Sydney Harbour Bridge

75 years ago today the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia was opened to the public after about 30 years of construction, most through the height of the depression. I just watched a program regarding the creation of the bridge and in particular the volatile political situation that arose in the lead up to it's opening. I was therefore inspired to make this thread for NSG Australians who maybe interested, I believe there is also a SBS series called 'Constructing Australia' that just did an episode on the bridge.

My wife and I vacationed in Sydney and watched people climbing that bridge. I asked about it but you can't take cameras (I guess they're afraid you will drop them on the cars below) so we didn't do the climb. I also asked "What if people fall while climbing?" The answer - "Well, if you ignore the safety precautions and manage to fall, the average IQ on the island goes up, yeah?"

What an enlightened philosophy! I approve. :)

I have done the climb, a long time ago now, as it's not my state, but I remember it was incredibly scary as I am acrophobic, second only to going on the walkway of the 3 sisters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Sisters_(Australia)).

Meh.
I think the fact that 500,000 people had nothing better to do yesterday than to walk across the bridge says a lot about the people in this city.
