined) and 1 VW New Beetle convertible (color eggshell), thank you very much.

Maybe one of these (http://www.dormobile.org.uk/Images/landrover.jpg).

And of course some random, beautiful, sleek but curvy antique sportscar, color either eggshell or that really dark green with the slight golden hue.

Color is important. *nods* :p

I'm wanting to buy a Uaz 469 Soviet Jeep. Quite nice piece of militaria that's just a bit smaller than a British Land Rover.

http://www.russiantruck.co.uk/images/trucks/Uaz/Uazjeep07.jpg

It's got 19-21 Miles per Gallon with a V55 type engine (V12 580BHP 38,000 cc), and can be converted to run on more fuel efficient compressed gaseous petrol.

But my perfect ride would have to be this Gvozdika 2S1:

It's fun, even when it's shady. You lose all sense of urgency driving a car with a 0-60 mph time of 'maybe.'
do you have to do a lot of maintainance and stuff?
You bet. It's a mechanically simply 40 year old van, and that's the youngest a split window can be! But just take the book (VW Maintance of the Complete Idiot) and there isn't anywhere really you can't go, as long as you're not in a hurry.

I joke that driving a vintage car means that you never travel farther than you're willing to be towed back, but when it was my primary vehicle (I now have an additional '85 Vanagon for work and long hauls) I took it all over Northern California and always managed to get it back, though sometimes that was a hassle.

If you keep on it, it's not that bad. If you let the problems pile up (like I do more than I'd like) it can get pretty bad and you start to think you have a lemon. But they're actually troopers, you just have to remember how old that trooper is.

Mine was kind of cheap, @$1700. It had some hidden issues that I didn't care about because it was a car with a table in it, so I was sold. They can get expensive depending on condition and type. The most expensive usually is the 21-window buses, Westfalias (mine!) are on the pricy side as well.

It gets about 30 mpg if you go easy, and you really don't have a choice, so it's gravy. I get anywhere between 25-30, depending on maintence and where I go.

It won't pass smog, becuase the last year I had to pass smog, it didn't. But I don't have to anymore, so there is that.

It's easy to convert them to run on propane, which is still a fossil fuel, but it burns cleaner, so if that bothers you (it does me, and I'm converting her when I get the money together) then you can do that. It has the side effect of really cleaning out the engine, but it also runs hotter, which is already a problem for that engine.

Other than that, if you keep up on things it doesn't really leak oil, but it can. It's not as bad as its contemporaries, but I wouldn't compare its emmissions to a modern car.

Whenever I'm asked this question I give the same response as I have for the past 15 years... maybe longer... This is my dream car, even though I know in reality it would never even fit together properly, let alone drive. Oh, but how fun it is to think of... (btw, for those who don't know, I'm a late-20s mother)

I want a Volkswagon beetle, not the superbugs, but one of the old-school original ones... but with a newer earth-friendly hybrid engine in it, that'd be sweet, would like to keep it a manual tranny for the revving abilities though... Gotta be a convertible, too. Painted a deep, royal purple with green flames coming from the hood along the sides of the doors.

And I want monster truck tires on it. Like, the big ones. Yeah, I know the frame wouldn't handle it, but still. I want a freaking ladder to get into the front seat from underneath so I can go rolling over those punk ass SUVs who think they're so bad.

Wind (and branches too, probably) in my hair, no exhaust fumes from other cars, clear roads wherever I turn up. Aaaaahhhh that's the stuff. Muahahaha.

As for me, I echo the Tesla votes (maybe a slightly more practical version, if and when one comes out).

Well, without having driven any of the really nice ones...probably a 911 GT3 or a Lamborghini Gallardo SE.

It's gotta be one of the still somewhat sensible ones, because I'd imagine it would be a major pain having to use a GT3 RS or Gallardo Superleggera as an everyday car.

I've driven cars of a similar-ish speed on a track (well, it was only similar because none of the straights would be long enough for the Tuscan to reach its top speed, but the car I was in had similar acceleration and better cornering). It takes a few laps to get used to it, but once you do it's not so bad.

I was behind a TVR the other day. We were going along slowly in traffic, and then came to a dual carriageway. The guy finally had a chance to hit the gas, and I loved the noise it made... for about 3 seconds, before some pratt in an old Mondeo pulled out in front of him at about 17mph. :p

I've driven cars of a similar-ish speed on a track (well, it was only similar because none of the straights would be long enough for the Tuscan to reach its top speed, but the car I was in had similar acceleration and better cornering). It takes a few laps to get used to it, but once you do it's not so bad.

The H3 had one of those inadvertant commentary ads...it starts with a giant lizard smashing through a city that runs into a giant robot that's smashing through the city and they fall in love and give birth to an H3. The H3 is the child of two city destroying monsters...

The Cayman is the best handling Porsche ever and in many ways might be the most 'proper' Porsche in a long time as it's pure handling and grit with out a care in the world about your groceries or practicalities.

But the Exige is all kinds of nice.

Something custom made. I'm thinking an amphibious car that's shaped like a giant yellow duck (Naturally with the horn sounding like a quack). Ideally seaworthy so I could take trips to France and fitted with deck on top and maybe a mouse terrarium as well. That would rule so much.

Otherwise, I don't really have a dream car, other than something that's of a simplistic but utterly brilliant design. So far, air-cooled VWs, especially my '64 Beetle, fit that description quite nicely, along with the air-cooled Porsches of old.

an ultra-light-rail, solar battery, flywheel, or other non-combustion powered guideway based public transit system, in a world without the use of combustion to propell transportation or putting trying to impress anyone ahead of the kind of world we all have to live in.

until that day comes, well i still prefer public transit to having to maintain my own pain in the ass with four wheels on the bottom, but two wheels, either battery electric or at least extremely good on gas, as two wheels tend to be an order of magnitude more then four anyway, might be ok.

if i was living up in the boonies where i would really need it, then some kind of pickup or van, but still, if possible electric or other non-combustion tecnology.

a grav sled might be nice if we had them too. or a lananran singleship.
even a solar/battery masterbot/lawn tractor.

a friendly flying pig or dragon friend might be a nice way to go too.

A heavily modified Fiat 500 (that is, one seat only and a 2000 cubic centimetres turbocharged engine).

Or

A heavily modified Alfa Romeo 156: hybrid - turbodiesel engine, electrical transmission to 4 independent asynchronous motors, one per semiaxle, and an electronic differential (or traction control). Oh, and a HUD.

Or

A Centauro, in the variant with the Rheinmetall 120L44.

I am actually well aware of the fact. But I still want a 'Firebird' not a 'Trans-Am'.
a) because trans am sounds deeply naff and more suited to a train or something, not a bright red sports car
b) more importantly, when I was a kid and i had a scalextrix rip off with two Firebirds/ Trans Ams on it it called them Firebirds and since that's from where my desire to possess one ultimately rests I'm sticking with that name.

It is, mostly about the Quattros in Trans Am racing, and about how dominant the car was in everything (including Group B) that it was banned or killed the series.
