SW ep 5: The Empire strikes back

the imperial march rawks, it's my unofficial anthem!

Whilst the imperial march does rock, I think the best theme from the SW movies was either the Battle of Heroes in Ep 3, or the Duel of the Fates..

Wait, I also really like in ESB where Han is flying through the Asteroid Field, that music is kick butt too.

there are so many variations on the imperial march (and some are very subtle) its really good.

But SW series has many more, I agree.

amongst others:
Binary sunset (both in the original SW and in ROTS at the end)
Light of the force/victory celebration (ROTJ)
Anti-Social Darwinism

I'm a huntress on an African safari....it's a dangerous sort of sport and yet it's fun.....every night I sally forth to seek my quarry and I realize that I forgot my gun  I am lost in the forest all alone and unarmed when I meet a lioness in her lair, then I'm glad to be back in my own little corner.....all alone in my own, little chair.

So you're singing it, too? :p

Star Wars might have had a sucky story, but it had some damned good music, as did Jurassic Park and every other movie John Williams did the score to.

Star Trek: First Contact and Insurrection are also among my favorites for Jerry Goldsmith's wonderful work.

But by far my true favorite is the Back to the Future movie scores. Alan Silvestri is better than anyone.

The Graduate

The use of contemporary music was actually groundbreaking in 1967. The music was pretty much exclusively by my favorite musical duo, Simon and Garfunkel.

The movie actually introduced me to their great music and has made me a huge fan of theirs. That movie can be credited with giving us the great song "Mrs. Robinson." THose who have seen the movie know what the song is really about and laugh when they hear it played during the "American Pie" films during scenes with Stifler's Mom.

Chicago - Jazz! And a lawyer controlling the press like puppets! What's not fun about that?

Rent - tho I liked the Broadway sdtk better. Rosario Dawson just isn't as convincing a Mimi as... What'sherface was.

If you want what I believe to be one of the most evocative soundtracks I've ever heard, you're going to have to listen to the soundtrack to Schindler's List. John Williams teamed up with Itzhak Perlman gives a rich emotional overtone to the film.

Gotta love SW soundtracks especially Anakin's Dark Deeds, fell in love with it went it fitted perfectly with Kashykk in BF2- really doing it there.

As for 300 only seen the trailer but love that it's got Just like you imagined by the NIN- never heard it elsewhere except when I'd downloaded it like 5 months ago and was gonna use it for my A-level short. I actually have a different view of the flick now and wanna check it out.

I think the movies stick becuase of the soundtrack..but then on the other hand, maybe it's really Harry Potter I like and John Williams' soundtrack is part of that..I mean would I sit around and listen to Harry Potter soundtracks without watching the movies?
hmmmm..
I DO have a special place in my heart for The Sound of Music and that was BEFORE Gwen went and did her lousy tribute to it with "Wind it Up". Yes, I like the movie but you can catch me on any given day singing the "yodelling song" or "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" or even better "Do Re Me"

Once Upon a Time in the West - In a reversal of the usual sequence of movie scoring, Ennio Morricone wrote the score first, and Sergio Leone filmed scenes to go with the score. It's "Horse Opera" at its most literal.

I'm also quite fond of the score of The Two Towers - the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy had fantastic music, but the middle part had the best, in my opinion.

Since most of my CD collection is film sound tracks, this should be fun...

In terms of actual OSTs, my top six at the moment have to be:

Children of Dune (Brian Tyler): Regardless of your opinion of the series, the sheer volume of music and the incorporation of an entire fictional language freely throughout the soundtrack, along with some very lively Middle Eastern melodies to really drive the mood of the movie, make this one a seriously great soundtrack.

300 (Tyler Bates): A great blend of traditional Mediterranean and Persian melodies with orchestration that, quite honestly, makes you want to get up and hit something... hard.

Passion of the Christ (John Debney): Now before you go postal on me for this one, hear me out. Yeah, the movie itself amounts to little more than Mel Gibson's wet dream come true, but the score is quite moving and incorporates nicely the various languages and cultures portrayed in the film without coming across as simply glued in.

Hellboy (Marco Beltrami): Again, this may come as a shock, but the sheer "quirkiness" of the score to this movie, plus its use of the haunting theme that makes up the totality of the song "Father's Funeral" makes it quite enjoyable.

Edward Scissorhands (Danny Elfman): I really can't explain this one, except to say that I tear up every time I hear it...

Superman Returns (John Ottman): The big surprise here was not that it was good, but rather that Ottman was able to take John Williams' amazing score from the original movies and expand on it enough to make it sound like something that, in my humble opinion, could have easily been written by Williams himself.

In terms of general soundtracks, my list is, in no particular order:

Kill Bill, Volumes 1 & 2
Sin City
The Matrix
Reservoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction (noticing a trend yet...?)
